How Hideo Nomo Threw The Greatest No Hitter Of All Time

After making the daring move to come to America from Japan and play in the MLB, Hideo Nomo became a sensation and rookie of the year in 1995. Then just one year later, Hideo Nomo threw what many consider to be the greatest no-hitter ever thrown by completing the feat at Coors Field in 1996. Something that has not been done since in a time where the Rockies had one of the best lineups in the game as the Coors Field effect was at it's peak.

My wife, who is from Japan, and I were having dinner on our first wedding anniversary about four blocks south of Coors Field that night. It was cold, almost snowing. When we left the restaurant to drive home, we found the game on the radio and listened to the call as Nomo completed the no-hitter. Good times!

This is one of the most impressive because this was Coors at the height of the steroid era and before baseballs were kept in a humidor at Denver's altitude.

Randomly saw Nomo at a mall in Hawaii back in the late 90's. I was sitting on a bench, and the first thing that caught my eyes, were two ginormous calves?!! I immediately looked up and saw that it was him. Let me tell you, this dude is built like a linebacker!! On TV his built looks nothing like it does in person... I was impressed!

On April 16, 1940, Bob Feller threw the first Opening Day no-hitter in history. Nomo’s one with the Red Sox was earlier in April, but it was in game 2 of the season, so technically not earlier in the season.

Nomo’s no-no was the most improbable considering the venue (Coors Field), the opponent (Rockies scored 961 runs in 1996), a two hour rain delay before first pitch.

Try throwing a no-hitter at Coors Field against that Rockies line-up with a 0.302 team batting avg. Still the only no-hitter at Coors Field in more than 31 seasons. Not again in our lifetime?

Ummm....yeah....I'm a Red Sox fan since conception, and I have to bring up a Yankee, DON LARSEN, who threw a PERFECT GAME TO CLOSE OUT THE WORLD SERIES....that simply is the greatest pitching game ever, no argument. It is most likely the greatest single game achievement in all of sports history(with AL BUNDY's 4 td game being the only exception)
