Germany has been heavily criticized in the last year for its cautious approach to supporting Ukraine. Kyiv and other western nations complained there was “Too little, too late” coming from Germany. Caution remains key for Chancellor Olaf Scholz, but he has loosened Germany's approach to wartime support to Ukraine.

I worked for 3 years in Germany in the 90s and I recall a joke in which one of the great challenges for a German is to be able to choose the best between two oranges in his hands. The associated decision process is always a long one when it is not avoided or swept under the carpet. But when a decision is eventually made, stay away from the liner's route!

Each country does need to determine what aid they are able to provide Something to remember here is that much of the world has spent decades expecting the United States to protect them One of the biggest complaints of NATO from the far Right in the United States is that most NATO countries do not spend the 2% of GDP that the charter requires, because of expecting the United States to carry the bulk of the water when it comes to war Several countries are now ramping up their spending in major ways Between Trumps isolationism rhetoric and Putin's desire for empire much of Europe is now worried about their own defense I think Poland is up to 5% of GDP. They know that if Ukraine falls they have a bullseye on them as far as Putin is concerned If Putin could conquer Ukraine, less likely every day, he would have to decide if he goes for the smaller countries of Moldova and the Baltic States or the larger prize of Poland before they can build up their military further

Something important to know, for all who are interested in history and/or support Ukraine: Rus' ought not to be confused with modern “Russia”, which derives its name from the Rus' but historically is a completely different state, which almost all its existence was at war with the Rus'. Just like the Holy Roman Empire was actually Germany, “Russia” is actually Muscovy, despite their best attempts to convince everybody otherwise. Its name “Russia" received only around 1721, when Peter I simply changed Muscovy’s name into the “All Russian Empire” (Russia originates from Rosia, name used by the Greek Orthodox Clergy in regards to Rus') Under the reign of Cathrine II Muscovites where even punished for continuing to identify as Muscovites, and were forced to call themselves Russian. Lands that Russia (Muscovy) claims were part of the original Rus', but actually weren't, are Novgorod, Suzdal, and Ryazan, since in historical texts of XI-XII centuries they are mentioned as separate entities from Rus'. They can be considered parts of extended Rus', although their culture was distinct from main Rus'. In 1493, Muscovite duke Ivan III appointed himself to be the Great Ruler of All Rus'. No other kings acknowledged that. From that point on Muscovy started to make false claims on Rus' ownership. “Russia” is an offshoot of Ukraine and not the other way round, despite what Soviet and Russian (Muscovite) historians have been trying to say for years. A Slavicised Finnic, then later, Mongolized offshoot. Kyiv was a developed cultured capital when Moscow was just another swamp village. Germany used to call itself the Holy Roman Empire, that didn’t mean they became the Romans, and all of a sudden had a right to claim whole of Italy and its history, but yet, that’s exactly what Russia (Muscovy) did in regards to Rus'-Ukraine, which is a horrible injustice!

I'm no expert at all in the history of that part of the world. I've stopped my reading after learning about the habit of the Cossack to bury alive those committing crimes with the corpse of the victim. No wonder the descendent of the Cossacks in Western Ukraine had no problem committing so many atrocities, must be their genes.

So far they've tried blaming it on the Americans, British, Norwegians and apparently now Germans. The goal is to poke the NATO jenga tower and see if there's any loose pieces they can find to break Western unity, get them to turn on each other and collapse the whole thing. So long as the Western unity to supply Ukraine holds, Russia can never get much further than they have and will lose in the long run. But in typical Russian fashion, they don't really understand how Westerners think, or the relationship of Westerners to their own governments, so they don't know how to convincingly execute such ploys on Europeans like they do on their own people and some former Soviet republics.

Well done Germany! I do think Germany has been criticized a lot more harshly than others who deserve the same. I think that's because people just expect more of Germany. People expect Germany to lead, rather than having to be dragged across the finish line. I hope Germany can take on that role. What NATO needs now is a very clear vision of where this should lead. Germany must make clear that NATO doesn't just want Ukraine to successfully resist, but to take back all their territory, including Crimea. We need the US, Germany and France to make clear that the goal is Ukrainian victory, not merely Russian defeat.

@@wr1791 Keep in mind, those numbers are a bit misleading due to how western GDPs evolved. German defense budget looks static only if you look at GDP percentage points, but in real, hard cash - what you'd buy tanks with - it actually rose by 50% over the last two decades. Due to this, even just the defense budgets of Germany+France together easily overshadow Russia's. There is no weakness towards any regional opponent simply because the EU is the "biggest kid on the block". On a side note, even the UK employed accounting tricks to get to their 2%. GDP just isn't a reliable indicator of actual military power. The problem with Germany is more that the money often may not be spent in a smart way, or the budget ends up not being used fully before the fiscal year is up, due to what a mess the procurement process is. And China is much too far away to have a military interest in Europe; they would be looking at Asian nations like Taiwan instead. The risk there is of an economic nature, i.e. soft power projection, trying to get other countries to owe them in order to be able to call in concessions.

It's a bit silly to criticize Scholz' communication style. Of course, the media always want to know everything. But this is about security policy, not about agricultural policy, financial policy or environmental policy. Security policy is much more explosive. It may even be NECESSARY for the government to give little information to the public. The important thing here is that it is done RIGHT. That is much more important than the communication style. Perhaps it was one of these journalists who, on the night before Waterloo, urged Napoleon for more transparency and a clearer style of communication. In other areas of politics, such as the ones mentioned above, transparency can of course be demanded in a completely legitimate manner.
@ddshiranui
@ddshiranui Жыл бұрын
The comment has merit, though. By not communicating as much as more vocal governments elsewhere, Scholz has allowed Germany to attract some undue criticism which undermines its standing in the world. For example, the list of military goods transferred to Ukraine didn't go live until half a year ago, leaving journalists to speculate with incomplete information and the public with only half the picture, whereas e.g. the US and the UK used their contributions for popularity points from day 1. Yes, security is important, but so are foreign relations and international prestige.

This turn isn't some goodwill gesture of "western solidarity". This is all about money and future arms sales. This was forced on Germany as a result of Poland's HUGE military procurement deal with South Korea. The Koreans are willing to share their technical secrets with Poland by agreeing to build heavy military equipment facilities within Poland. This opens up lucrative opportunities for both Poland and South Korea to offer alternative hardware to the German and French arms manufacturers. Both France and Germany's reluctance to provide timely aid to Ukraine has made eastern Europeans question their motives and has shaken their trust in the Western countries commitment to provide military assistance to Eastern Europe during a hot conflict, when they need it most. Germany now clearly is stepping on the gas to mitigate the disaster of their own making by writing a blank check to Ukraine, but the damage is already done. I foresee Poland and German relations souring very quickly, but Poland sees this matter as existential. They simply cannot afford to miscalculate by leveraging their security solely on the disposition of foreign arms manufacturers who may not provide timely support of their equipment to avoid angering the aggressor country. Poland is 100% correct to go this route. If Germany isn't careful, they could kiss their future sales to former Eastern block countries goodbye.
