I’ve bought fluorites from Jordan before, and his minerals are truly spectacular. However, the best thing about Jordan aren’t his minerals, but rather his uplifting attitude and wholesome approach to life. Consider yourself lucky if you get to know him.

I started collecting when I was just 12 years old. ( I'm now 60!) I had a visit to the 'Florence mine' ( now closed) in Cumbria, UK where they mined large quantities of red boytroidal Hematite. While there I visited the samples shed. OMG it was like going into an Alladins cave of massive red boytriodal hematite (the size of wheel barrows!), perfectly formed large clusters of crystalline Dolomite and Quartz and beautiful black Specularite. As a young kid it was mind blowing, I'd never seen anything like it before. Luckily for me I was given some specimens to take away, which I still have to this day, including a beautiful piece of boytroidal hematite, with a dusting of black crystalline Specularite on its surface, just like black icing sugar. This experience set me on a path to a life long journey of mineral collecting from all over the world. It also set me on a path to train as a Geologist, although sadly my working career went in another direction.

haha nice one mate. im a cumbrian too. for those non biritish people who live outside of the UK, cumbria is a county in the north west of england and its the fartherst county in the north west you can go before you get to scotland and it is below Lancashire which below is Greater manchester, then its merseyside i think and then its like cheshire. i have 0 knowledge of gemstones what so ever but it sounds like you've had luck. im more into the numismatic side of collecting (i collect coins and bullion and banknotes) so yeah.

I would love to see you bring Jordan back for a part 2, and 3 & 4. The other thing I found interesting was how much Jordan looks like his favorite specimens. His style is very "Goth" & so are his specimens, especially the 1st two.

I do know Pyrites from Spain and Peru are stable, but are pyrites from Elba as well? The only thing that is keeping me from collecting more pyrites is my fear of pyrite disease/pyrite decomposition. I would really want to have some Elba pieces but I don't want them to break apart on me and maybe even affect my other sulphate minerals
@brentonmah3258
@brentonmah3258 2 жыл бұрын
Stability is more dependent on the pyrite’s storage environment and has little to do with where it was originally found. However, as a generality, smaller crystals and aggregates of countless tiny crystals can destabilize more quickly.
@naturalselectioncrystals712
@naturalselectioncrystals712 2 жыл бұрын
Brenton is right! I use silica packets to insure that the humidity level stays low enough. Keep in mind, that Pyrite has been in Georgia for multiple years and it is totally fine. A little care goes a long way.

Wow he is so on point,he is exactly right when he says these things and up in the trash,usually due to death,an lack of knowledge or understanding,and of coarse interest.. My adult daughter and I were walking one evening only two homes up where yes a neighbor had died. It was to be rented out by a son in law,whom had hired a crew to clean out the house where a well traveled elderly lady had passed away ....I had only said hello a few times as her and her sister would walk down the road to visit other neighbors. I never knew how fascinating these sisters may have been,I only learned after they died.. The one sister had owned the home with her husband and they had one adult daughter,all I knew is the other sister had come from somewhere to stay with the other..i didn't know their dad was a Congress man back in the day,from Ohio which this is Ohio...It turns out the sister whom came here was a lady interested in rocks minerals ECT. Their dad had to travel all over the u.s. back in the day... Moving ahead they all passed away. I found on the ground that evening somthing shiny and told my daughter this is quartz,double terminated and brown gold was one with the other being clear...I told my daughter get the box for me,after a few oh mom,she did....the things I found were amazing,but to make this story shorter I will tell you she was a professor and tryed getting her sisters daughter into minerals yrs ago when the niece was a kid.....i have something from this find that first I believed was a golf ball,somehow painted to turn colors as you turn it,it's not a golf ball,and it's not painted...no one could paint something to do what this rock does... Ty I love your site...

@naturalselectioncrystals712
@naturalselectioncrystals712 2 жыл бұрын
Brenton and Tristan are right, fluorite is an excellent starting mineral for anyone because of the aesthetic diversity it provides. I will say that it is good to expose yourself to minerals a few times before you spend any amount of money that you'd label as "significant" for your budget. Many people begin collecting and buy the decor specimens offered by most dealers, often being massive Brazilian amethyst geodes (which is my least favorite locale for amethyst for ecological reasons) and African Malachite. When your familiarity grooves form in the brain and your ability to process what you are seeing expands, you'll quickly learn what truly inspires you in minerals. C.C. (my fiance and business partner) collects sulphides for instance, which are often metallic or black minerals of various types. Certainly not your traditional "aesthetic mineral", but they're truly beautiful and unique, just like your tastes will be.
@-.Tristan.-
@-.Tristan.- 2 жыл бұрын
@@naturalselectioncrystals712 Excellent explanation for perception of beauty in a mineral as well as how to start off! Laura, not everyone’s mineral taste is going to be the same, and you should find something that embodies what you truly love and that captivates you. You know that you have found the right one when you can’t look away lol. For instance: Sulfide minerals have a special look to them that are just really visually appealing to some, but that may not be what other people are into! So its great to just adventure and see what you really like! Personally I truly love most of the minerals that grow along with zinc, which include Sphalerite, Calcite, and Fluorite! Titanite has also became a favorite over the past few months.

Here's the thing about collecting, it relies on three factors: space, funding, and passion. You must have a reasonable space to not only store, but to display your collection. A collection that cannot be enjoyed can hardly be called a collection, but is instead a hoard. You must have adequate discretionary income to afford your collection, as collecting to the detriment of your finances places you into a position to where you can no longer enjoy your collection with the same peace of mind. And finally passion. You must enjoy the things that you collect to the extent that you do not tire of them even after having them for years. If you reach a point at which a certain feature piece of your collection no longer holds your attention and you no longer find yourself interested in it, then you're better off selling it to someone else so that they can have the opportunity to enjoy it in your stead. We are all merely caretakers for these pieces and will pass them on in time, so it isn't right to think of something like mineral samples as being intrinsically yours and tying yourself to it psychologically so that you can't part with it, even if you no longer have passion for that piece. Instead, you should think of it as an opportunity to replace it with a new piece that does interest you. As someone with tendencies toward collecting things, I've got to constantly examine what part of my psychology is causing that urge in order to stave it off, since I lack the first two factors of space and funding to form meaningfully large collections of things.

Okay, but how do you start finding crystals and things to sell? I know you have to look into specific locations, but can you do that for free (or the cost of traveling there depending on how far it is)? I have one place where I find some really cool rocks, but no crystals, the closest I get is quartz rocks, which are pretty easy to identify, so have TINY bits of pyrite inclusions which is pretty cool. But how precious is a quartz rock? I'm honestly having a lot of fun with the rocks I can find, they are SO COOL, and I want to try an identify them. I am also dabbling in jewelry making and carving them. But it would be fun to be able to add in precious stones to what I'm doing so I can start selling things, cause money is tight and what I can do is limited.

That’s such a loaded question, and there’s countless ways of doing it. You’re right that travel costs are but one of many components to the overall overhead costs of selling minerals and crystals...there are a lot of factors that buyers tend not to think about, but those factors do explain why some minerals can cost a lot of money. I’d say start by trying to understand where various mineral deposits are found. Crystals don’t grow randomly; they occur under specific geochemical and environmental conditions. Once you got that down, then it’s a matter of finding spots that aren’t on private property. So I think to help out with that aspect, it’s good to join a local rock and mineral club that can set up field trips. Networking with rockhounders is also ideal; perhaps they have their own private claims. For myself, I live very far away from anywhere that’d be a suitable environment to finding collectable crystals; that’s just how the geology is where I am. So start with knowing how minerals form and where to find them, then expect to travel a lot. note: Because there are a lot of overhead costs involved, most people do not profit comfortably by selling only minerals. Most people that sell self-collected minerals do so because they’re passionate about it. Don’t do it just for the money.
