On December 25th, 2014, the hacker group "Lizard Squad" orchestrated a large-scale DDoS attack that crippled Xbox Live and PlayStation Network.
Led by four young hackers - Vinnie Omari, Julius Kivimäki, Zachary Buchta, and Bradley Jan Willem van Rooy - Lizard Squad had been causing gaming disruptions for months. But their Christmas day sabotage took things to a shocking new level.
Using a network of malware-infected machines known as a "botnet", Lizard Squad overwhelmed Microsoft and Sony's servers with traffic, making online gaming impossible for over 160 million users.
Their goal? Maximum chaos. After taunting their targets through attention-grabbing tweets and interviews, Lizard Squad followed through on their Grinch-like promise to "ruin Christmas."
In a desperate move, entrepreneur Kim Dotcom tried negotiating with the hackers, offering $300K worth of lifetime subscriptions to his Mega service in exchange for stopping their attack. The deal worked - but for many, Christmas morning gaming was already destroyed.
In the aftermath, law enforcement descended on Lizard Squad. With members doxxing themselves through brazen interviews and online activity, arrests soon followed in the UK, Finland and the US.
