Gum is an attractive girl, and she knows that. IMHO the "heartbreaker" side is that she just don't care for romantic relationships. She loves to live free, to hang with the gang, and spray the walls of Tokyo-to. Since she doesn't want attachments, and considering there is a big culture around confessions in Japan, would say she rejected plenty of guys (and considering the GG gang's average age, most are high schoolers, where many of those confessions happen). So the moniker of "heartbreaker".

The manual said she'd leave as soon as she wins a guy's heart. That could be intentional or not. I'm not seeing anything in these descriptions of Gum that says she's actually doing anything. She's hot, she's sexy.... that's about it. She doesn't want to commit to a relationship. That's all those descriptions say. Gum has sex appeal, but she isn't a slut. She's that girl that all guys want to be with, but she tells them no. GG's come first for her. She MIGHT date a GG, but even then she might not because that could be detrimental to the group if something bad were to happen. I don't think she'd risk it.

Gum is one of my favorite Sega characters, and one of my favorite characters as a whole, and what I find interesting about her is how vague the creators purposely kept her character - limited and suggested personality. It's really up to the audience to make up her character, but her role in JSRF really fleshes her out a lot more than the previous game (although, personally, I am not a fan of her outfit in this game). I also like how her new lines in the Sega All-Stars games suggest her character having a tough demeanor and "Type-A Personality," which really fits well with her being a leader - Gum has to be a rolemodel for her group. I also like how Sega Heroes implies her character further as well, which is demonstrated through her moves, and her lose/win animations.

Before I say anything I want to announce that I don’t condone the sexualization of minor characters (but not to the degree that some people take it) I think sexuality can be used as interesting development of a characters personality even if it’s a late minor (16-17) as long as it’s not made pedophilic. Sexuality is a part of everyone’s journey and exploring in character’s discovery or identity humanizes them and can be beneficial to the character, as long as it’s written properly. How this correlates to Gum I want to add a bit of my perspective/headcannon. I consider Gum to be 17 almost 18 (as well as Beat and Tab) and her identity is primarily her having confidence and love for herself without any shame. And I’m loving all aspects of herself she takes shape in her sexuality as she feels it’s a sense of pride, power, and femininity. Especially, I feel, coming from Japan where sexuality is usually shamed and shunned (I could be wrong but that’s what I know from my own research). Just like how graffiti and fashion can be used as a form of expression, sexuality can be too and I feel that ties well with the messaging of JSR & Future. Having the knowledge of how you enjoy yourself and your body in a culture where that is judged constantly by others, especially for women, shows a sense of pride and love for you natural feelings. Again as long as nothing is blown out of proportion or made inhumane I think it’s a wonderful message of love.

This is actually a pretty interesting angle to approach the topic. There are certainly multiple characters that use their sexuality as a strength that helps them feel more confident in themselves because maybe they just feel proud of how they look or it just makes themselves feel more confident. I think if Jet Set Radio were to ever have more in depth fleshed out characterization, maybe she would have it be more part of her character. It's hard for a topic like this not to be blown out of proportion in the realm of fiction. Even just seeing characters around the high school age in suggestive looking clothing or with a certain body type is like walking on eggshells from outside perspectives. Nothing wrong with feeling weird about it, and it's definitely understandable to. But there's also a way to correctly respond to those who aren't too bothered by it but also don't fetishzise it

Most characters do look older, but since there is no age for the Future variation, we can't exactly pinpoint how old everyone is. I've actually seen one piece of JSR/JSRF fanfiction I randomly found due to a combination of boredom and sick curiosity that plays into the whole "leaves broken hearts as she goes" to give Gum a half decent backstory and motivation. In very few words, she had one horrible experience with love caused by a combination of her being naive and inexperienced about this kind of stuff and the guy she was with being a huge asshole (nothing nsfw), and the way she reacted to it (smashed his car with a baseball bat and broke his leg) caused a chain reaction of stuff that led her to running away from home. The whole heartbreaking thing is her essentially getting back at guys who remind her of him and never actually slept around with anybody, and she even hung around the Love Shockers for a while before she witnessed them hurting and literally killing innocents due to their ideals. And in this fic this whole thing plays into her character with her not exactly being opposed to having a relationship (and she later does, but that's besides the point), but still thinking she isn't really cut out for that kind of stuff and valuing her friendships more. I think it gives her a little depth without sacrificing her original characterization too much, and that's always cool in my book. So, Gum is always at the forefront of any art for JSR and JSRF, and frankly, it is a little annoying. My favorite girl has always been Cube, with Ryth/Mew as a close second, and the fact that they get half the art combine than she does on her own, is a little annoying. On the other end of my thoughts, this was a good video. You made some good points, and I am glad you took a grown up view and saw both sides of the arguments. The JSR community could take a few pointers from you.

For my case, I just see the characters for as they are in the series they came from, even if I carry certain thoughts on them regarding their appearance. Hell, there's some Ive seen lewds of that, funnily enough, lead me into playing some those series and even had me be more fond of said characters in other aspects. Like with Mai Shiranui for instance, given how before I got into KOF, Ive seen some stuff regarding her, and years later, I enjoy playing as her along with her abilities in the games she's in. And vice versa when its a character I enjoyed within the game but have seen raunchy stuff of them, and yet that didnt overshadow my overall thoughts about them, like with Mitsuru given her outfit in Persona 4 Arena Ultimax or Ann in general, since I enjoy both their characters regardless of it all. For Gum's case, given how I played her in JSR recently, its no different. Its quite a balance that I have when it comes to this, for in spite of my horny thoughts, I still acknowledge and enjoy the characters I like.

I think being mad at nsfw is sorta pointless. There will always be porn, nothing to it, and if your popular, maybe even of you! But you got to understand, that those things being made, are literally just a part of the internet, no less about how everything has a tutorial, and everything has a fandom. I remember back in 2003 the anime inspired cartoon Teen Titans was immensely popular, and two of it's underage girl characters, Starfire & Raven are still popular to this day 20 years later in many things like fanfics & R34 art. My point is it's never going away. You can be creeped out and cry about it as much as you want, but it's never ever going away. People like who they like in fiction because it's not real, and hurts no one, regardless of how it's seen. And like @KamiKoroshi said a large majority of anime & manga characters are underage. For like 40+ years this type of thing has been going on, and only roughly 4-5 years have people been complaining about it since it became mainstream. The best solution is just to walk away, and avoid it. Confronting or talking about it doesn't do anything but create conflict & drama.

Most anime fans probably defend loli/the normalization of s3xualizing minors in anime seeing the sheer amount of anime and mangakas who partake in it too, and it’s sad to see so many people (even the creator of this video) actively defend it. That’s why most of the black community watches shonen/battle anime primarily and never interacts with the weebs-you’ve never seen RDCWorld interact with TheAnimeMan or Gigguk before, right? Because those guys defended loli and called Asuka from Evangelion (who’s 14) hot, something that would never fly in the black anime community. The harm principle is often something people bring up in order to soften the blow of this content-“if it isn’t hurting anyone, it’s fine!” Except it is. Our moral compass has completely blown apart over the last 40 years that anime and manga have been doing this, and the past 20-something of western art doing this. You know what, I will say, fair assessment for my use of showing more mature art depictions of Gum while talking about why some folks like that part of Gum's design leaning a lot on her looks. However, I will say deform is not the right word I would use. Everyone has their different interpretation on whether or not they wanna keep Gum close to how she looks officially or model her a little different for their taste. The main point I'm making is there is a crowd that loves how Gum leans a bit on the sexy side with her design and look, and they wanna depict that on top of the other things people like her for. I know the topic itself is a walking on egg shells type deal, it wasn't gonna be easy to talk about and argue about (especially in points of defending NSFW creators). I do see it a little differently. I think it's different if you've never actually played the game and you're not really a fan, drawing the character. But I think if you already are a big fan, I see it as just you drawing the character in your way and of course if they wanna change something from initial designs, they're free to. I'm not an artists, but some artists either don't mind or love to see their original characters being drawn by artists for things 18+. Of course there will be artists as well who don't like that and will say to not use their properties in that manner. And there's also cases where the artists/art director are fully aware of their characters looks and they lean into appeasing to that certain crowd with fan service by putting them in risqué outfits (like Ann in P5 or tons of Fire Emblem Characters). Not everyone is gonna like their character being drawn in NSFW matters, and that’s completely understand. However, there are artists who don't mind it at all or like that other artists draw their characters.

I ain't say nothing about me being right. NSFW artists are free to draw what they like, and all the characters are drawn as adults by those artists. I don't think it should lead to any of the extreme examples I mentioned in the video over drawings of fictional characters. And if you don't feel comfortable understandably so, you can filter out and avoid those spaces. However, wishing or bringing harm to others over it is not okay.
