The thing you don't know about the ft818, what I have found out, M7HIJ. Run a 6mm Earthbond wire vertical direct into the feed of an antenna, but don't touch the outside earth. Connect the other side to the top of a wonder wand tunner, make sure your radio is set to the rear antenna, use your coax that is connected to your outside antenna, fit this to your BNC connection at the front, this is then your counterpoise wire. At the rear of your radio run a 31ft 6mm ground wire. The tunner, will tune your radio flat btm swr, I've spoken to Russia on a signal 7/8 BRAZIL POORTO RECO. NEATHERLANDS 8/9

Hi im a new ham I have a tech and I just bought a IC705. question: if I but the external battery pack for 10 watts. could I just keep it a 10 watts. or is there a reason to go below 10 watts? ........ I plan on buying 1 100 watt amp to make to more versatile.

Ya you can keep it at 10 watts. Some say 5 watts is low power. QRP.

That is a good question. I just found out here in LA, there is a test on WX alert on Wednesday around 11 AM, I see if that works. I didn't know they had Tests, I got startled, but I guess that's what it's meant for. To wake you up.

Have you ever operated actually mobile with this long antenna? Of course it would require a tri-mag mag mount. I recently had an HRO sales rep tell me to remove the rubber boots and put aluminum foil on the metal after scraping off the paint. Then put one layer of brown mylar packing tape to protect the car finish. He said the capacitance would increase quite a bit.

How long antenna are you talking? Tri-mag mount by itself does much more in lowering your SWR, but the number one thing I do is to place a choke near the mount, this way common mode current won't come back to my rig.

It turned out that the power supply was coming apart, the etching on the board was really deteriorating. I figured out there was a power supply because I would wiggle the power cord, things I used to do when I was a kid fixing computers. It just reminded me of how simple things can be diagnosed with an imagination. So I got a new power supply and it finally worked perfectly. So it wasn’t the soundboard or any of the sound components, it was just the power supply being intermittent.

Question: Can you change the Span (zoom in) while in FIX screen mode? As you get about 3 pixels per USB channel on 20m band. I don't like the fact that the waterfall display shifts (when moving the cursor left-right) in a quite ugly way when in CENTER screen mode. Visually I would prefer the FIX screen mode, but that I would like to set the start and stop frequency, as for voice you can discard a quite big chunk on the left side (CW and digital). So you get more pixels per channel.

@17'25" the screen width is +25 and -25kHz, thus 50kHz, not 25.

Can you just run a copper ground strap from your car frame or something grounded to the base of the antenna where it screws into the into the mount?

How do you unlock the other bands like AM and Air? I just got mine and all it has is 1-3. Can't enter anything outside 140/220/430.

You can't, those are built in, even when you use a program to upload your frequencies, those are standard to the radio. Who know, there might be a hack.

Thanks for this. I didn't know how to set this up. I can now use my Baofeng GT-3TP to monitor Marine channels 16 and 14, emergency and local port authority channels. I programmed the radio to all the Marine channels using CHIRP.

I only listen to AM broadcast so I wouldn’t need to pull out the antenna. With the internal ferrite rod antenna just turn the whole radio for best reception. I wish everyone knew this. Haha. (The guy at the ball game sitting front of me on AM. Nice video. I maybe have to take a look. More cute than the old African made Free Play.

Yup, still works. Best size and power. Great for powering my laptop and other devices. Not so great for ham radio equipment, but well worth the price.

Maybe I’ll try doing that. I really like the diamond mount. I don’t have to do anything to it other than making sure the grommet screws touch the metal of the hatchback. Sure I might not be able to get 40 m, 20 m works out OK

I wish it was that easy, I just bought 2 and they came programmed together. I told her not to mess with them. Long story short, when I got to put the ctcs on 136 mhz I hit menu then exit, dose not change it it’s still at 0. Idk what else to do
