@@howardalien2720 I really enjoyed it, but I felt like I was trading my physical health for money after doing it a while. I had thoughts about wanting to do some sort of education consulting, and after your video, I realized that the "vertical" part of my T is learning theory and teaching/coaching. I've taught a lot of this info to my best friend who's a personal trainer, and it's helped him a ton, so we're working on a learning theory seminar for personal trainers, and thanks to this video, I'm now also applying to education consultant jobs. We've been working on the seminar for a while now, but this video helped me realize that I need to jump head first into it, which is actually what made me start applying to those jobs. I relate to this so hard... I always loved math and science as a kid and participated in model rocket building, robotics, science fairs, and spelling bees. I later became interested in abnormal psychology when I began struggling with mental health issues, and also in anthropology when I took a class in community college and was hooked. I later rekindled my interest in robotics/CS/engineering, as well as starting work in the autism/IDD field (I am on the spectrum myself). Now I am pursuing a degree in Psychology with a goal of working in the autism/IDD field, but I want to go back to college for engineering/robotics at some point just to learn more about it and maybe change my career. In the meantime, I'm learning all I can about psychology, while participating in CS, rocketry, and other engineering clubs on the side.

I love to see another person whose main interests are tech and psychology. Those were my career choices as well (in addition to veterinary medicine) but since it's very hard to get into psychology here in Finland I went for engineering and I haven't regretted it! I love software engineering, it seems to fit my brain and personality well, but sometimes I get this urge to try other things. I want to do everything but that's not possible lol. 🙇🏼‍♀️

@@kitcat2449 I actually was also incredibly interested in veterinary medicine/biology as a little kid, but my other interests and the fact that my desire to become a veterinarian was just based off the fact that I loved my cats, but I wasn't actually good with animals in general, took precedence. I probably wouldn't have made it into vet school either, that shit is hard and competitive. I mean don't get me wrong, psychology and engineering (especially grad school) are hard too just because they're so popular that they're capped majors that are hard to get into, but vet school is harder to get into than med school, and is more academically rigorous as you have to study every animal's anatomy and physiology instead of just humans'.

This is great advice! I remember in fifth grade we learned the term "jack of all trades", which at the time I was told was someone who was good at a lot of things, but not the best at any of them. I thought it described me perfectly. When I'm not learning something new or working on a skill, I feel so lost sometimes. Someday I'll find a way to tie all or most of my interests together...

As a 17 year old who's particularly good at Biology but still wanting to have a job with a lot more freedom than just medicine because I'm a creative who can sing and likes to write or some sort of something as an active hobby (I'm a high school graduate and I was supposed to actually go to college last year but I repeated my senior year because I didn't know what to do) I have no idea what to do with my future. Maybe you should go with biology and writing/ speaking/ communication so you can do stage talks about medicine or be a professor , do Ted talks write books about all of that and so on Or a different path is studying biology with business/ marketing/management so you can do a make-up or skip care brand/company Keep music as a hobby, learn more about music in your free time, and find a local band in college. If things work out, it could change everything, I don't know if any of this helps, but maybe you'll find something better. I hope everything works out. I am actually also going through this at the moment, trying to figure out everything is really hard (Sorry about my English, not my main language 😅)

This is the advice I’d give. Don’t worry about the specifics of the job until you know what kids of lifestyle you want. If you want to have lots of time off, you can’t do things like software where you have to be working all the time. If you want have a lot of money, you probably won’t be doing passion work (which unless you’re superhuman, don’t pay well), and won’t get a lot of time off.

I’m 21 that started this year. Here’s a tip, truth is at 18 years old you have not experienced much fields in anything, take long as you can to figure out what interests you and makes money/ employable. There has to be a balance between those, once you do figure it out then enrol in university. I shit you not, I realized I was gaslighting myself into computer science almost enrolled in it, then changed to nursing. And comp sci is hella over saturated, and AI able to take 10-13% of jobs. anyway so I think I made the right choice.

This solved the problem of my indecisiveness. I am looking for new jobs and was so lost. I was already experienced at graphic design, but doubted myself. Thought, I need to learn coding, I need to learn data analysis, I need to learn SEO and marketing, I need to learn software engineering, blah blah blah, all this crap piling up in my head and a giant wave of feeling overwhelmed. Now I know, I need to just stick with design. I enjoy it, I have experience in it, it's still necessary (AI can't replace us, designing has too much nuance to it that AI can't replace), so yeah.....I can make it happen. This was helpful, thank you. I will now become a "T".

I very much appreciate this video, thank you for making it. Once you land a job, try to incorporate your horizontal in your everyday work tasks. Keep an eye out for job listings that line up with your outside interests, and make moves in that direction as time progresses. Advice we get from influencers is advice that comes from the lucky few who land jobs, so their advice might be biased in a way that doesnt help the strugglers out there. Good luck to you!

I love this discussion! I had a previous manager that was upset with me not picking a path to specialize in data. I could do everything from architecture, roadmap development, deployment and testing. I enjoyed the business and technical side. At one point, I believed that creative technology was my path, however I don't have just one path in data. I love acting, film making, story telling, writing. I used to want to be an engineer so I own a 3-D printer because I like building. I feel like I peaked in my career and now my main focus is making an impact on the lives of younger generations. Hopefully spread data awareness. I enjoy having multiple hobbies and interests.

I studied a bachelor in computer science but deep down I'm an artist and creative person, I keep thinking that I won't be the best person in the field of CS but I might do better in the creative field and could see myself working as an art director, although I keep second-guessing myself due to the high competition in that field. Do you advise that I follow the creative path or work in a field that combines both tech and art, or just work in tech and keep art as a hobby? my mum has worked so many different jobs in completely different fields - she's currently working as a research manager in the nhs despite not even having a gcse in biology. Most likely ur not gonna work the same job for the rest of your life and thats okay. Life goes on and on and on so do what you need to in the moment rather than worry about the knock on effect 20 or 30 years from now

Picking a career is hard. It turns out a career is a journey, not a destination. Wish I had been exposed to the content of this video a decade ago. I majored in Atmospheric Science, and Computer Science with many side interests. It's interesting to see how career paths for Data Science, ML, and AI are all multidisciplinary in nature, and they didn't exist as specific educational paths at institutions a decade, or two ago.

Thank you for sharing these brilliant ideas with us. It really comes down to the similar thing that I thought which is that you will never find a 'perfect' field for you. You really need to choose something from array of topics that you are interest in and have some fun doing, so you can support yourself (preferably higher paid and not as time consuming as becoming a doctor in my opinion. That way you will have an easier and faster start) At the same time combine it with your other interests, skills and over time create a unique skillset which means its wayy harder to replace you. (means more money :D) And this is probably the way how you create a 'perfect' career that you enjoy cuz its based on your interests and not other people interests. Its similar idea that Robert Green said in one of his videos.

I am grateful I have been recommended this video! I am not from America but since i was 17 I wanted to become a First responder (firefighter or paramedic) so I enlisted as a volunteer, now I am 18 years old and after this year of experience as a volunteer i want to say that even though i still love everything about what I do i am thinking of taking up a different branch of work, so that theres a backup plan in case im not able to succeed in the fire academy. I love spending time outdoors and in nature so im probably gonna do some research on what collages work in environmental protection or any other types of work like this. tysm for awesome video and great channel!

I don’t know if I want to do a physics phd, data science or finance all radically different. You’re not far off, I’ve spoken to people that move between those kind of roles as long as you keep learning it’s in the same ball park

Im on a similar path and doing most of them, one after another, adding a roster of qualifications, all at the same firm. My firm are pretty happy with this, if I remain in a junior salary band. They are paying for all the qualifications and training which has cost 10’s of thousands. Tried Data Analyst, Data Scientist, Data Engineer, Dev Ops engineer (Very sysadminny) roles so far. Would like to try Solution Architect next. Then going to pick one to create the “I”, can’t remain a junior for ever! Although my colleagues who went “I” shaped quickly are earning much more than I am, I see it as an investment in my future, as I think this breadth will be useful at director levels. I also find it pretty damn interesting, which for me is the most important thing.

@@NormanWasHere452 I don't know what to do either, for me it's between Physics, Philosophy, Statistics, Economics, Accounting or Finance. I suppose we have to compromise and pick which one fits into the intersection of the Venn Diagram if A=money & B=Enjoyment, that's what I'd recommend you to do. I'll probably end up picking finance or something 😂. You also have to factor in wether or not you need a PHD, (masters are usually better anyways) However by far the most important consideration is the working environment, you may love the subject but do you love the job?

Hii, im also an 18 y/o going through this(ngl this has been going on for years), tho my circumstances are a little different since i live in a third world country without the money to get an education in english speaking countries, so i have to major in something that would pave the way for immigrating to such countries in higher degrees. And there's also the fact that i'm interested in both arts and desing and computer science and ngl getting a job in the ladder(even if it is the safer and more paying option) is not what i'll do in an ideal world but the former is too risky for someone like me so maybe i'll switch careers when things are a little stable or find a way to mix both. Anyways after watching this and that other video you made about how we're probably gonna choose the wrong career and if we're interested in different things it's better to choose the high paying job and pursue the other alongside helped giving my thoughts some clearance. I still have so many doubts but i really hope things would turn out the best. (Oh and a little note, ugh i'm sorry if this is rude and i can't talk for everyone but i unfortunately can't find reassurance in hearing examples of people like elon musk who had so many privileges from birth, and maybe you can talk about people that weren't so privileged?😭💘 )

I'm that person who have so many passions from media to economics, from psychology to neuroscience, sociology, fashion and what not? I chose business administration degree because it is so broad and have so many things to study, it has given me a lot of knowledge and now i'm going to major in marketing which is basically all about psychology, media and economics! And I can work in fashion with Marketing degree... so its a win-win situation.

It’s so hard to choose a career nowadays, there are so many aspects to see, like will your job be taken by AI?

Human motivations and speeches are fleeting, Physical realities are not. Look to the detailed physical needs of humans, downright to quantifying specific elements or components, and current markets for one of these. Example: how many and where are (N) being produced, at what costs, comparative to whom ? It could be anything from tap water, to video games, to youtube videos, to silicate shieldings (I'm making up a word, I have no clue), to steel grades and iron ores. And it can get niche, because for instance: not all coal is the same.

For all the younger workers with a degree that maybe watching this, If you're in the US and not sure what you want to do, I would consider finding a career with the federal government. There's plenty of different fields to get into. Having a college degree can get you started at higher grades. It might not pay as well as private sector but I'm sure it offers a work/life balance that would be hard for the private sector to match. I've been with the feds since 2018, I've never been denied a vacation request. Looking at my LES, I have 182 hours of annual leave and 440 hours of sick leave as I write this. You get TSP (401k) and pension.

I hear you, and I’ve considered it. However, I’d like to ask your opinion on something, if you don’t mind, and I know it’s weird to talk on youtube like this as commenters to a video. I have heard that federal government jobs may not open up as quick or may be not as much as private sector, since private sectors either promotes quicker and have more job hoppers (also may have more people resigning), while with public sector, many people tend to stay longer in their positions, which makes it less likely to become open for a nee comer, or someone may be looking into advance in their career. I've heard some agencies like the SSA have a high turnover rate, though I'd probably avoid those agencies. Lol. I'd say there are ample opportunities for advancement if you are willing to move since there are opportunities all over the world.

@@dawn2508 yes. There definitely are skilledtrades jobs. Just go to the federal government's job hiring site and search. www.usajobs.gov. The HR people I've talked to have told me they prefer applicants use the resume building tool and you want to be as detailed as possible.

Thank you for sharing your insights on being a T-shaped person. I agree with it. The vertical part takes time, daily grind to build, but it is the fundamental skills and foundation of your career. If you are very good at coding for example, you will normally not end up just being a software engineer.

This video is an amazing explanation to the “T person”, because I also want to do something with my artistic talents :). It’s always good to be aware of as well that every job has its own “shit sandwich” which means that it has its parts that really suck. This also makes you question if you’re determined enough to overcome that part of your career. For example I want to be a nurse practitioner, but I also know that to do so I’ll have to see a bunch of horrific or sad situations. Im determined enough though to fight those battles for my career.

I’m 17 and my education is currently focused on animal-care and such, I chose it because I like animals, but it seems the further I look into jobs available with this education, the more lost I feel, like is this really what I want to do? Presenting ChatGPT as a source is confusing to me. I appreciate the addition of expert sources, but putting ChatGPT on the same level as humans who have a nuanced understanding of the topic at hand feels sketchy. Love the video and your work generally, but I’ve noticed this is becoming more common practice and I want to point it out when I see it.

One way of viewing how ChatGPT as presented here is it's a summary of google searches. The context works here as a way of providing a summary without taking much video time, which would distract from the core topic. I'd expect more time and research effort was expended to verify the response, and to refine the prompt(s) entered to get result shown for the video. Good content creation is often not a single take at recording video. The final video is a subset of larger content that has been refined and edited. I wouldn't consider ChatGPT as the expert source, rather I'd expect the presenter to have verified the material being presented. It's the presenters reputation that is on the line. We as humans (particularly in a professional role) can't blame ChatGPT for being wrong, or take credit when it's right. ChatGPT is just a tool.

I really love the idea of a T shaped person! Actually, I've just turned 24 a few days ago, and I was wondering why I decided to be a skin therapist while I studied English at university! I was so ashamed and thought that it was mostly about money! But here I am, watching your video all of a sudden, realizing that it all was meant to be! So, to me, studying English was the vertical part of the T and skin care would be on the surface! The choice of becoming T shaped person poses a significant challenge for me when trying to decide the breadth of what I want to learn. Can it be something as abstract as coding and problem solving? I am also interested in deep computer theory. But mostly we are told to first come up with an idea of where you want to specialize in tech: infosec, AI, frontend or backend, mobile. Shouldn't the advice be about mastering one or two common languages and understanding the technological world before building something in it? And we all know that the common advice is actually totally opposite. In short, I am still confused 😅

Im shocked after watching this!! So I've just graduated highschool and I want to be a Psychiatrist which usually takes 5.5 yrs of MBBS and 3.5 yrs of post graduation in India. But I have a lot of other intrests that I can never give up on like writing, public speaking and addressing an audience. I asked my brother to gift me a typewriter fo rmy birthday and he told me how I should just focus on studying for my medical entrance exam (basically he said, I should just focus on one field in life and that's it) which is not a bad advice at all but it's not something i resonate with. I always thought that I'll become a psychiatrist but that doesn't mean i will stop writing. This hobby will always be with me. So I've planned that in the future besides having a career in medicine, I can be an author and can also have a social media presence like baing a KZbinr because I love addressing audiences. You don't have to compromise on your dreams. If you can make one of your dream come to reality, you can make others the same as well. Just make sure that you're passionate enough for all of them.

I chose running start to do college in high-school but now I’ve learned I dislike most stem based classes (my original focus) and I basically wasted my junior/senior years of hs. So now I’m stuck between reverting to my middle school self and picking art class or…calculus 3 and more physics 🎀✨

We in Iraq, when we become fifteen years old, choose literary or scientific literature, which is geography and history, and memorization subjects are subjects that we study for three years in middle school, after which the choice of colleges is determined according to For us, such as education, law, and business administration. As for the scientific ones, they study physics, chemistry, and biology for three years, after which their choice of college is broad, such as medicine and other things. This is the education law in Iraq.. I chose the literary one because I am bad at mathematics, and in my thinking I want to become an English teacher. I do not know if that is my choice. This video has been useful to me, I'm peruvian and from the northen lima (poor side of the capital city) and for a change I was born with mild asperger's syndrome and a tendency to anxiety(The ansiexyty is why I also have ODC) . All my live, Since I was a child I was curious about all the topics, technology, sciencie, arqueology, literature, history, media, and nature. In the elementary school I was pretty featured in all topics, in maths, comunication, lenguage and arts. As a tennager I had different seasons in one my interest change xd, for a while I was very interested in literature, I used to say I wanna be the next peruvian nobel price. Then I become interested in the Hip Hop and rap and rapping around the hood and as a hobby. Next I was working as scriptwiriter for a youtube channel, and I enjoyed it, I readed a lot literature, philosofy, and then I overcome my rejection foward maths (This was fault of a bad experiencie in the HS), and I was all that summer studying maths by myself and I enjoyed learn and solve the maths problems. I had many projects such as Write a script to a Comic (I write almost 10 chapters, but I stopped because I think it will become real, so it won't be interest to people). I was going to make a rap almbum. I had already most of the lyrics but personal problems make me set aside the proect, I was preparing for study Biology at a university in my City, but then I realize that I wanted study biology to understand the living beings and then apply it to understand the human society because by a heavy experience that I had in the Ghetho and things that I seen I want to make a change in the society where I lives and make the situation better. I thought in being Sociologist or Antropolist, but there aren't laboral oportunities to it, and we went to a phsycologist to make a vocacional test and my recommended areas were: Comunicacion and journalism, Basic Science, and Social Science. I don't like to focused in only one topic, the world and universe is so big and I want to know all what I can about it, that's, I have ODC, and strange hability that let me see differents ways to use an information (Too hard ways or bizarre ways) and it sometimes really beat me, I'm ansious and I like to be in community and involving whit people that's why I and my Family decided my better option is communication, and well following what This video says, I already have experience at this, I wrote scripts, I like make exposition, explain, create things, and I have a inglés I have a somewhat exeptional knack for writing (In my opinion not at all, but is what my teachers, brothers, hommies, and everybody says to me). beside I thought in write some books when I was 14 years old but por pandemic and ghetto problems I couldn't Tomorrow I'm gonna start the university here in Peru and I wait it woth, I'm scared about what my family will say, I know many people thinks that I should chosed someone more sofisticated but I think this could worth. And however when I was preparinf for studying biology I thought "But I'm going to not use my writing and creative habilities" or "Here I'm not gonna use my social sciencia habilities", and now that I'm going to enter to study communication I think "But here I'm not gonna see this topics fo science what I like too" or "I can also study STEEM careers xd" however I thought that if i'm still thinking like this at the end I wouldn't study something, it's why I i decided to follow my strongest habilities in communication. But Iam also very attracted to the subjects of science, physics, biology, chemistry, etc. And now thanks to the video I know I can match this in the T profile (But I'm still thinking that someday I will study some sciencie major to satisfy my desire of knowledge XD), I think in many proyect such as make a divulgation megazine for the latin america about the topics of science and economy, a megazine free of politics, or some megazine like nature, do something to fighting ignorance, and maybe work in scientific journalism.
