I love the scene with Jorge interrogating the girl at the relay. When the Elites attack, Jorge completely covers the girl. Exposing his back to the enemy in a selfless act to protect her. It shows several qualities of his character: his faith in his team to protect him, his tragically selfless nature, and his desire to protect the innocent. Besides John-117, Jorge may be one of the most selfless and genuinely heroic characters in the entire series. “Tell’em to make it count.”

I got into Halo after walking in on my Dad playing Halo 2. He plugged in another controller on his 360 and taught 6 year old me how to play. Eventually, we started playing Halo Reach and got until the Final Chapter when he had something come up with the Army. He died soon after, with 8 years or service. I couldn't even touch his controller until a year later when I decided to beat Reach for him. I had no idea we were 4 save points away from beating the game, and Reach hit me like a truck with the ending. Later this month marks half my life since he passed on, but Halo will forever be my way of remembering him, be it playing a new game in the series or completing my first Legendary run.

I think what hits really hard is just before they die; they are finally warming up to you. Jorge: You've spent an entire mission with him. He gives you his dog tags and even comforts you after watching a USNC carrier being blown up Kat: Consoles you after getting hit by the glassing and calls you a steely eye Spartan after doing the mission and because she blames herself for the original 6's death. Carter: Says that Cortana picking you was the right choice and making sure you got there safe. Emile: Jokes about racing you to the pillar of autumn and when the ship comes tells you to get off this hell hole

The idea with Katts death is mostly to show that not everyone gets a hero’s ending in war. In an everyday action shooter there would be massive establishing shots, showing the sniper preparing, some flashy angles, maybe some slow motion. When in reality all that really happens is there’s a bang and you die, depending on the weapon, not even always in that order.

Something I don't know if anyone has mentioned before: Other than Jun, who doesn't die, and Emile, who remains faceless the entire game, every member of noble team takes their helmet off shortly or imminently before they die. Jorge takes it off to speak to 6 before sacrificing himself, Kat takes it off (puts it back on before she dies), Carter, before crashing into the scarab, and finally 6, before their heroic last stand. I think this is because they want to show that these people, this team, they're not just faceless, merciless super-soldiers. They're "real" people. Taking the helmet off is kind of a way to humanise the characters instead of them being faceless things that are more difficult to connect to on an emotional level.
@THE_CUT3 жыл бұрын

And it also makes sense for Emil to not take his helmet off because, as far as he is concerned, that grinning skull helmet IS his face. @Aristocles222 жыл бұрын

in a way, by make them take off their helmets in those critical moments increase whatever feelings you have, and also show the emotions they have by the time, a mix of them all subltle but present, you can see them feeling fear, anger, sense of duty and even gratitude, taking off the helmet is just that boost that makes you see their death as meaningfull, not just some random Marine you send to their deaths with a Plasma pistol, but as human being, real lost to the cause
@abigbear86173 жыл бұрын
A great part of reach’s cinematography is that most of the shots look like they could’ve been stripped from internal cameras from helmets or the cameras in certain other objects. It makes it seem like oni scavenged the footage to learn reaches final hours which can also be seen with each title card giving the time on reach truly making you feel both the main character and an outsider not knowing the emotions felt by the main character despite looking through your own visor.

The detail in Reach is insane, but my personal favorite example is when the Zealots attack in the satellite station at 6:30. While dragging the marine and the girl through the door, you can see the marine putting up a fight, grabbing onto the door, and managing to pull his head and torso out from behind it before being yanked back. In the end of the level, you can find the marine's corpse. Also, supposedly the Zealot that attacks Six and almost kills him before fleeing in that same cutscene is the same Zealot that kills Kat later in the game and is the Zealot we see with an energy dagger in Six's final moments.

My favorite part of this game is the cinematography, because I often overanalyse things to find meaning and cool details for myself. There are 2 details in one cutscene, Winter contingency, the scene with the elite attack. Before the attack happens, after George is done comforting the girl, the next shot is one with Six and Emile, in the front and Kat and Carter in the back. In this shot, Emile and six are under red lights, and Carter and Kat are under white lights. This split between them has always been interesting to me. I feel like it signifies the team charachteristics of Noble, Six and Emile are combat specialists, they fight in the dirt, they are the most brutal ( Six has a history of being hyperlethal and Emile is a breacher, he goes close quarters, he is the one closest to danger), Kat and Carter represent the head of Noble, one tech specialist and one leader, both forming some sort of duo that makes the desicions. George enters this scene in the red area, but after talking to Emile he moves to Carter and Kat, into the white light. This to me shows that he is the core/ Heart of the team in terms of keeping their bond tight. Jun isn't in the room, which to me foreshadows how he survives Reach. The death of George really shows what a core member he is. In this room, in the cave on LNoS, the team is together, talking to each other, bonded, but after he is gone, in New Alexandria, everyone is far apart. The heart of the team is gone and thus the space between the members is empty. Thats why Georges movement from Six and Emile to Carter and Kat in Winter Contingency is significant to me. He does not have a distinct identity in Noble team because he is the glue that binds the team together. Long comment lol, just rambling at this point.

@sasaki999pro3 жыл бұрын
The only time I really genuinely felt something for Chief was at the end of Halo 4, now I'm not talking about Cortana or really anything involving her and their relationship, I'm specifically referring to the moment Chief looks at the bomb, pauses, turns to stare up at Earth, sees the composer ravaging the planet and then he looks back at the nuke, that was the moment we genuinely saw John brace himself for DEATH. He knew he couldn't shoot his way out of that situation AND stop the composer, he was prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice for humanity's sake, and the game made sure you pulled the trigger. Halo 4 had ALOT of problems but this moment will stick with me forever.

Reach is special. There's no surprise, no nuance, you know the ending going into it. This isn't a story where the heroes win, this is a situation growing more and more hopeless by the moment. It's a tragedy in motion, a desperate fight for survival, a last stand. If the story didn't convey that, the music sure as hell does. It's somber. Haunting. Reach is the only game in the series that depicts a real glance at the Human-Covenant war. It's not a space opera, like the other entries, it's Blackhawk Down. It's Saving Private Ryan. It's a war story, and people die in wars.

One of my favorite details is how on Lone Wolf, you can find a bunch of dead Spartans. It really shows how dangerous the Covenant are, since they glassed Reach despite so many Spartans fighting back, and how awesome Chief is (and arguably 6) for beating them repeatedly while alone.

I feel like Reach conquered something a lot of modern games completely fail to do. Reach makes you feel like you’re part of something bigger. Seeing battles raging around you and not being the center of attention really makes you feel like a simple disposable soldier rather than a godlike superhuman. Seeing the battle rage outside of your zone also opens your eyes to the world around you. You’re not the only one fighting. The only other game I’ve seen master this is Battlefield 1. Seeing artillery fly deep into enemy territory, watching forests burn outside the battlefield, hearing the screams and gunfire of distant fights, seeing miles upon miles of devastation outside of the battle, it really makes you feel like you’re really part of something bigger.

I remember playing the final mission at my moms house, and when Carter sacrificed himself, my deeply religious step dad asked "Did that guy just commit Suicide?!" (Commonly seen as an instant ticket to Hell in many Christian denominations) Honestly, that contrast really helped solidify to me the narrative and the difference between suicide and sacrifice of oneself for a great purpose. I also replayed this game 10 years later when i was unemployed during the lockdown days of the Pandemic, and rediscovered it to such a degree that I'm fortunate enough to have two distinct sets of memories I associate with different parts of it. Honestly, many aspects only hit me when I was 26 versus 16, and had a chance to mature and understand the significance of everything going on from a human standpoint, and that actually leads into another aspect: none of these characters had the chance to live their lives, they were child soldiers who grew up in battle. They didnt just die for humanity, they gave literally their entire lives for humanity.

Halo reach was so impactful to me at the time, since i felt the struggle of loss with the fellow marines. In other halo games you are the badass, death is almost nothing your enemies fear you but in reach your squad gets picked off one by one much like the other soldiers who surely lost someone in the war. This point for me was exemplified not in the lost of the team but during the long night of solace. UNSC Frigate Savanah, this ship gave everything it had to support what could've easily been a suicide mission and in the final moments seeing that ship being torn apart by blaster fire, my face flooded with tears it gave all it could and never had a chance to flee the explosion shook me to my core and i was mad at my character at the covenant i replayed that mission 100 times over and over rushing to the room to kill the elites in hope that maybe i was too slow, maybe i could save Savanah but much like Reach it too was destined to meet its end.

That's the reason why this is my favorite story in halo. I generally like stories that you are not the main protagonist or take place before the hero gets introduced. You know the story will be bleak and end in the death of those characters but they are the catalyst for the hero. What makes them compelling is their lack of power unlike the hero who is either naturally gifted or given a special gift. They are more relatable in the sense they aren't special but what stands out from their character is their courage that anyone of us could have

"Halo Reach makes you care" I always had Reach as my favorite Halo game, and I never knew how to explain why. With this phrase, not only I recognize how I feel about this game, but I know exactly wich video I'm gonna tell people to watch when I recommend it. My favorite part of the game, by far, is how we are clearly not a protagonist nor a hero. We're just soldiers - legendary soldiers, maybe - but that's all. The whole game, no matter how good you are in the game, no matter how hard you try, the more you go on into the story, the only feeling you constantly have is that you're losing. You're losing the planet, you're losing your teammates, you don't any glory or heroism, you're only surviving to finish your mission, while everything around you is getting lost... and that's the most outstanding feeling in Reach among other games, and I LOVE it

Okay some how this wasn’t mentioned but the multiplayer customization being your campaign player really did a lot to make the story that much more impactful to me, each piece of armor, the lore associated with it, the decisions I made as a player, six being a canvas for my own head canon and backstory, culminated and a truly personal experience. And that’s says a lot, I was one of the die hard halo fans that was a bit upset about the retcon at first, but experiencing the story, seeing MY Spartan in the cut scenes, really made reach one of my all time favorite halo games. I’m making this after infinites MP came out and the huge community backlash to the progression and customization. It’s weird hearing people counter the backlash by saying customization was never important in halo when I got so attached to my noble six because of it. And with how they want a lore focused MP in infinite that’s just exacerbated the need for a robust customization and progression system.

It took me till right now, to realize that open frequency channel that the colonel was talking to noble team on, is the reason why kat got sniped. She had just acknowledged that secure comms were no longer a thing, and when carter asked if the covenant could trace their signal back to them since they were using an open frequency line, her response was “I could.” Signifying that anyone at/past her level in technological prowess, could find their location. This is even further Accentuated when she says “make it quick” because as the teams tech expert, she knew the risk of taking that call, but given the dire and uncertain complex circumstances that had befell noble team the last few days prior, she was too fed up on other things to realize the risk. Either that or she just didn’t care. Which now makes it ironic that the aliens with super technology caught up to, and killed one of them within 5-10 minutes of that broadcast.

Emile's death always struck me for how much of his character is revealed in just a few seconds with a couple lines of dialogue. We know from pretty early in the game that - in a way that's completely unlike his fellow Spartans - he loves to fight the Covenant. But his final moments show us so much of who he is. Like most of Nobile Team, Emile knows that this is it. But even with this knowledge, he's ready to die if it means completing his last mission. I personally think he always was ready for death, and when it finally came he embraced it in his own way. But he wasn't going to go without taking a couple more with him. From the voice acting, to the absolute flawlessness of this scene, Emile showed the player who he really was in one of the most brief but striking ways.
@kermitthefrog1176 Жыл бұрын
Some may say what he wants is to win the war, but what he wants is for the enemy to die. Since the covenant killed his family. He knew someday someplace he will meet his end and he was ready for it always. His sole purpose was to massacre as many of the enemy troops as he could. His body langauge tells he is ready to die any minute, even telling six to go aboard the autumn. His whole persona in reach tells us he has nothing to loose, and a man with nothing to loose is a dangerous one.

I always imagined how much Master Chief must hate himself for not being able to fight alongside his fellow Spartans in the Battle of Reach and how all these Spartans died to protect him and Cortana to ensure they’d survive to fight another day. The weight of their sacrifice must’ve been overbearing for him to burden.

Reach is a sad game that i love because of that, you feel powerful at the beginning, but as soon as you begin losing your team, you begin to feel less an less amazing, you run more from danger, you just feel powerless against them all, and in lone wolf, seeing all those dead Spartans around the map makes you just one more for the pile, it shows you just how powerful the covenant is and shows you that place will be your grave, where you take in your last breath, but at the same time thanks to all the effort you and the rest of the team make, you pretty much save the galaxy by delivering Cortana, who was key to fighting and winning the war, it's amazing and that's why I love Reach so much.

For everyone unhappy about cat being killed with one shot: Spartan 3s didn’t have overshields and their armor was worse overall compared to Spartan 2s. 3s were produced as cheaply as possible after the discovery of the covenant threat meant they needed as many Spartans as they could get.

All the Spartans in Noble team were given the advance armour with shields because their skill sets were above the rest. I think the EMP from initial glossing took out her shields and she put her helmet on too late so must have been down before recharging.
@soupgirl18713 жыл бұрын
Half correct, the radiation flare caused her shields to be faulty and they didn't activate, that's why it was so effortless
@BlightfulProductions3 жыл бұрын
@@soupgirl1871 That and if you look closely in the elevator cutscene at her neck, you can see the seal is breached, which might be another reason the shields didn't turn on, the armor wasn't put together correctly.

What I love about reach is it strays from the other halo games kinda like what ODST did but still have an impact on you still have the emotional poll that other halo games don’t and how the story is laid out still amazes me to this day

An amazing little detail I don't see many people talk about is when the gang is getting jumped by the zealots, right before they land, George moves his head slightly. It's nothing big but I really appreciate small details like that. Amazing video, keep it up

By the time reach came out there were already 3 halo games with masterchief so you know that even if he fakes his death he’s gonna come back. I didn’t feel like chief when I played reach, I felt like myself if I got to be a Spartan, that’s why I love halo reach.

Halo Reach is the Rogue One of the Halo Series. It's the prequel for the series that gives you backstory with well developed characters to explain how the mainline story came to be.

The ending of this game changed my perception of gaming forever. A game were me, the main character, ends up dying and losing everything he fought for, that messed me up man. But gave me a darn good lesson. Therefore I will forever respect this game the way I do.

Part of why I think we got so attached to Noble team is because we're able to impress on Six and put ourselves in his shoes way better than other silent protagonists. Six has enough of his own character to actually feel present, while still being enough of a blank slate to allow players to put themselves in his shoes. He has a history within the Halo universe, and he actually speaks instead of just standing and staring during cutscenes, but not so much so that it overrides the player's personality. It lets the player feel like an actual person in the game and not like some remote controlled drone. It's just really well done.

I remember when my dad and I beat reach together…. My big brother just got thrown out of the house for drug abuse, the family was falling apart… and he sat down with me to comfort me, he offered to play games with me knowing it would trigger his motion sickness…. He and I played that whole night…. We sat down and played again once a week for months, just playing together…. I remember when reach came out and my bestie and I took several days off school just to play it together…. We laughed, we fought, we cried, we stood side by side… we were Noble Team… And truthfully reach is my favorite, there was so many great moments I could highlight, moments with my best friend, moments with my dad, moments in the game, but none of those moments could say it all…. There’s only one thing I can truly say about reach… **Reach is unforgettable.**

I think an extra point to add with Jorge is he's the only Spartan 2 of the group, him dying first sets such a tone of vulnerability for the others. Like even if you arnt aware that the rest of noble team are the slightly weaker Spartans 3s - Jorge's physcal stature and relationship to Halsey subconsciously marks him in your mind as the closet parellel to master chief. So many cleverly though out details in this game😊😊👍👍.
