Buses used to reverse around a corner in the days of conductors. They had to so as to be able to return to town.The conductor guided them. Some routes, however, had a turning circle (especially trolleybuses!) which made it much easier.

Hi again, I am very entertained by your videos. As I have mentioned elsewhere on your videos, I drove in London from 83 to 04. Then came to Canada and have driven in various city bus systems and now I am at a city in the Province of Alberta, Canada. I joined LT in 83 trained on an old BEAirways RMC and went on the old Chiswick Bus Works skid-pan! Here in Canada recruitment is a long process, with 3 or 4 visits of doing assessments, tests, panel interview and finally a medical. The driving exam has one big difference...you have to learn the mechanics of how air brakes work and how to adjust them manually (like a mechanic would, crawling under the bus with a wrench (spanner) in ya hand! Also pre-trip air brake testing (causing parking brake to apply if air is lost). Proving that air loss will apply the brakes. The irony is that modern buses have automatic brake adjusting so actually, we would never have to crawl under a bus and of course here if you cannot build up ya air...well ya cannot move off...so no danger there either!

Very similar to how London operators recruit drivers. There's a video series on my channel following a few recruits through the process with Arriva. From memory there is the Initial application, driving assessment in a van, interview, medical, theory test (highway code and x2 CPC), practical driving test & practical CPC test after 10-30 hours driving instruction. There is also periodical training to keep the CPC entitlement which is 7 hours a year (35 hours over 5 years). There are also "Mystery Shoppers" or Driver Quality Monitors who are plain clothes who inspect driving standards of every driver in London, you get a report after they've been on your bus and if it's not up to par they may send you for "refresher" training - mainly for one handed steering or not putting handbrake on when stationary. I loved my time on the job, my colleagues were great, most of the travelling public were cordial and polite and some weeks the pay was great (usually during the summer when there was LOADS of overtime going!)

After 30 years working on the bus engineering side. We were all required to take our PSV test. Now retired, it is interesting how many drivers cross their hands when turning, fail to keep thumb on top of the wheel. in case the wheel snatched and broke your thumb and finally taking the test in a half cab Leyland PD1 with no power steering and crash box on first and second; Double declutch being the order of the day. For real fun driving a Daimler pre selector. The pedal to the left was not the clutch but the gear change. Fail to align engine speed with road speed and the pedal missed the change and took the back of your leg out.Oh and no cab heaters; they came later.....

Hi Anton, was your training done at the time Huddersfield was using those awful B10Ms brought up from Sheffield and being flogged around a Golcar 301? I think the idea was to teach drivers how to get round a tight blind corner under the viaduct. Cheers, fascinating video.

'Uddersfield !!! l always remember nearly getting nearly getting stuck under a low railway bridge in 'Uddersfield !! Just managed to get underneath by keeping it to the centre of the arch ! Then l remember a taxi driver complaining because he came flying around the corner too fast !! Then l pointed out to him the signs saying " Warning oncoming vehicles may be in the centre of the road !!" All l remember it was going up hill and by-passed the town centre coming out the otherside of it by going down hill again !!

Hi Anton, driving aside, as you obviously had no issues with that. It’s your attitude, your very well presented, you have a great way about you, it’s what you need when dealing with people and above all you enjoy your job. I like this video it’s very helpful. Like you I passed my car driving test first time, many moons ago . I think a man walked in front with a red flag. I took my PCV lessons independently, paying for them myself. Like you I failed my first test, I know what’s right and wrong and feel the examiner had a bad day what he failed me for. In discussion mode I told the examiner that I I think he made a mistake he failed me on one serious, it was, I didn’t make progress coming out onto the M25 at Junction 25 for what it matters. There was a tipper lorry coming down the inside lane as I was joining the motorway I decided to let him go so I just slowed down so I could get into the flow of the traffic and that’s why I failed with a serious, I only had three minors up to then. I said to him, if you get me next week I do the same again. How dumb was that? He said I could appeal, I said no point I took my test a week or so later with the same examiner and passed. I think I could have driven like mad max and passed. He was a nice bloke though.

Hey am really showing my age now ,test passed 1985,in a Bristol Lodekka,half cab double decker,crash gearbox(manual) & no power steering,spent my early part of my driving career driving ex London RMs around Glasgow,the best bus ever built,I'd have them back tomorrow

thanks dave....i never got to drive an RM....but managed leyland atlanteans and olympians... 1985.....thats when privatisation came in....you would have witnessed a big change in 1985.... i bet its cold up in glasgow!
@608dave17 жыл бұрын
The RMs lasted up there from 86 to 89/90,they were well received by the public,most drivers loved them too,they did have to modify the heating though.There were 3 companies that had them,Clydeside Scottish,Kelvin Scottish & a mob called Magicbus,which was stagecoach in another name in the early days,their founder Brian Souter used to be seen driving them regularly.When they were put into service they still had the original bare light bulb interior lights,typical Glasgow though,they had to put grills over the light bulbs as they were being nicked!!!

Hello how much money can i earn as bus driver thank you
@DoubleDeckerAnton5 жыл бұрын
...hi Vasile...depends on if you work in say London or in a big town out in the country...!!! London pays more than anywhere else but the standard of living is more expensive! Drivers earn around 500 to 600 pounds a week...plus overtime is available of you can get it!
@vasileioancrisan81905 жыл бұрын
