That's indeed a huge difference between American and German fire departments: keeping the crews of Engines and Aerials apart ... here the fire-fighters are cross-trained on every standard apparatus and then a selected special operations units. Depending on the department they might staff several different units at the same time. And every few weeks they switch their position on their "primariy" truck, thus e.g. they might be primarily on the Engine for some weeks and then on the Tower Ladder the next weeks

Operations vary widely from department to department (district to district). For example, Where I trained, there were crews of 3-4 that would be 24 hrs on and 48 off. 3 shifts. A, B, and C. Of course sometimes with variations. The equipment there was a engine, tender, and 2 squad units, a rehab unit, and finally our training engine. (The first squad was a SUV used for medical emergencies, the other was a light duty truck used for wildland calls like brush/grass fires). Every fire fighter was trained on each rig. So they can get on any rig and know what there doing. Now this was in a more rural station. More urban stations will have larger teams and more equipment and slightly different operations. But they are all again, trained on each rig. However, this knowledge is only from two districts. Which but up against each other.
@EnjoyFirefighting6 жыл бұрын
@@snowowl4019 I used to live in a city where the career / paid fire department had ONE station which covered all of the city area first due. The station crew was usually counting 21 fire-fighters which had to staff 55 different units (well, some few didn't had staffing like some service car or spare units, but most units had a crew) As far as In know they strictly keep the crews apart at the FDNY. Those which are on the Engine will be on it in 2 weeeks and months and years as well. Same with the Aerials or Rescues. At least that's what it is like for their standard apparatus, don't know how it's like with the special operations units
@ericl87436 жыл бұрын
In most places in the US, you're cross trained. Most firefighters are also volunteers, here. New York City is a huge city with special challenges and like lots of traffic. Most US cities don't have 100 story buildings
@hihfty6 жыл бұрын
@@EnjoyFirefighting just to add to what snow owl was saying. All FDNY members know how to operate operate both engine trucks and ladders. But Its up to the member to select which truck he would like to work on. Every one is trained the same way, its just that some people prefer ladder work versus engine company operations. and for speciality pieces like the hazmat and structural collapse team, that all depends on if you bid to a station that has the truck and if its in your district.

I drive tow trucks. Same concept, my flatbed probably a little less that 43 ft though. Make sure your rear tire is a little past whatever your trying to turn by. Simple concept now execute it in a fire truck and remember you have overhang past the last rear axle so the end of the truck also whips out a bit. i.e. a narrow street with cars parked on both sides the end of the truck can clip a cab and it'll take it straight out lol.

To elaborate on engine classification: Terms vary from region to region, having dealt with sales of emergency vehicles in my area this is what we used. The term fire engine is a generic term, used to describe any vehicle belonging to a fire department (Yes including ambulances). The technical terms are these: Rescue Pumper - An apparatus/appliance designed to carry and dispense water for fighting the fire while carrying equipment for performing rescue procedures. wildland/Field Pumper - A truck generally built on a commercial chassis designed to fight fires in wildland and farm areas. Generally, they have the capability of pumping water as they drive. Tanker/Tender - This truck is designed to carry large amounts of water and/or foam to sites that have limited water access. Rescue - This truck is specially designed to carry a wider array of tools than a rescue pumper for rescue procedures. Mass Casualty Unit - A specialized unit designed to carry tools and/or facilitate certain functions during mass casualty incidents such as terrorist attacks, multi-vehicle accidents, and natural disasters. Hazmat - A vehicle that is equipped with the tools and gear required for scenarios where hazardous items I.E: Radioactive waste, oil, biohazardous contaminants etc.. are at play. Mobile Command Unit - A vehicle designed for use in situations where onsite communications and command posts are necessary. This list doesn't include EMS vehicles as primarily I am wanting to talk about what most people think of when they think "fire engine". Another thing that is not as talked about but is crucial to departments purchasing new rolling stock is the chassis. Terms vary again so speaking from where I live there are two types: Custom and Commercial. Commercial refers to any chassis that is pre-made, these being your pickups, mid-duties and semis. They are cheaper to purchase but aren't fully specialized as a custom. Custom refers to the purpose-built chassis made especially for firefighting, while purpose-built and fitted for the task these tend to cost more than a commercial chassis thus are not as common among smaller departments. Now feel free to add on to this an discuss differences, I just felt like explaining a bit from my perspective on the matter of emergency vehicle classifications.

Crash course on what EVOC III and DPO is like huh? EVOC = emergency vehicle operation, there are three levels to it. 1 are police cars and other small vehicles, 2 is ambulance operation, 3 is fire truck operations. DPO is driver pump operator, which is required for anyone to drive the truck as they are the ones supplying the water. If you only have EVOC, technically you can't drive the truck while on duty until you have DPO.

In Californa, it's 300 feet for any emergency vehicle, including the tow truck.

Piece of cake. Long wheelbase is less reactive. You have to know where the "rear wheel tire" is at all times.

Love how she over simplifies it. There are three types of ladder trucks, one engine and then they're are rescue rigs. Plus other specialty rigs that are more like cars. It's also not that hard to drive a rig. Once you get the "feel" of the apparatus, it's as easy as driving your car.

maybe in the USA, but in other countries there are more than just three types of ladder trucks and more than just one type of Engines ^^

There’s two different Ladder trucks, Tower and basic Ladder.

Basic ladder, AKA Rear-mount, and you're forgetting about the Tillers
@904_Florida6 жыл бұрын
Oh yes, Can’t forget about the big ol’ Tillers.

luckily we have (almost) only Tower Ladders and equal Telescopic Lifts over here. The only Aerials without a bucket / platform are some old units which didn't made it through the tests any more. We also don't have any Tiller Ladders in Europe any more (we never had any of them in Germany)
