This week Northern Ireland remembers the Good Friday Agreement was signed 25 years ago. This treaty has been one of the most complicated and at the same time most brilliant peace accords. Peace was not set in stone when all parties signed it on April 10, 1998. It was more like a route map with clear markers toward the end goal: peace in Northern Ireland.
Northern Ireland is vastly different than it was 25 years ago. The bomb attacks, the shootings, the sectarian killings, the soldiers on the street, the roadblocks... most of it has gone. But has peace brought reconciliation between the Catholic-republican and Protestant-unionist communities?
For NOS we visited one of the most divided places in Northern Ireland. A city that for years was synonymous with Bloody Sunday and the violence of The Troubles. Once, Catholics and Protestants lived next to each other, but violence drove them apart. The communities live nowadays on each side of the river Foyle, which splits the city in half.
Even the name of the city shows the division that still exists to this day: Protestants call it Londonderry and Catholics prefer Derry. What impact did the Good Friday Agreement have and has it brought the two communities together? We reflected on this with Brendan Tracey, who lives on the Catholic Cityside, and David Dougherthy, a Protestant from the Waterside.
The excellent camerawork is from Brian McVeigh.
