I don't remember it being a Prison before 9/11, it was just an American Naval Base and had been since before Castro. In the mid nineties it was used to keep and process Cuban Migrants that wanted to come to the US.

I worked in Guantanamo for 9 months and also worked at a state pen in US for 4.5 years. I can tell you that inmates and guards in Guantanamo are so much more laid back and relaxed comparing to a state pen. It’s was so chilled i volunteered to deploy there again

I was as shocked and saddened as any sentient human being by this kind of annihilation, although it doesn't even remotely come close to the things Russia is doing to Ukraine or China is doing to the Uighurs or in Tibet. I think in retrospect it would have been best to take them out of the fight in a way that would not have made them martyrs with the local government. In the end, they are just using the faith as a cover for their own selfish motives.
