I've seen a lot of people who watched this movie for the first time nowadays say that it's full of cliches, what these people don't understand is that Halloween was the first to have these things, so nothing about it is cliche

If something contains a high level of craftsmanship, it could never be cliche. This is why a director like Bresson could make films that had an incredibly simple/somewhat generic storyline and somehow have them still all hold up 50/60 years later. The issue with Halloween is that there's a severe lack of craftsmanship at times.

A study done post-WWII showed that only about twenty percent of the soldiers had actually fired their weapons with a clear intent to hit the enemy, resulting in drastic changes to military training. People sitting comfortably in a theater or at home aren't scared the way the characters would be, and they all think they'd be Rambo in that situation. Very few would be.

So many people get caught up with identifying with the protagonist that they Stop thinking as themselves -- regular, untrained, every day people -- and project as someone who won't freeze, panic, and make dumb mistakes. And it's not just kids thinking this way. The majority of people are so comfortable and unaware of how quickly things can and do go wrong, they honestly believe they will channel Sidney Prescott and basically do what she did. They do Not get it. Sidney Prescott is a smart character. But, she's also a Lucky character. Her treatment by Ghostface was always Very Different than the treatment given to the other characters because of the relationship between the two. Just as Laurie Strode was treated differently by Myers because his plans for her were very different than what he had planned for everyone else (except for Loomis). Her friends had Zero chance because he never showed himself to them, so they honestly believed that their other friends were pranking them. The entire town thought this was what was going on the whole movie. Even Sheriff Brackett thought the pranks were a bigger nuisance than Myers would be because that's what happened every year. So, his focus was on that. No one wants to believe they would be like the victims, not the heroes. We would Not know there's anything wrong because there wouldn't be any reason to believe we're being stalked and targeted. Linda, Annie, Bob, Casey, Steve, Tatum, and the others had No idea what was going on. Why would they? Why would We? How many of us have been looked at and didn't notice because we were in our own world? Most of us don't know what's going on around us because, like all the other victims, we're Also not paying attention. Our focus is narrow and limited because we're oblivious. So, yep, every comment section for Halloween 78/II, Scream, etc goes like this, with an insistence that "Sidney Prescott is better than Laurie Strode" because of factors that aren't equal to both characters though Sidney Prescott owes everything to Laurie Strode. Haha. Apologies for getting so into it. I'm a Halloween fan through and through, so I get salty when people talk smack about it. haha

I've never really understood why people get angry when she drops the knife. It's not as if she knows she's dealing with a supernatural entity. If I stabbed someone in the neck with a needle, poked them in the eye with a coat hanger and then stabbed them, I would probably assume they aren't getting up again.

@@marcpoitras1785 It's a nitpick, I love the movie. I can forgive the first time she drops it, but once he keeps getting up, I would be holding on to that knife for dear life until help arrives. I wouldn't drop it multiple times, especially right next to his body, lol. And even if I assumed he was dead after multiple injuries, I wouldn't just assume he was alone. My paranoia would be through the roof.

As others have said, this is the movie that created all the tropes. And it was fresh and unique at the time. This movie is the reason why people started locking their car doors and checking in the back seat before driving off. No lie.

You are so right. I was 15 on opening night. While waiting to enter theater grown men were coming out telling us in line, do not see this movie, to turn around and go home...we all said, yeah right! But when Dr. Loomis looked over balcony and Michael was gone, I started to get up and leave. For months afterwards, a lot of people that had seen the movie had a hard time walking by a darkened room, getting into cars at night etc. It was truly an life altering movie.

In historical context, Laurie's actions aren't *that* dumb. Because we hadn't yet had immortal zombies as serial killers, yet. Michael Myers was pretty much the first one. And to that, Michael is meant to be (as Loomis said) "purely and simply evil". Which is why he disappears at the end. The shots of locations he's been, overlaid with his breathing, is meant to show an omnipresence of evil. Michael's no longer there, because he's everywhere . . .

I would say Leatherface & Norman Bates were the first slasher movie villains but solid analysis overall! Halloween more so perfected the cliches and laid out the “blueprints” of the slasher movie craze rather than inventing it. And without “Halloween,” there probably wouldn’t have been a “Friday the 13th” franchise since the producers of those films wanted to bank off the success of “Halloween.”

People also often have zero clue on how it is to be in an extreme situation like this. Science have shown that the brain actually shuts down several parts which leaves basically only your memory and a random generator, this is why people who often have to handle extreme cases like firemen train, train and train constantly so that they have access to exactly what to do in their memory when this happens. If there is no match in memory the random thing kicks in which is why some people just freeze, while some do crazy idiotic stuff (like throwing away the knife since that is what looked to be the dangerous thing).

Trivia: The movie the kids are watching just before Laurie gets chased by Michael Myers is The Thing from Another World from 1951. Four years after directing Halloween, John Carpenter would direct The Thing, a remake of the same film that the kids were watching on that TV.

To be fair John Carpenter didn't really make a remake of The Thing from another World 1951. That movie was based on a story called Who Goes There. When John Carpenter made his version of The Thing John Carpenter went back to the. Source material that being the Story Who Goes There John Carpenter talks about it on the audio commentary an bonus features for his version of The Thing. He took nothing from The Thing from another World he only took things from the story Who Goes There. This comes from the Shout/ Scream Factory Collector's Edition of John Carpenter's The Thing.

Fun reaction! Before this movie, it was actually pretty much unheard-of to have a villain who *just keeps not dying no matter how many times he's stabbed or injured* - this movie kinda originated that trope. So the whole idea of "keep holding the weapon, and stab him a bunch more times to make sure he's really dead" didn't really enter the public mindset until after this movie came out. :)

It doesn't have the same affect on people nowadays that it did 40 yrs ago when it first came out and was the 1st of it's kind. People are desensitized to horror in today's era cuz they have seen it all, but in it's day this movie was awesome, and remains a classic to this day. No gore, guts, special effects or super natural nonsense, just pure old fashion terror and suspense. This movie started a trend, and a whole new era, as well as style/type of horror film making, basically it was the game changer of horror. All slasher movie after, including the Friday the 13th series, as well as the Nightmare On Elm Street series based their films off of this and tried to duplicate the affect, success, and style of this film. There's a reason why it's still considered one of the greatest horror/slasher films of all times.

If that's the "scientific" reason given by the movie (I can't remember) then its bullshit and they should've stuck with that samhain stuff from halloween 2. If you've got six shots from a revolver straight to the chest, your lungs and probably heart are torn to shit. You won't be able to breath because of the holes in your lungs and you'll bleed out very quickly from the massive holes in your heart and possibly several arteries. Not to mention he got shot some more and blown up in the sequel. I could believe a lack of pain and even surviving stuff like the knife to the chest thanks to things like adrenaline and general toughness but all the other shit he's gone through (especially in the more recent movies like Halloween kills) shows there's definitely a supernatural aspect to him. Im not saying it's impossible to survive the wounds he sustained in the first movie alone, but he would require immediate and intensive medical attention and he certainly wouldn't be able to just get up and walk away like he did.

Halloween (1978) is my all time favorite slasher/horror movie. It is brilliant in so many ways. The more you watch it the more you see all the psychology laced in the writing and scenes. It is a thinking person's horror film. Also we fill in alot of the blanks in our minds which adds to the terror we feel while watching this film. What always made this so scary to me as a kid watching was this seemed possible and the older I got and the more I learned about certain psychological and mental disorders the more I realized that there are mental conditions were the patient doesn't have empathy or emotions or even feel pain. Some patients can exhibit great strength too. The suburbs at night can also be a creepy place. My favorite's of this franchise are Halloween 2 (1981) and Halloween 4 (1988) these are the only films I consider canon to the first film. Michael always seemed the most intelligent of all the slashers to me and that made him more threatening. I would love it if you watched part 2 and 4. Great reaction Natalie. I loved it.

I watched "Poltergeist", "Nightmare on Elm´s Street", "Friday, the 13th" and all these classics back when I was 6 or 7 years old - never bothered me at all. When I was 18, my parents went out one night and I stayed home to watch my little brother. He was sleeping in his room, I had the door of my room open, all lights were out, only my TV lighted the scene up a little. And at midnight, "Halloween" came up. And, at almost 19 years old, I almost shit my pants :D The score alone gives me chills after all these years - and I´m almost 40 by now...

One of the movies that served as a main inspiration for this movie was the 1974 Canadian slasher film "Black Christmas" which was arguably the first true slasher film ever made (many of the main tropes of the slasher genre originate in Black Christmas.) The camera prospective from the killers point of view is a noticeable similarity between the 2 films.

I’m recommending Trick ‘r Treat. It’s my fave Hallowe’en movie! Although if Halloween 1978 took this long to win a poll, I doubt that Trick ‘r Treat will win… ever. Not enough people have seen it because it didn’t get a theatrical release back in 2007, but it does have a cult following and I finally got to see it in a theatre last year. Anyone who has watched it will agree it’s one of the best Halloween themed horror movies of all time. And it’s just the right amount of scary for Natalie. I especially think Natalie will appreciate the casting, writing, and direction. Anna Paquin and Brian Cox are excellent!

I really think it was more to add to the tension as Michael gets closer and closer. Also, its realistic that nobody would answer their door if someone was banging and screaming; they have to think of their own safety too. I would call the police, sure, but open my door? no way. Besides. womens rights in a movie that repeatedly shows two women very scantily clad? JLC doesnt wear a bra in any of her scenes either. I love this movie, but its not a feminist movie at all. Thats ok! its a horror movie, and every horror movie up until the turn of this century had the same tropes, the women are promiscuous and unsympathetic, except for the final girl.

The significance of the original Halloween is that it was the ignition point for the slasher craze. That isn't to say it was the first slasher movie, because it isn't. Anything before Halloween (1978) is marked a proto-slasher because they have some elements of the Halloween formula, but don't check every single box. So these would be Homicidal (1957), Psycho (1960), The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974), Black Christmas (1974), and a number of Italian-made murder mysteries (called Giallos) that picked up some inspiration from those American proto-slashers and film noirs. After the huge box office success of Halloween (1978), subsequent slashers started copying that formula, and sometimes added in their own elements, so we then get Jason, Freddy, Jigsaw, and a bunch more. The Halloween franchise is fun to watch, but they aren't all direct sequels to each other. There are actually 5 distinct timelines that have been established. So Halloween (1978) is the beginning to 3 of those timelines. Halloween 3 is entirely self-contained and has no sequels. Rob Zombie's Halloween 2 movies are self-contained also, as the first is a remake of Halloween (1978) and the sequel is different from the original Halloween 2. The Legacy timeline goes Halloween (1978), then Halloween (2018), then Halloween Kills, and Halloween Ends. Each of the timelines ignores the events of the others. It would actually be impossible for each entry in the series to be the direct sequel of the prior film.

"WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU!?!?" lol, it's because they aren't genre savvy! They live at the dawning of the slasher film era. By the time Scream comes along, the kids are hip to what's going on. I really like John Carpenter's Halloween. It feels like something that could actually happen and, despite the environment not holding up if you're REALLY scrutinizing it (they're in the wrong part of the U.S. at the wrong time of year, with the wrong trees), the vibe feels very authentically 'autumn in the late 70s.' It really is an example of what can happen when you have a restrictive budget: Sometimes it's the limitations put on us that brings out our best work. It's a very lean, clean, movie, right down to the spare, director-written, score. Best of all, there's no gore! You will never catch me watching The Thing, because disgusting things live on in my head, forever, as intrusive thoughts, but I watch Halloween, at least once a year, with an easy smile on my face. As a child of the 80s, who was born one autumn in the 70s, I LIVED for this time of year, because I loved candy, loved Halloween, and of course loved getting birthday presents. Despite the fact that I didn't see this movie until I was an adult, watching it takes me back to my favorite autumns of the 80s, and THAT will never get old. It's not even October yet, and I'm already one pumpkin pie into the holiday season so, in spite of everything going wrong in the world, I at least have that.

They did a good job getting an "autumn in a Midwest state" vibe considering they shot the whole movie in Southern California and had to use fake leaves, which they gathered up when they were done with each scene so they could use them again. Also, because I'm not seeing the usual "Did you know?" comments, the Michael Myers mask was a William Shatner mask turned inside out, the scene where the kid stands there holding the knife with the parents and no one is saying anything (which is kinda creepy) is because they forgot to give them lines to say while the camera was pulling back, and the reason there are so many long shots of people walking is because they needed to reach the contractual obligation for runtime to be shown on TV (which ended up giving the movie a POV stalker effect).

Halloween (1978) is classic slasher - great movie to kick off Natmare Season! If Natalie is going to watch any of the Halloween sequels, she should jump to Halloween (2018). It’s far better than Halloween 2 because JLC is barely in that one. If it’s not too late, I highly recommend Natalie watch the best Halloween-themed film EVER: Trick ‘r Treat (2007).

Halloween isn't good because of JLC, JLC just happened to be in Halloween. And of the main characters, Loomis has personality and is important to the plot and making Michael scary, Michael is the icon obviously, Laurie is just a generic final girl (and that was true even at the time, her character type had been done before '78 many times over and the Halloween formula wasn't anything new, easy example being Black Christmas). The 2018 movie is about as far away from Halloween as you can go, instead of being a stalker slasher with Halloween theme/subtext and a story centred around what and why Michael is, it's an action drama about an in name only Laurie's ptsd.

@@dommoore6180 JLC basically created the Final Girl archetype, which admittedly was a product of the story; regardless, JLC’s acting was vastly superior to the other teenage actors and she deserves recognition for that. Dr. Loomis had the virtue of being right all along, but the actor’s portrayal was hammy at times, and it can be argued the reason why the police didn’t take him seriously - and consequently the threat of Michael Myers - was because his (accurate) characterization of Michael as “evil” was non-clinical and hyperbolic. Loomis was one step away from coming across as a vagrant holding a cardboard sign reading “Repent! The End Is Nigh”. That’s partly on the script and partly on the actor. In comparison, the two journalists in Halloween (2018) were more believable, as was Michael’s doctor (until his heel turn, of course). The point is that JLC’s portrayal brought credibility to the Slasher genre and was the reason why her character survived so long whereas other Slasher franchises usually killed off the Final Girl in the sequel(s) just to clear the path for a new one, because the antagonist was the real star of those movies. Halloween has always been different in that respect because of JLC.

This movie is brilliant for a few reasons but the number 1 reason in my mind is the suspense factor. This movie starts with, maintains and even builds suspense throughout the movie that it didn’t need a ton of kills or hardly any gore. I’m a fan of the franchise all around but this one stands out because the others lean heavy on normal horror/slasher tropes but the original Halloween was frightening based almost completely on suspense.

The 1974 film Black Christmas made John Carpenter want to make this film. Halloween Ends was the last of a trilogy that started back in 2018. The 70s in my opinion was the best decade for horror. Your reactions are always great. ✌

The 1970s has some very high highs and has some of the most iconic horror movies, But I think really only about 20 truly stand-out. The 1980s is superior by sheer number imo and even many of the bad horror movies of that decade are fun. 2014-current has had an impressive turnout as well, though many of the good ones many people haven't heard of because they are under the radar. I think the term for many of the modern horror movies is "elevated horror" with stuff like Hereditary. The '90s and 2000s had good horror movies as well, but I think that 20 years was the lowest point for horror since the 1960s. The 1960s obviously had some good and great horror movies too though, starting the decade off with one of the greatest horror movies ever made - Psycho.

Halloween was a milestone in the genre of horror ,can you imagine the first Halloween came out in 1978 ,l have made it a tradition 10 days before l sit and watch all Halloween movies day by day till the day of Halloween. This was THE first slasher movie. It started all the tropes. When we saw it in the theater it was creepy because we weren't jaded by all the copy cats since. Watch Halloween II because it's a literal sequel to this one, in fact it's a continuation of the same night. The rest you can forget, especially 3 because it doesn't even have anything to do with Michael Myers. Another good John Carpenter horror film is The Fog. Curtis is in that one too.

When the pacing is slow in a horror film it's to build this little thing called 'suspense'. This may be an alien to concept to young reactors of today, but it used to be the most effective aspect of horror. The anticipation of what the killer will do, when he does nothing, is still far scarier in my opinion than the actual acts of murder. That scene of Laurie crossing the scene was practically a shot for shot recreation of Lyla approaching the Bates house in Hitchcock's Psycho. It takes a long time because the longer it takes the greater the anxiety you are supposed to feel. Modern audiences seem to have no time for anxiety, they want everything now. This attitude loses them the opportunity to truly feel as scared as they could do otherwise. Laughing through the climax of Halloween is a product of changing expectations in cinema (and I can't pretend to be happy about it, because most modern horror movies aren't scary to me at all).

I've read that the story is set in the Midwest, but they filmed it in southern California. They actually painted leaves to spread on the ground to make it look like fall. Of course, it was a tight budget, so they reused the leaves.

This movie is still more realistic when it comes to it's characters making "dumb" decisions than many modern horror films. Myers thrived off of the complacently of people enjoying Halloween night. Almost none of these characters knew what kind of danger they were in so they acted frivolously. The only ones who survived were the ones who were on edge and felt or knew something was very wrong.

I'm happy to see people watch these movies for the first time, they are the pioneers of the classic horror movie genre. Aside from the usuals like Scream, Friday the 13th, Halloween, Chucky, etc. there are some other classics that I think everyone should watch. The Shinning, and The Thing being some of them, the odd thing is that watching these movies never really frightened me even though I was a child, however, the one movie that I recall watching and being somewhat scared of was The Exorcism of Emily Rose. I don't know why but that movie frightened me, maybe cause it was more supernatural than the others. The Exorcism also scared me and I think you should watch them if you haven't already. Going back to The Shinning, if you do end up watching it I think you should also watch Dr. Sleep which is the sequel.

Halloween (2018) is totally worth seeing. It's a modern direct sequel to this film that asks what would the events of the 1978 film do to a person in the following 40 years. It essentially retcons all of the earlier sequels from existence, so you can easily skip them.

The sad thing is that movie goers today are so use to the blood, the gore, the kills that they cannot truly appreciate how terrifying this movie was when it was first released as it was the first of it's kind. We had horror before with Dracula, the Wolfman, Creature from the Black Lagoon, etc. This was the first teenage slasher film and it scared the crap out of every teenager that watched it. The music is iconic and this film launched Jamie Lee Curtis into stardom.
