How Hearing Aid Directional Microphones Reduce Background Noise

Thanks for the new video. I am new to this whole process. In the last two days, i have been in the worst background noise while at a restaurant. I believe i do have the best hearing aids for me at this time and i trust my audiologist and the way he programmed them. However , if i have too many more situations like today, i will probably go and immediately purchase an ALD to not repeat todays experience.

Very useful video explaining the technology and challenges. Having just upgraded my hearing aids this week to Phonak Audeo Lumity 90's I was very impressed today in a busy and noisy restaurant with a group of 20 friends. There was a huge improvement in speech in noise over the previous 6 Yr old Phonak devices. Very pleased with the results.

Thanks for the info about consonant sounds being in the high frequency range. I have major high frequency loss and now I understand why it is so hard to hear those sounds. The software for my old Signia Pure 7px’s is not the most reliable but it does a great job of controlling the directionality of the microphones when it works.

This video got me thinking the myphonak app should have a figure showing what the microphone adjustment looks like in different modes sort of like resound

I think we need aural rehabilitation in addition to hearing aids so we can fully retrain our brains , do audiologists also help with this or would this be the help of a SLP ( speech language pathologist) it is a lot of work but it seems like it will help us as well , thoughts ? , the technology only does so much but this may not benefit everyone but i am willing to give it a try to help with this

In the video thumbnail you have pictured an Oticon REAL which don't use directional microphones to better SNR, building on their open sound navigation. I believe Oticon are the only mfg who at least say they don't use directional microphones?. My go-to hearing aids to fit are the REAL since I have very little patient complaint about them, and they perform really well in quiet/noisy situations (from patient feedback). They are also really easy to fit with REM which I like a lot! Not sure where I'm going with this, but it was interesting choice of hearing aid in the thumbnail on this video topic. I would think a Phonak hearing aid would suit better with their Ultrazoom feature with directional microphones, or something like Gnresound ultra focus program. Interested to know more about your preference to fit between these mfg, focusing on performance and not streaming capability's.

Great video! Thank you! The more I can learn about them helps me so much. I’m still trying to understand what my HA are doing, if at all, for directionality. They are Resound RU960-DRWC and VA set it in some Omni 360 mode. But is that all it does? Do I have any control over anything? I do see strange times like in the car when the window is down and wind noise hits the left HA that the wind noise changes to present it in the right HA but it is clearly in the left. Scratching the HA confirms it. It’s weird. I feel it is something in the directionality mode.
