@@alwayslearning7672 it really works believe me.... doubts won't give you anything... you are watching Luka because traditional methods always reach a plateau somewhere in intermediate level... language is art not science... therefore, to be able to become a good artist, you need to copy the good artist 's work... which means, you need to copy the real sentences of native people... just like in example sentences in dictionaries.... and simply read and understand the whole sentences not words in isolation.... you will have amazing communication skills... it really works...👍

Hello Luca before internet. I actually used translation to learn 4 foreign languages ( French, English, Spanish, German) and being native-bilingual speaker (Berber , Arabic ). I came up with almost the same method and used it to master those languages. In fact , i came to the conclusion that the reason why it worked for me was because it was a challenge to my brain and memory to find the equivalent word or sentence in the target language . So it was like training a muscle. Of course in addition i used complete immersion too. And I today I was asking myself if anyone else knows about this. And I was happy to find your channel.

I went through the entire course but I haven't applied the method yet. However, I'm sure it works because it's much more than simply translating. It trains a variety of different skills and it does it in a systematic way. It surely works! Now I'm waiting for the next course, I've got 3 languages at B2 waiting for that! 😉

Hi Luca. Thanks for sharing your wisdom and experience. At first I wasn't convinced, but this method makes a lot of sense. I have a question though: At what stage would you recommend doing this? I think I'm somewhere around B1 now when it comes to reading, writing and listening, but speaking will be a bigger challenge, I think. I haven't done that yet.

A few questions to clear this up when using Assimil: 1. When you get past lesson 50 abd enter the books' active phase, do you simply ignore it or do you go back to the written lesson (aka one for lesson 51) and once again do the translations? If you do go bacm and translate, do you only do NL to TL or both? Doing both for each lesson would double the translations per day so I just wanted to see how you use it. 2. You say you stick with one resource for 3 months before branching out. I love that for really solidifying a high beginner/low intermediate level before branching out more. With Assimil, are you simply repeating the one with Ease book over and over again for those 3 months? Do you move onto the Using series if it exists with Assimil? Thanks for all your tips and resources. I think clarity on how you're using the one resource will help a lot! Thanks Luca!

So having two documents for each language (target and native) is a must, and a fix schedule can help a lot too. Day 1 being the grind (first translation) day 2 grammar or whatever and day 3 second translation (native to target) and then the cicles repeat it self.

I think it is a fantastic idea to organize your thoughts, but I haven't given it a try to learn languages and vocabulary in particular. Hey Luca, what about doing such an activity with a short story? I'm an A2 French learner and am working with Flaubert's "Un couer simple." I really like the story and enjoy working with it to learn French, but I imagine that there are likely a lot of words that aren't particularly relevant for me to know. Is the bidirectional method still good in this case? Or am I wasting time with obscure words? Thank you!!

Thanks for the comment Jason! I'd go for it if 2 points are met: 1. You like the content and find it interest 2. The story is in modern and light language This second point is particularly important for the sake of applying the BDT method correctly. In fact, the goal to translate back and forth is to learn to internalize, memorize and use words, phrases and sentences for meaningful communication. Flaubert is a great writer (I read a couple of his books) but his prose is not really modern. So my humble opinion is that if you want to apply this method to short stories, I would find something else =)

Thank you very much for this video! This method sounds quite feasible, reasonable and balanced! As I see in the picture with the schedule for this method, it has, in particular, the following activities: LR, PA and RW. As I understand, LR is "listen and read", PA is "Phonetical Analysis", RW is "Review". Could you please tell me in a bit more detail? Below are my guesses and thoughts: Listening and reading is more or less clear, but doesn't reading involve translating from L2 to L1 already? Well, this seems to be fine, since there is no oral translation L2 (target language)->L1(native language) in the plan anyway... Also, to which extent does listening and reading include doing the exercises from the unit? I suppose that this includes exercises, but only the shorter ones, for example, one should ignore the exercises like "Write an essay on...", since the writing skill is somehow covered by the translations anyway. Also, one should ignore the exercises like "Construct a dialog on...", since speaking will be developed somehow during the oral part of the translation L1(native language)->L2(target language). And for more speaking one should find a partner on Italki/Tandem anyway... Ok, as for phonetical analysis: I suppose that it is about listening to the pronunciation and maybe trying to read the text in L2(the target language) aloud. But does it have much sense, if one has understood the basic rules of pronunciation? For tone languages, I suppose, still yes. But what about German, in German there are not that much pronunciation tricks? Well, I suppose, listening a bit to the pronunciation and reading aloud should not take much time anyway, so this is fine... As for the review: I don't clearly understand what it means. I suppose, this is simply about doing the same thing as LR once again. But should one really read the text in the target language again during the review, or is it too much for the review? I suppose, yes, because the new words are quite likely to be forgotten anyway... There is another guess: maybe review is something else, some "smart review" to be told more of in the paid BDT course or this smart review is described somewhere on this KZbin channel...

This is a field of IT. You have many units of different difficulty and have to divide them into 9 or more groups. 5 or 6 grades are too few. Especially at beginner's levels.

I picked up assimil because a polyglot friend of mine swears by it and its good so far and it's keeping my attention by giving me info in bite sized chunks that aren't overwhelming. I've heard assimil is only solid for european/romance languages though. i hear it's horrible for asian languages. is there a program out there solid for japanese using this method? I'm doing spanish at the moment but i would love to learn japanese.

I have to try the Bidirectional Translation method. I usually learn by listening and reading a lot, then moving on to more complicated texts and audio and lots of speaking. The problem I see personally with Bidirectional Translation is that working as a translator already, it'll be like doing more work, after having finished work. Which is probably too much work.

Having said that, although ASSIMIL is fantastic, there are other resources you can use to start learning Polish

Definitely. Replacing overly dominant native language with a strong second language is much better. Native language will always remain an enemy to second and third languages.

Comunque sì, per imparare la nostra lingua madre abbiamo usato anche le tabelle dei verbi - a scuola, durante le ore di grammatica. Questa cosa che la propria lingua non si studia ma si apprende solo ascoltandola/usandola è un po’ un mito da sfatare.

Caro Marco, grazie per il commento! La tua è un'osservazione molto interessante. Effettivamente madrelingua adulti ed istruiti (con un curriculum scolastico che comprende per lo meno il liceo) studiano la propria lingua a scuola, ma è un'acquisizione esplicita o "metalinguistica" che avviene e si sovrappone a quella primaria o implicita che avviene negli anni prescolastici. Mi spiego meglio. Fino ai 5-6 anni non abbiamo idea di cosa sia una categoria grammaticale. Sappiamo comunicare e parlare nella nostra lingua madre, usando vocaboli e regole grammaticali in maniera "implicita", ma non abbiamo idea di categorie grammaticali, di cosa sia un gerundio, una proposizione secondaria, un tempo verbale. Nei primi anni della nostra vita, impariamo la lingua nel nostro ambiente familiare, interagendo con genitori e altri bambini. Questa viene definita "conoscenza implicita", ed è la conoscenza primaria di una lingua. Dopodiché a scuola impariamo regole grammaticali, analisi logica etc e raffiniamo le abilità linguistiche attraverso una serie di attività e pratiche "deliberate". Questa viene definita "conoscenza esplicita" (e sto semplificando perché le cose sono più complesse). Ricordo che quando scrissi il mio primo tema in prima media la maestra mi diede un bel "5" perché, beh, la mia capacità lasciava abbastanza a desiderare. Perciò sì, la scuola mi ha aiutato a leggere e scrivere molto meglio, nonché a parlare in maniera più forbita ed elaborata, ma sono abilità costruite sopra un'infrastruttura costruita nei primi anni della mia vita. Questo argomento è interessantissimo e ne dibattono linguisti da decenni. I’ve been using this method - the general idea of which I got from you, Luca - selectively when I want to really focus on a particular dialogue or piece of text.i.e. One doesn’t have to use it with every dialogue in a book, since it does take a certain amount of time. I find the third step, the “translating back into your new language” step, tends to be a rich source of questions. Now you become aware of what you don’t know. Why is this word order used? Or that adjective ending? I also like writing with a word processor in doing this exercise. Word processors are useful for automatic correction of words, since no matter how careful and detailed you are, you will inevitably not notice bits and pieces (accents, letters…), and all of that detail is actually required to actually be able to use that the words in a comprehensible way in the end!

If you're translating from L1 into L2, why would you translate back to L1 if it already exists? I'm confused.

I explain it in the video. You first translate from L2 (target language) into L1 (native language) in writing to make the process much more personal and "emotional", and then back into L2.

This got me excited to use it with LingQ. Could be so effective and fun! I'm used to doing flashcards (with audio) manually like a robot with Anki, and it has been very effective but it gets tedious after 1 year and a half of everyday grind like me. Lol. So I'll try this. Hey Luca! I have been following you for years and I think your simple but effective language learning method is the best out there. I do have one question though. Most of the language learning material out there includes audio where the person is speaking very clearly and at an unnaturally slow speed. When you hear native speakers speak it's almost a completely different language. How do you suggest a learner deal with this?

Get massive comprehensible input (audio + transcript) of podcasts for intermediate learners and after months of listening you will be able to understand the spoken language as it is spoken in real life (in movies for example)
