Hydrogen is the simplest element in the universe. And excitement is growing from nations and investors looking to harness its power to make clean, green energy. In this edition of Bloomberg Green, we speak to Australian billionaire Andrew Forrest about his big pivot from dirty coal to clean hydrogen. And Snam CEO Marco Alvera talks to us about his price target for the gas over the next decade. Plus, we break down the difference between gray, blue and green hydrogen, and speak to our BloombergNEF analysts about the possible limitations of the gas.

Yes, “the introduction of hydrogen as an alternative fuel has been slow in relative comparison to other industries.” One way to get things moving in aviation is to use existing jet engine technology at the outset. This is why Cummins CEO Tom Linebarger thinks hydrogen-fueled internal combustion engines can help us get there: “By creating a viable use case and demand for hydrogen in the near term, we can accelerate hydrogen infrastructure build-out and increase scale production of vehicle storage tanks. Both advances are necessary for the widespread adoption of fuel cell powertrains.” Along this thinking, using all hydrogen in the beginning - without regard to its source - should also help “accelerate hydrogen infrastructure build-out.” As far as setting up the refueling infrastructure is concerned, green hydrogen, blue hydrogen, and gray hydrogen are all the same. Indeed, gray hydrogen should be used first because it is already here and can easily help us set up and test the new delivery network. Once we have it in place and things are working, we can then shift to blue hydrogen and ultimately to green. This is the sound way of doing things and the way we have done things before. So stop conflating the source of the hydrogen with the means of delivering it. One has nothing to do with the other. Arguments against the source of hydrogen should not get in the way of us setting up a safe and efficient way to deliver it to those that need it.

This discussions about hydrogen and electric cars sometimes reminds me of the time when people rode horses and the car was a strange thing for the rich to have fun and never will be a solution for the ordinary people .

I can see every region using their off peak wind and solar PV electricity making hydrogen after powering air sourced heat pumps, recharging electric vehicles and grid batteries.

The only reason Hydrogen has not been developed before is it is so cheap it would have killed the oil industry..now that we are at Peak Oil we can have a fuel for combustion engine that only water comes out the tail pipe.

Hydrogen will probably be a good way to store energy for future use, but for transportation, doesn’t seem to be competitive. Future will tell …

Another method to produce hydrogen pioneered by HPQFF and Pyrogenesis is to extract hydrogen from methane using plasma

Hydrogen fuel is the only way to go now. It's getting cheaper and cheaper as we go.... Lyon H2o Ltd is the Hydrogen energy company to run with..among the many other companies.

you know this all sounds great until... it does not! Do you know what happens when hydrogen mixes with oxygen? it becomes explosive!!! now put it in a car that a normal person drives, better mileage cleaner and more. Now put a person who wants to do damage somewhere you just gave them a bomb that could take a skyscraper down with something that is not much bigger than a smart car!! it is clean great, it is dangerous when you do not know how to handle it and even worse when you do but want to do something with it. This is one example of many why this is NOT a good idea!!!
