Actually in some Rebels episodes,when she is around family,her accent comes back. I grew up in a Polish family and spoke English with no accent but sometimes it would just happen at gatherings. You see this a lot in multi lingual families.

That's what I was coming here to say. We actually watched the Rebels episode a day or two before the Bad Batch episode and she did roll back into her home accent as she spoke to more of her own people. Even when she started talking *about* home her accent started coming back and got gradually thicker the deeper into the problem she got. They did an amazing job with that and having her younger self with a matching accent to the rest of her family was perfect.

Someone on another channel suggested: when she's in her native land, the accent indicates she's actually speaking Twi'lek. In Rebels, she fell back to her accent in an argument with her father. This is easy for me to assimilate 😁
@FerDeLance06

That's a good theory. When we first saw Oola(?) in Return of the Jedi, she didn't speak English - or Basic - so yeah, it's clear that Twi'leks have their own language. Using accents to emphasise this rather than filling the screen with subtitles is a good idea.

Happy Taco Tuesday Meg & StarForceOne! I had a strong twangy southern accent when growing up but after joining the Navy I quickly adopted a neutral midwestern accent and when I tell people this they don't believe I used to have a southern accent. When Ben Browder was making Farscape, he said his kids adopted a strong Australian accent while he has a strong southern accent from growing up in Tennessee. I'm pretty sure his English wife may have helped that as well. It was weird in one episode of Rebels when Hera would talk to her father with a French accent and after thinking about it I just assumed she was speaking Twi'lek to him and not Standard. Great video and hope those nasty Jawas didn't give you too much trouble. I'll be checking out StarForceOne and subbing to his channel next. Till tomorrow, TTFN.👍🍸🍸🍸🍸🍸

@@LaraA55 That's great you traveled when young. Unfortunately I never made it Australia and Canada when I was in the Navy. It took me about four years to change my accent by listening to what I was saying and reading out loud exactly what was in books and magazines until I got it right. I have relatives back home who say I sound like a "damned Yankee" but we all laugh about it. It's awesome that you can switch back and forth, I've tried talking southern again but it's just too hard and doesn't sound natural to me anymore. You're right about StarForceOne, I've been watching his videos today and he's got a lot but they're short, just hit play all and sit back and enjoy; I wish they were longer but they're still good.
@JohnFourtyTwo
@JohnFourtyTwo 3 жыл бұрын
@@LaraA55 A lot of Americans think the Australian, English, and New Zealand accents are the same but are pretty good at knowing the difference with the Irish and Scottish accents.😁 I too was going the Air Force when I was a youngling but my best friend in high school convinced me to join the Navy instead. I tried switching over when my enlistment was over but the Air Force recruiter said they don't take people from other services and they don't take their own back once they get out and try to come back in; so I reenlisted in the Navy instead. Lesson learned is to stick to your original plans.🛫⚓ Yes, StarForceOne's videos are very informative and still going through them. I've heard other KZbinrs talk about keeping their videos at least 10 minutes long because it's better for the algorithm but StarForceOne seems to know what he's doing with over 100K subs.👍

In many countries, as well as different region in the same country, dialects and well as verbal inflections can be drastically different. Ex: US and UK citizen both speak English, but in difference ways. As do people born in Liverpool, England have verbal inflections different from a person from Cornwall or Newcastle. The same can be said for US citizen from Boston compared to New Orleans.

In Canada too. Western Canadian English has a subtly different accent than Ontario and both places have dialect unique to them. The East Coast is quite distinct, and Newfoundland is very unique! We have pockets of unique dialects too - the English up North is often spoken as a second language so it has a unique flavour, and pockets with lots of Low German influence also have a unique way of speaking. French too - Quebecois is different from Continental French (i.e. French from France), which is different yet from Western French (I speak Franco-Manitobain and while I understand both Quebecois and Continental French w/o issue, they don't always understand us). Languages are so interesting!

It's a lot to do with how old a person is when they're surrounded by another accent. My wife moved from the US to the UK when she was eighteen, and when she visited her home town a few years later people thought she was English. Meanwhile I moved UK to US when I was twenty-seven, and fifteen years later still have my English accent.

I remember watching Clone Wars S1 E13 "Jedi Crash", which features Aayla Secura, the Twi'lek Jedi master, and the lemur-like pacifist aliens. Her accent actually changed during the episode. In Act 1, she had a sort of upper-class Spanish accent. Then in Act 2, it was a French accent. And in Act 3, she was back to Spanish. It's weird how the voice actress couldn't sustain the accent. And I was recently rewatching Season 3 of Rebels, and got to the episode where Hera reunites with her dad. And it was cool how her French accent creeped back in when she argued with him. That was a really nice touch.

So, a few years ago I was writing a story about a French girl who gets adopted at a young age and raised in Gotham, and I asked my French-Canadian coworker who still had a noticeable French accent after living in the U.S. for about 10 years if it was realistic for my character to still have a French accent in her teens. She told me, "It all depends on how often she speaks French at home and really, what age she is when she leaves her native country." The way she put it to me was that the younger someone is when they leave the land where their native language is spoken, the easier and quicker they will shed that accent. In Marlene's case, since she was in her 50s when she moved to the U.S. and since she still spoke mostly French at home with her family and at work on the bi-lingual phone line, she still carried an accent, though not one as strong as when she first moved here. So, the same thing would happen with the Twi-leks. As you noted, if they spend most of their lives on Ryloth and don't leave until they are adults, that accent will stick with them. And if they leave early enough in life to shed the accent, they may find it slipping back in when conversing with family or if they get upset/angry/worked up. I find the same thing myself. I was born and raised in the a Southern state in America, where the dialect accent is very different from from the North or West. I never developed an accent of any kind myself. Yet, when around others who have such accents, I will automatically slip into matching their accents without meaning to, and when I get mad I definitely sound Southern. If Hera spends most of her time being around a bunch of people from different parts of the galaxy speaking Basic in their own way, she may sort of slip into matching or approximating their accents until she gets to a point where she sounds like she doesn't have any type of accent at all.
@charles1413

your friend is right however it can differ on what kind of French you speak. A French Canadian will have an easier time shedding the accent than a French citizen.

I r found to be a bit offensive. Why are all the North American accents people who live in slums or are barely getting by? Also I’ve noticed the more attractive/humanoid aliens get European/NZ/Australian/American accents.. why the more monstrous aliens get Asian, middle eastern, Caribbean accents.

Gotta' chime in here since my Edge of the Empire character is a Selkath, in the The Old Republic MMORPG the Selkath speak in sort of a fractured Hungarian. Not sure if this would carry over to the modern canon or not, Chata Hyoki (the only Selkath to have actual lines of dialogue in anything attached to the modern canon) definitely has an accent but doesn't speak enough for me to tell what kind it is.

Looking how their heads are shaped, the fact their ears are not shaped the same as ours, it makes sense that their accent would be like that, less hard consonants, their hearing is probably weaker on the upper frequency range. Lucas may not have had a plan but his choice actually makes sense with the appearance of their physiology if not their actual phsysiology.

I assumed that Obi-wan's accent portrayed by Ewan McGregor was always meant to transition into Alex Guinness' own voice the older he got. This would be very important once the show Kenobi kicks off in the future.

I'm currently reading Tempest runner and noticed the french accent of Lourna Dee. Which made me wonder if all twilek had it. I just watched this video and read many comments and I'm still wondering how come nobody mentions the twilek dancer in Jabba's palace which can be heard talking in French, at the beginning of Return of the Jedi.

I believe she hidden her accent due joining the rebellion so in case someone try to catch her she use her accent on them to make them confused to her accent (except for Thrawn he's like an detective) that why she hidden her accent from the Empire but only use it for her family.

I think most of us who live someplace culturally different from where we were born may have gone through that whole changing dialect or accents thing. For me it was from Jamaica to being in America... in particular the south. I had a similar change when i moved from Florida to Pennsylvania. Over time you just adopt the same way of speaking as those around you. But yeah it does definitely come back when speaking to people of the same cultural background.

Well, since I'm strictly a Skywalker Saga girl, and never saw any of the cartoons, I never heard that particular character's "French accent", but I know that one of the first Twilek I ever saw, namely poor doomed Ola Rey, when she realized that Jabba was going to send her to be Rancor fodder, begged for her life and what I heard was a very French "ne me tuez pas"("don't kill me"). And I should know, I'm French !

True, as youn note in your on-screen text, that neither Obi-Wan nor Palpatine are from Coruscant while both sport a Coruscanti accent, but I think there's a reason for that. In the case of Obi-Wan, he was taken into the Jedi Order at a very young age and raised in the Jedi Temple. Because of his young age, he would naturally have taken on the same kind of accents and speech patterns as those around him. With regards to Palpatine, it's very possible that he became involved in galactic politics at a young age--rather similar to how Leia did, being a part of programs that had her spending a great deal of time on Coruscant and otherwise interacting with people from Coruscant--in which case development of that accent would have been natural for him as well over the years. However, it is equally possible that Palpatine intentionally cultivated that accent in order to sound more cultured and respectable in order to win people over or manipulate them in the early stages of his rise to power. Regarding Hera's accent and why her Ryloth accent had mostly disappeared by the time of Rebels, I guess it is possible that it faded naturally after leaving her home at a young age, but I rather think she intentionally stopped using it. This is supported by her tendency to slip back into that accent in times of heightened emotional stress; if she had naturally grown out of the accent, she would most likely maintain the accent she grew into even when distressed, but if she consciously put that accent behind her and was using the more neutral American-like accent by choice, then her conscious control could easily slip and her natural accent come through when she's really upset. I think she intentionally abandoned that accent to separate herself from a painful past, where her mother was killed and her father cared more about his fight with the Empire than he did about his daughter. Those are my thoughts at least.

As a rule, the younger a person is the more likely they are to pick up the accents of those around them, and the more completely they will adopt that accent. For example - and I realise this is anecdotal evidence, so take it for what it’s worth - my wife moved from the US to the UK when she was eighteen. When we went back to Ohio to visit three years later, people in her home town thought she was English. Six years later we moved back to the States, when I was twenty-seven. We’ve been living in Ohio now for nearly fifteen years, and my English accent hasn’t really changed at all. For another example, my father was Glaswegian (for my American friends - Trainspotting accent). He spent a lot of his youth in England, both for school and family, and most of the time he spoke with a clear English accent. When he spoke to someone else from Glasgow, however, his own accent mirrored theirs perfectly, to the extent that they could pick out where in the city he grew up. So we can assume that Hera moved out into the galaxy while she was still at that impressionable age, and perhaps that she also deliberately tried to drop her Ryloth accent on account of her dispute with her father. It makes perfect sense that her accent would change almost completely, but also that it would come back when she’s under emotional strain and talking to her father.
