Annotating is so fun and helpful.. with a classic, my pretentiousness just comes out (I love to convince myself that I’m a genius with in depth thoughts). I find that it also helps me pay more attention to the text and remember more as opposed to when I don’t tab something. I haven’t ventured as far as writing directly in my books (at least with books that aren’t classics), but I’ll get there eventually.

I have ADHD and writing a small summary after each chapter helps me stay in the flow. It gives my eyes a break from just reading, and gives my hands AND brain something to DO. I do it on post-its on the title page of the chapter, and after finishing the book I'll combine all the notes into a bare-bones storyline in a reading journal. I’ve just started annotating and I LOVE it!! During the summer after a pretty terrible school year bec of being pretty much broken and betrayed by what I thought was a real friend I was just so unnecessarily stressed and anxious for no reason at all- I saw lots of people on tik tok showing off their annotated books and I thought it looked fun plus I used to love reading and really needed a distraction from the mental state I was in , and I didn’t know how to start at all. I watched loads of videos and yours finally gave me the starting points I needed, and I started annotating a book I’ve read before which btw turned out to be such a helpful thing to do- when u start annotating u focus so much on the actual annotating bec u don’t know how to do it than the actual story so if u annotate a story u already know what happens it gives u the time to actually focus on HOW to annotate or else u don’t normally understand the story as quickly bec ur not focusing on it as much, after annotating a book I’ve already read I pretty much got the “way” I guess of how I want to do it and then I began annotating new books no regrets at all and I feel so happy doing it too which was the main goal 💕

I love seeing how ppl annotate their books, that’s partly what motivated me to start doing it too! If anyone’s worried about starting to annotate, I would recommend using a pencil. That’s what I do (I started writing in my books pretty recently, i tried using tabs at first but i didn’t vibe with it) and i keep erasing and rewriting my notes so it’s great for me :) plus if worst comes to worst you can erase all your notes (carefully, it can rip pages and if the book’s ink is not very good it can fade under your eraser) to resell the book. You can probably do this with colored pencils but they tend not to get erased as easily. I also use post-it sometimes for longer thoughts if it doesn’t fit on the page. Since i tend not to use tabs, or color code, i put a cross in the margin next to the most important quotes so i can see them more easily when flipping through the book + i more often than not write little comments so i can remember why i underlined that part ^^

This also let me realize that annotating is for yourself. And that I want it to be for myself, but I'm scared that I will still write things that I think other people will relate to, even though I don't. Anyway thank you so much! :)

I always annotate on my second read! I absolutely love annotating but it somewhat takes me out of the story when I’m reading it for the first time, so if I really enjoy the book, I read it again and annotate then. It helps me understand the story so much better and it also means that only my favorite books are annotated, which I feel is really special!

Totally love your comment!! I have not annotated my fiction books because I am anxious to get the book read and don’t want to stop to make notes or underline. I just enjoy the flow of the read. I am thinking when and if I reread a book I really enjoyed and that had many gems that I remember I am considering annotating then.

the highlighters that don't bleed through the pages EVEN in the books with suuuper thin pages are the pilot frixion erasable highlighters. they come in 6 colors and they are soooo convenient because you can erase them!! i use them for annotating my books and they never did me wrong

Love your video and it gave me more confidence in annotating my books. I just started annotating and I'm afraid if I don't like the book I can't unhaul it, really like reading at least 100 pages, tabbing and writing on sticky notes, great idea! I also like your meaning of each tab color.

@@throneofpages I'm annotating my first book. I'm tabbing, underlining and writing notes directly in the book I'm reading, I love it! It's true for me and as mentioned in your video, it really does personalize the book, and how I was feeling during certain scenes. It's great. My method is quickly tabbing first and when I'm done reading I go back and underline and make notes, found this works so well for me, and relaxing at the same time.

that's amazing because not only you put yourself through the book but also you mull over through it and make your experience so beautiful however i personally find it kind of difficult cause it need lots of work and attention,i don't regularly annotate my books in the specific way you do but i try underline the impressive parts and sometimes write my thoughts on it wich sometimes feel good on the other side i get worried about the probability that someone read my book and finds my thoughts pointsless or ridiculous 😅😅anyway what you do is admirable you should keep going this way excellent 👏👏

thank you so much!! for me annotating is a very personal experience and since they're my books i don't really think about what others would think if they read my annotations, after all i'm not trying to impress anyone just annotate my books :)

i LOVE annotating books, especially classics!! i personally don't have a set method to annotating, i just annotate what feels right with the book. for instance, a book may be more character-driven, so i take note of the characterization (personality traits, how the mc interacts and evolves, etc.), while another book may be rich with themes. i would love to use highlighters, tabs, and colored pens but i'm so inconsistent and often lose commitment lol, that i need to use few materials as possible so i only use black gel ink pens to underline, circle, and scribble notes on the margins.

I have these same tabs. I started tabbing away because of you lol. I also realized before seeing your other video I won't annotate in the beginning either because I need to know for sure I will love or like the book enough to keep it. My first book I started at chapter 12. After I am finish I will go back and annotate. I also tab pages I need to go back if I don't care to write. I love it.

I’ve started to highlight and annotate my book I’m reading currently recently. I like your tabs idea and might adopt that since I do want to donate books in the future that get below a 4 star from me and that may be the best way to do things so that I don’t write all over my books 😅

I bought the first book I ever purchased and I was quite nervous at first, but as I kept going through the book, I found it enjoyable. And I realized I understand the book better when I annotate. I couldn't even believe I just finished two chapters in one day.
