One trick for the noise when listening to someone is to slowly lower the RF Gain & Increase the Volume(AF gain) to make up for the drop in volume You can find a sweet spot combo that has mostly voice and much reduced noise. 🙏

Good point. I usually use the IPO to lower and increase sensitivity.

Hi Frank, just wanted to say I listen to your videos while I walk the dog in the evening. Really enjoy your stuff. I’m new to hf and my ft710 and you’ve helped me get on the air -Chris Kb8rua

This was fun to watch. I have my General license but haven’t gotten on the air yet. It was nice to hear “Just try your best.” Makes me feel like I don’t have to have a $4000 huge Yagi setup to get somewhere!

You’re right. You don’t need a fancy $300 super Antenna . Or a fancy $2000 radio. You can make a quarter wave ground plane Antenna which is relatively expensive. It’s 4 wires and a connection. when I started, I felt out of place, because the noise would make me feel I wasn’t doing something right. I also didn’t get anyone to talk to me for a couple of months. When I first started. That’s because I was using 5 W. Fortunately somebody did in Texas. Now I do mostly POTA. I figured out how to speak to people in that type of environment. Either way, take your time have fun. And enjoy your new license capabilities.

Nice video ! The only problem with HF is that you need fairly big antennas to cover the entire range and that is not always feasable when you're living in a large, densely populated city and in a rented studio (like I do). Also, I believe in Belgium you're not supposed to keep your HF-radio (not even for just listening) when your radio license is expired (like mine is).

I was in my car, and of course my antenna is compromised, but it does an "OK" job in listening to HF. Plus, my screwdriver antenna, I'm able to have a range of frequencies with a relatively small antenna. As for the home, you may try a loop antenna, I know it has a very high Q, but. it's something you may try. -73.

Great video to demonstrate what to expect on HF. I just upgraded to general not too long ago and have only made two contacts so far (being picky, both DX). Right around the 14:10 mark on your video I could hear WA3QLW. Ironically, I've only heard her on VHF on a local linked repeater system in CO. For HF, I'm using the FT-891 w/ a 1/2 wave inverted V dipole using an LDG 1:1 Balun. So far, I've only played on 20m because I live under HOA restrictions and a small backyard. If I had an antenna tuner, I'd try 40m w/ the same antenna. I may see if I can pull off 40m by adding links to my existing 20m dipole. 🤞 Anyway, thanks again for the video. -- 73, KFØPLR
