This is such a wonderful video! I am in the process of making a career change and just took the CBEST and will be taking the CESTs within the next month or so. Thank you so much for all the information and your story of becoming a teacher. So great!

I love this for a few reasons. I have about a year left for my Bachelor’s degree in history, I live in Texas and am online college student (with my husband and I both recently retiring from the military it’s just easier) and I have had no real guidance as to what to expect from the process of pursuing teaching once I finish the degree. And, not really knowing what to expect and doing History online, I tend to lose motivation. I’m so happy you made this tag, it’s definitely reminding me it’s possible, people are doing it everyday! And to stay motivated

This is so encouraging and inspirational. I'm 50 years old, was a music major years ago, spent time as a missionary for a year, then came back to music and had a great opportunity to teach for a private school in CA teaching 3-12 music. During that time I went back to school and finished my BA in Interdisciplinary Studies which was a split between music and history. I have always loved history and specifically the diversity and humanities aspects of the subject. Since Covid I walked away from music as it really did not work online at all. Here I go at an older age and attempting my cbest first so I can substitute teach eventually. Also studying for subtest 1 of the cset social science. A lot of it is really overwhelming but teaching junior high primarily is my goal as I love that age group. Ultimately I have to start somewhere for sure! Thank you for all your great information and inspiration :)

I live in Cali and want to get mt teaching credential. I know for most credential programs, student teaching isn't a paid job. How did you stay afloat while student teaching, or did your credential program pay for you to student teach?
@toocoolformiddleschoolblog
@toocoolformiddleschoolblog 2 жыл бұрын
This is what prevents so many people from becoming teachers! You don’t get paid-in fact you PAY your tuition while working for free during the typical work day. So you have to work night shifts (around your credential class schedule) or take out enough student loans to keep you afloat 🤦🏻‍♀️

I had fun doing this with you, Megan. I think the extras are called "authorizations" . I have a few of those that allow me to teach up to 8th grade (English and Social Studies and I am close for Math).

there's so many requirements to become a teacher in california. I think that's why there's a huge shortage.

Julia Roberts yes ! I considered applying to do my Master's in teaching in California (because I live in Oregon) and it's going to be so much easier for me to get my teaching credential here in Oregon and then move to California at some point

It is actually ridiculous, and the amount you make doesn’t compare to how much it costs or the cost of living here!

I love the engagement idea but I do believe that students should be able to listen to a lecture. I went to private school for four years and pretty much all of our history classes were lecture

Natalie Swoveland I teach and I try to reserve one lesson every so often where I prepare the students for a lecture-based lesson and then I review their notes at the end and give them feedback. I like the way this balances more engaging styles with the much needed skill of attending to a lecture.

Yall have a great group. I have enjoyed watching all of them. Just a suggestion could yall find a high school science teacher to inspire this 27 year veteran. You all are inspiring and I am a big fan of all. But I sure would love to see a kindred biology teacher Thank you.

Thank you for inviting me to join in on this collab, Megan. 🌸🌸 It was so interesting to listen to your story. It is quite different from here in Australia. The study program was pretty much set once we picked our major and minor. Then, once employed by the state government, we can transfer between schools if there is a vacancy. I’m curious whether or not you get paid extra for doing your credential. 🌸
