Today's video is all about HARDY, his new album 'A Rock,' and his place within country music. I think he's managed to freshen up the simultaneously reviled and beloved bro-country sound through excellent songwriting, and I was really surprised by my own reaction to this album.

I never realized other people had the same appreciation for clever word play in song lyrics until I started watching your videos and you really made me pay attention to Hardy for that reason. So often I find a song that really catches my attention and I'm not that surprised later to find out that Hardy wrote it. It's not really my sound but I enjoy listening to something that actually has some thought put into the words and their meanings.

But not even a week and a half after he released that song, I love a coworker and friend and that song has been on replay since, and it's really helped me cope with death, something I haven't really had exposure with in 10 years. I listen to a ton of country music...most of which you recommend or introduce me to and I have to say I LOVE this album. Maybe I like it for the lyrics, because I have a degree in writing, or just the clever wordplay...but I adore his tone in the music and that he isn't just wanting to get a random girl drunk or whatever. I also love the traditional storytelling like in Rock, and Given Heaven Some Hell...they take these tropes of life and make them so relatable, yet unique. Love the channel Grady!

I love the line “my trucks where my money goes” because I know of so many people who have a tiny trailer and an 80,000 dollar truck and I found it super funny. this guy can write a HOOK! i'm just going to go out on a limb that hardy will have a max martin or taylor swift type career within country music (from a songwriting standpoint). very few people have the sensibility for good hooks like he does. i completely agree that his voice is phenomenal. he has the rebel spirit attitude of morgan wallen but also toes the line between confidence and humility in the most natural way. i know that he went to school for songwriting (which is badass IMO) -- it really shows in the way he can carry a concept to the finish line. that's the biggest difference between him and other mainstream artists. he knows tricks of the trade like someone with years in the industry. no one could mash-up the country AF lyrics of boots with the over the top rock flair without a strong vision. someone creating that type of song isn't afraid to lean into uncharted territory which is SO cool for an artist in one of the most risk averse genres. i agree that sometimes the production can feel heavy handed, but IMO this album is so cohesive and well done. i wish him all the success in the world. can't wait to see him on tour next year (hopefully) i'd die if him and morgan did a big tour together

Wow it’s like you and I have the same brain haha. Well said! The album is bold in that he set out to create a particular vibe and knocked it out of the park for the most part. I’ll be honest, I haven’t really listened to the whole album. But, on purpose. When ONE BEER first came out, I wasn’t a fan. His look wasn’t something I understood (poor judgment on my part) and an album named HIXTAPE made me nearly run. He also had REDNECKER and that seemed a bit more bro than I wanted. I finally gave ONE BEER a real listen and fell in love with his writing. I love the line “felt like the end of the world, now the world don’t spin without him”. So, I started exploring. BOOTS was my second find (because I love my boots) and it was an instant repeat. Since then, I’ve had his music on constantly. Genuinely cannot stop listening.

I like how you analyze these songs! I’ve really been appreciating his lyrics too! Don’t feel like any country artist is putting out anything comparable to Hardy right now and I’ve had his songs on repeat. You said you don’t know if females are rocking out to Hardy but I am! One part of your analysis that I don’t think you have right is in the song “Hate Your Hometown”. I don’t think he’s singing about a girl just going to visit her hometown. I think it’s a girl thinking about moving back to her hometown because she can’t take living in a bigger city any longer. I get this impression from the lyrics right in the beginning, “this city’s breaking you down” and “you gotta go where you gotta go, you gotta do what you gotta do.” Personally coming from a small town, I think there’s a lot of people that can’t wait to get out and move to a bigger city. And a lot of country songs talk about this. Morgan Wallen’s song “More than my hometown” is a recent example with the lyrics that say, “your bright lights called, and I don’t blame you for picking up your big dream bags...” This scenario about leaving your little country hometown is sang a lot about in country music, but Hardy is doing the opposite and referencing someone that wants to go back to their hometown. Also, every single truck scenario that Hardy talks about in truck is 100 true, spot on, I’ve personally experienced many of these with guys and their trucks .

Totally agreed that while these songs *sound* like bro-Country, Hardy comes across genuine and honest in his writing. That’s all I’m looking for. Plus the LOUD ASS guitars and drums? YES. Joey Moi’s drum production will always get the nod from me, but the guitars here are doing something we haven’t heard on radio country for a while. We’re getting riffage over breakdowns and even in choruses (“BOOTS” has some killer chug sections and half-time moments, and the choruses in “SO CLOSE” have great guitar lines that we don’t see a lot). I think mainstream radio country tends to smash our faces with the vocal mix, and understandably so, but we get a lot of cool guitar work happening in the album that isn’t forced to sit way back in the mix like it usually is. This is my favorite country album of 2020 so far!

I think Ain't A Bad day is the standout. A lot of the breakup songs- yes, thats what it is- you see now are preaching this idea of "I don't deserve this" or "I'm better off now," which is a feeling nobody has. Ain't a bad day encapsulates the general dread of "I royally screwed up, and whatever happens, happens." Everyone gets that feeling, and I think it goes back to the authenticity of the album.

100% agree. I have cried in that one multiple times from times I've hurt my wife with my words. I asked her to listen to it closely, and before pushing play, told her "Baby, this song is about remorse."

As a european city slicker who dips his toes in country, Hardy is the first that I can get my friends to listen to and not get yelled at to take it off. Subscribing so I do't miss how you react to Mockingbird and Crow album, being blown away by all singles that have been releasesd so far for it.

Was briefly touched about in the video, but maybe the most impressive thing is how the whole album is so “dumb” in that bro country way, yet also so real in a way that each song could effect different people in each way. Aint A Bad Day hit me hard

I feel like “I hope you hate your hometown” is the yang to the ying in Morgan Wallen’s “More than my hometown”, which Hardy co-wrote

The best line on the album is on A Rock. “And one day your breath cost life itself Your book gets hung on Heaven’s shelf They say a few words like it’s a damn shame”

Been listening to this album on repeat all weekend...new fav for my weekend work mix. It’s perfect for when I’m at my third job of the week where I pick up Macadamia nuts for 10 to 12 hours on my hands and knees and needs music to keep you up and motivated.

Grady Smith yep...Monday through Friday I work 8 hours as a custodian at our local high school, then on Saturday I clean a private home for 6 hours and lastly on Sundays I pick up Macadamia nuts for 10 to 12 hours on my hands and knees...it’s blown all into rows, blowing all the leaves away leaving the nuts in nice rows for us to then go and sort the bad from the good to pick up...which is why when you go to the store to buy Mac Nuts they aren’t that cheap even here in Hawaii where it’s locally grown it’s still a bit expensive but at least affordable to be a item you buy as a treat once an awhile or for the holidays. It’s hard work but compared to my other jobs it’s actually quite relaxing. Getting to be outside in the peace and quiet with just some country music playing in the background is a great way to decompress from the stressful week and prepare for the coming one😎

I think I've listened to TRUCK at least 500 times now, lol. It's awesome! The whole album is awesome! I can't believe he doesn't have more fans. I wish the radio stations would play his songs, they just play the same 5 songs over and over, at least in my area they do.
