How History Animators Make Their Maps

I've spent the last 2 weeks researching how the best animators on KZbin make their maps and I've found some answers, I hope they help others.
Popular Illustration software:
Paid ➤ Photoshop/ Adobe Illustrator
Free ➤ Gimp/ Paint/ Inkscape
Specific MAP Making Software ➤ Inkarnate/ Wonderdraft/ Azgaar's fantasy map generator
Popular animation software:
Paid ➤ After effects/Geolayers/ Adobe animate/ Apple motion
Free ➤ Blender/ Unreal engine
Kings and Generals map source ➤ aecharters.co.uk/
- Also uses Wonderdraft (Thanks to a helpful comment)
I've always wanted to know how popular animators made their video but was stuck at the first hurdle of understanding the maps they used.
This is just what I think these creators use, some of them may not be correct i.e. Invicta but the others I'm fairly sure are.
At around 2:05 When I said 'they are similar, they are quite different'. I meant the map styles are similar in presentation but the actual maps themselves are unique. Apologies at 2:20.
If you would like to support me please leave a comment, like and subscribe. It means the world and its completely free ;£ Thank you :)

I got a response from HistoryMarche a while ago about how they make their cities and maps, I think they said it is all drafted up on photoshop, like was said in this video, and I've recognized some assets in their videos being directly from Inkarnate

@@ThomasWhiteX Lol I do not actually use Inkarnate that much aside from its free version, but I recognized a lot of the same building models used in the battle maps - though whether they also use Inkarnate or source it from a mutual database I don't know. There's a mapping program called Azgaar's Fantasy Map Generator which has a ton of tools to custom mapping that I prefer in that regard - though probably not the absolute best suited for European history maps (comes pretty close at least). Great video by the way!

Nicely done Thomas - I know some of the guys at K&G, Epic, and the guy who does History Marche is a buddy of mine. You’re spot on - they use photoshop to generate some of the maps, Epic gave me the website for Blue Marble which is great spot to get NASA sat images, and premiere / af is a great software for animation. One thing about HM - he does his own maps - he’s a total beast when it comes to his work. If I may make a suggestion - You need to look into House of History and Hikma History as well. Amazing content as well.

Thank You! That's so cool you know the teams from other channels - must be useful! It's reassuring I got some of it right haha. Blue marble sounds interesting too - I do remember coming across that in my research but I'll have to revisit it. Id love to use af / premier for animation - maybe for when I'm monetized. Crazy about HM though! Making all the maps from scratch in such a short time - really surprised about that. He is a beast for sure. I'm more than happy to take suggestions - I will definitely look into them. Thanks again - the help is truly appreciated.

16 years ago I recreated the battle of el Alamein with Power Point, overlapping squares, rectangles, circles, lines etc... and using its animation tools. I also used "the battle" by H. Zimmer from "the gladiator" as soundtrack; for some reason I had found a file with that song in my second (or third?) hand laptop. Thought I'd weigh in as a KZbinr who's used multiple of these processes. Yeah, the NASA world map is really good, especially because of how high-def it is, although for closer shots I would often use other images. I use GEOlayers now, which is really good for zooming in and not having to trace out every country by hand (though be warned can be a real pain to work with sometimes [and slow]), but something else I would recommend is WonderDraft. It's a (paid) program generally used for things like fantasy maps, but it works very well for an old paper map aesthetic. Channels like Embrace Historia are really good examples of WonderDraft in action.

From conversations i’ve had on youtube with the team they have told me that for cities like Rome the outside walls are still visible to this day and can thus easily be thraced, and for smaller towns featured in battle map it’s mainly artistic guesswork.
