This video really explains it well. Low drop: impact to calves. High drop: impact to knees

I guess this philosophy adds to the argument that you really should have a few variables in your running shoe rotation. Great work JP 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👍🏾

this is true. Running with zero heel drop is the way the human body is designed. Problems come by changing from heel drop to no heel because we aren't used to it especially with the high volume/high intensity. Running/Sprinting barefoot on grass is a good way to start.

I think for most people a medium to low amount of drop is the sweetspot, enough to help out the achiless and foot a little but not too much so that the knee might suffer

Balance could be helpful! Or maybe variety can be helpful as well. There are some studies that show that using a variety of running shoes may help with injury risk

I'm experiencing Achilles soreness after my short-sprints workout using Xero minimalist shoes. I would use other shoes, but need a very wide toe box because am rehabilitating a petite/ tailor's bunion. I've been using Xero shoes since last year, but only recently started experiencing sore Achilles. I do stretch and move my ankles around to relieve soreness, but will my Achilles tendons EVER become accustomed to minimalist shoes? How did cavemen avoid sore Achilles tendons after sprinting after their prey? And love your videos!

Confusion /contradictory 1) Heel strike leads to knee pain, shin splint Forefoot strike leads to calf pain.. (got this from another article) 2) for knee pain wear zero drop.. For Achilles ankle pain wear high heel to toe drop.. 3)For heel strikers wear high heel to toe drop For forefoot strickers wear zero drop

You've missed an important causal link here: foot strike, which can be influenced by the drop! I bet a month's wage that buying zero drop shoes while keeping a heel strike will not alleviate knee pain. The lower stack height might even make it worse.

But u cant heel strike in zero shoes, literally they push u naturally for forefoot/ mid strike

@@slavasss2189 Yes you still can if you're conditioned to heel striking in heel drop shoes. That's why they say there can be a long transition period for some.

@@slavasss2189 You're right if someone is running barefoot. Then it's almost impossible to heel strike/over stride. But you cause way more issues barefoot as most people aren't ready for it (takes weeks/months to transition) I think someone with really sloppy form and super cushioned shoes (lots of stack like hoka trail shoes) could easily over stride and heel strike though just like @rashb3994 says.

Shoes are a bad solution to a bad problem - paved roads. But the reality is, a lot of people don't have access to local trails, and trail running is a skill that's harder than running in a straight line on a flat, hard surface.

I rmb ppl talking about high drop is more suitable for heel strikers while low drop are better for mid to forefoot runners. Is that true? Also, is the reason why the high drop cause more stress to the knee due to easier to heel strike in high drop shoes? Great video JP!
@JPGloria

It kind of depends. For long distance running, I try not to complicate it. Just find what is comfortable to run in. Like people who tend to tolerate forces better in the knee may use higher heel drop shoes and land closer to the heels. And for the last thought, to keep it simple, yes!

My toes bother me when I run I need more pressure towards the balls of my feet

It matters only if your are landing on your heels while running - and that's wrong in the first place. The human body is made to run with the balls of the foot. So no heels needed at all.
