8:56 Richard is talking about the historical present tense, which is a well-used rhetorical device. The Romans used it, and it’s used in a number of languages, including English. It’s strange when people mention it as though it’s some novelty in English.

Even with the market/fair/shop sellers giving discounts to look like good eggs on the telly returning profits at auctions for items not bought at auctions is nearly impossible, just watch a few episodes of Bargain Hunt, Antiques Roadtrip et al. Even with the contestants on the standard Roadtrips being professionals

A couple cheated on the old game show Mr and Mrs by giving the multiple choice answers by choosing one which had the closest to the first letter of the alphabet. They won the prize and were never caught

I think Bullseye would probably suit a channel like Dave as original content for that channel and probably if it was on around the time of major Darts competitions, it woudl draw more eyes to it

We have had this argument about Ant & Dec versus old show hosts and entertainers. If you put Ant & Dec on a stage in front of an audience of only 200 people without a script could they keep those people entertained for hours. There are plenty of stories of Bruce Forsyth and Eric Morecombe having to be dragged off stage because they could just ad-lib so much.

If credits are so important, and I agree that they are, why are they so often ‘shrunk’ and subject to talk overs? What do the composers of the show’s theme tune think of their music being inaudible?

QUESTION : I want to know what possesses someone to apply to be in the audience of game shows. Is it just full of family members and staff or do people genuinely apply to be a part of the audience? In Wheel of Fortune they make those poor people clap and wooo everyime the wheel is spun...how awful

Not been in an audience for years but did it a lot in the 90s and it worked on a form of bribery. If you wanted to watch a popular show such as ‘A question of sport’ you normally had to watch something less popular first. Worst ever had to be ‘Stars in your eyes’. Not something I’d be interested in normally and the set changes and retakes meant it lasted hours and hours. Family were considering sending out a search party after hour six!

I was in the audience for Pointless (think it was 2016) and it was just a case of turning up outside the studio, Elstree, and the first 50 or so people got let in to watch it getting filmed.

Best way to get the camera off you in football is to do the clear the nostril thing they all did a few years ago though disappeared now.

Ban goal celebrations from the football. Maybe give them a separate show where footballers try to impress a panel of judges by presenting a series of artistic moves like sliding, bumping, bundling, kissing, diving, and so on, to which judges then award a score out of ten. Title? Off the top of my head, how about: 'I'm a Goal Celebration, Get Me Out of Soccer'? You could do a similar thing with the tennis: separate out all the aggressive fist-pumping, screeching when hitting the ball, and arguing with the umpire into its own show: 'Yes, I'm a Singles Tennis Player, but Lose the Attitude'.

Brian Clough, Jim MacLean, Jock Stein, Bill Shankly, Matt Busby, Alex Ferguson, these weren’t major characters??? Sky coverage has rotted the brains of English fans.

QUESTION: In the case of programmes such as Match of The Day, wherein people are watching for the content rather than the presenters, and therefore the presenters aren't very relevant to the programme's success, do you think there is the risk of the presenters themselves being overpaid?
