It's really the patience for me. 10+ years ago I had the most patience in the world and was traditional in my workflow on paper/light table and time spent on pre-production and it showed. Over time, as KZbin/having a schedule became a thing I started cutting steps out of my process and simplifying and simplifying and just stopped being patient. This is a good reminder of how get back to how I USED TO animate.

for me animation itself is a big thing that i want to learn. this is a really nice overview of your workflow! i always did little animations on and off (nothing even remotely large) but i feel animation is such an amazing form of art. in drawings generally you can portrait a reality that is more vibrant or clearer or realer or more beautiful. and in animation you can reduce things to the most effective and clear movement, while adding emotions and movements that communicate character so well. i will definitely try this approach! thank you. adding, your animations are wonderful. its hard to put it into words, its like ice skating really wildly but always catching the curves and sticking the landing. so full of movement but always controlled to the point where it still feels very readable.

The planning stage is always the worst step for me it's like "I can see every single frame in my head already and if ii put more information in my head will explode with possibilities" I gotta focus on the "best" shmoves for the model. I will be rewatching each of these as i continue to improve my animation.

Thank you for bringing this up! I was trained as an animator. But it so happened that I (and the whole class) did not finish my studies. Our mentor animator quit due to health problems and no worthy replacement was ever found. And now I have many fears. Every time on new projects, they tell me that I don't know something and I'm doing it wrong. But at the same time they do not suggest anything. As a result, I make the same mistakes again. And my fear of being wrong and doing wrong is getting stronger ...

i wasnt really doing anything all that complex, but now i want to. This isnt just helpful for approaching something that you arent confident in, it's also good for people who lose motivation for animation as a whole. I have *hella* adhd, so I can get bored very fast with animation. Ive taken many measures to speed up animating, and this will make that process a LOT easier

When I make animations, I make a draft and call it a day. I could probably get a lot better results if i polished over my drafts
@pencilmonk3 жыл бұрын
This is very insightful, I have been practicing the film gesture studies and my draft manship and confidence improved drastically. However making studies from reference is usually too much of a trial and error for me, I would really appreciate it if you can share how you make timing and movement studies from reference.

Animation is hard regardless of skill level. Milt Kahl said in an interview once when asked if animation came easy to him and he sounded off with a resounding no. "I never said it would be easy, I only said it would be worth it."

First I start doing the animatic (rough animation) with pretty much clean lines, then I in-between it, then I do the line art, color it, and adding shaders, then I don't always do it but, I add sound effects to it (FX), and that's it! Even for complicated scenes, In my animatic phase, I figure out the prespective and the background and everything that has to do with prespective, then how I said above, I do the inbetweens and etc.

What is the difference between your tie-down and clean up phase? I mean, I am guessing that your clean up is focused on line quality, so what are you focusing on during the tie-down phase?
@TonikoPantoja3 жыл бұрын
The solid drawing and detail aspect of it. My first short hand pass was just meant for getting the performance and motion down. My tie down pass which is still considered rough is just there to make the drawings more on model. I'm not sure if I explained this properly in the video, but I always try to define it in every video I do where I talk about the tiedown stage.
@ari_isdrawing42933 жыл бұрын
@@TonikoPantoja Ahh, that makes sense! I need to go back and rewatch some of your videos for a refresher. I watched a bunch of your videos a while back (love the animation shorthand video) and got inspired to learn animation but decided I needed to improve my fundamental drawing skills first! Hey I was hoping you have any tips for animating in this whole, situation- I struggle with doing pose to pose and then filling it- I'm so much use to straight ahead animation and going with the flow, sure it looks well done but then I don't get the same result I was thinking of or if there is a mistake I'll have to fix a handful. But with PtP I struggle with timing and it feels stiff to get that arc sort of movement I want. Any tips on which one I should use and habits to try and curve these little nit picks?

It would be normal since you're still getting the rough/tiedown look at the end of the day (which then can be prepped for cleanup). unless you're thinking of a really specific scenario of the work flow.
