Becoming an elementary school teacher was not my lifelong dream, but it definitely came up PRETTY DARN often in my life.
As I share with you how I became a teacher, I hope this helps those who are considering being a teacher, want to know how to become a teacher, or aren't sure if being a teacher is right for you :).

Hi Maya! It was so lovely to hear about your journey! As an aspiring teacher myself I love to hear about others experience and what lead them to choose this path! I loved what the 4th grade teachers reply was about her salary! It’s so true, everyone (for the most part) has had a teacher and in some way shape or form a teacher has influenced your life in some way! I know growing up that teachers played a big part in the reason I love to learn and why I value education so much and I hope to do that with my kiddos one day 😊 keep up the great work with your channel!! Love your positivity ♥️

@@vanessaventura7779 my major is social work basically and I didn’t enjoy going over to people’s houses to evaluate them. If you’re ok with visiting people in their social settings then do it. Most of the jobs listed dealt with sw visiting at least some place and doing a bunch of paperwork on your own time. That’s why I want to go back to school for something different 😭 It’s hard, wish we knew right away what we wanted to do.

I so needed this video!! I've been debating back and forth lately if I made the right choice on majoring in education or if I should've picked something different (ex: the medical field, what my parents probably would've prefer because lets be real $$$$) but when I watch your videos and other teacher-tubers I feel so happy and excited for my future classroom and students! Yet I'm surrounded by people that make me second guess myself whether that's because they don't believe I can do it or if they're just going by what everyone else thinks of when you say you want to be a teacher - "you won't make a lot of money doing that" ... needless to say, your story just reminded me of my own and made me realize that I am making the right decision.

Just wanted to say this video definitely inspired me! I was a nursing student and was 1 year from graduating when suddenly I started not feeling motivated to go on which resulted in getting low scores on the class and eventually kicked out of the program :( Fortunately after taking a semester break and getting a hold of counselors I found out that all my classes I took for nursing actually counted for a major in nutrition concentrated in dietetics. I am currently a junior majoring in nutrition in my new university. I truly believe that if you love what you do you'll do well and of course with guidance from the Lord. You definitely got me excited to start my last semester of junior year. Bless you :)

I had to place my education on hold when I was pregnant, was an early education major, and I debated to go back and finish. I would and still help some of my friends, nieces nephews with their homework because it gives me great vibes when I do. Anyway on a trip to the library last week there was these kids clearly struggling with their homework. I asked if they needed help and they said yes. Helped them with their spelling homework and a book report and the feeling I got was so positive and indescribable! I actually found your channel that same week and it freaked me out a little lol asked myself if it was a sign 😁 I am already making plans to go back to school this fall to finish what I started!

I never knew I wanted to teach as a kid. My sister and I played school with our stuffed animals, but I never knew what I’d do. I was 17 when I made the choice to major in elementary education because I thought I was good with my cousins. I relate to not being a natural born teacher. I got my degree in 2012 and worked in schools since, but didn’t get my own classroom until 2015-2016 teaching 2nd. I’m now in year 6 and teach 3rd. It’s nice to now have tenure, have my Masters, and be vested into my pension. My state has a good one! I’m still nervous for next year because I have a student teacher. He will only be my second one I’ve ever had.

I was a Business major in college with no aspirations to teach. After I had my second child, I saw an ad in the paper for after school teachers. I enjoyed working with children so much that I pursued certification. Teaching has changed over the years. It is much more demanding of your free time and the expectations that all students succeed is placed on the teacher. But there is life after so follow your dreams.

Omg!! It’s so funny to hear that we had similar interests growing up. 😂 In third grade, I told my teacher that I wanted to be like her so that I could keep a colorful classroom like she had. Then in high school, I ended up leaning towards nutrition (and even took all the classes that the school provided 😳) I was learning about my own body after a lupus flare in middle school and wanted to help others do the same. Now in senior year, I took some time to reflect on things that make me, ME. A big part of that was the fact that I loved watching my sisters grow up (there’s 5 of us girls lol). Not to mention all of the love I was surrounded by in my time of need!!! I’m so gratitude have had the teachers I did, because without them, my life would have been a lot harder.

Your journey is so similar to mine, I’m taking it as a sign that I should be a teacher as well! I always had being a teacher in the back of my mind, but the money aspect always made me cross it off my list. I then got really into nutrition & dietetics because I do like eating healthy and learning about what foods to eat and such. I made dietetics my major but was really lazy and taking it slow, because I wasn’t too motivated. But, then I realized it would be very medical-related. I also hate hospitals and I am very squeamish. Come to think of it, I love kids and working with them. I’m very organized, patient, and being around kids will bring me so much joy. I love every aspect of being a teacher, really. Well, I’ll have to see myself, I’m going to volunteer as an in-class assistant to a family friend who is a teacher (but I’m pretty sure). Luckily, I’m not far enough into it, all the classes I’ve taken are transferable. I’m not very materialistic and I don’t plan on getting married or having kids, so the money thing isn’t a concern for me at all. Simple life for me. Thank you so much! I now know my purpose in life!

I’m pursuing elementary education because God told me it’s where I belong, just like I belong in church serving him. It sounds crazy but I wanted to pursue child psychology! It was hard explaining that in my personal statement…but then I noticed some Christian themes in the assistant dean’s intro, which surprised me. I also realized that I too liked mentoring children and being part of their developmental experience, it was awesome.

So, so true. Teaching is the 4th job I've had in my life time. We need to parent our kids through the question of career much better than we do, generally. Where I live, you get paid more for a Masters in private school, but not in public schools. I would only get $3000/year more for a Masters, so I have no plans to pursue that pathway.

I just did the same last week! I think I would love teaching and I think I can handle it. But the biggest thing is I love children, but do I love them enough to really be around them for all those hours 5 days a week? (That’s pretty much the only thing I’m debating on atm

Love that you posted this video. I was a psychology major online and I couldn’t pass statistics online, so I was like in the same situation how can I graduate on time and not take stats? And they said you can change to liberal studies so I did! I still got to take psychology courses that I wanted but in the end I have a liberal studies undergrad. I didn’t take any education classes but in Texas teachers are in a serious need and you can certify to teach with any bachelors which is what I am looking into. Thanks for all your videos! They’re seriously so helpful. ❤️❤️

Maya! BIOLA! It changed my life. I too majored in education. I used to make stops at the Rose Chapel; it's my favorite place in the world! Two decades have passed since I graduated but the memories are deeply rooted in me. My education and Bible professors and mentors shaped my philosophy of education. I'm eternally grateful for they have implemented a strong Christian worldview within me which I strive to weave into my teaching and relationships with teachers, parents, and of course my students who challenge me to be a better person every day. Thank you for sharing your story. I am currently teaching at a Christian School in Korea and watching your videos have been a HUGE encouragement. Keep strong. Keep up the faith!

I am a dentist but been juggling with the idea of teaching for a few years. I finally decided to make the first step by improving my English in case I will teach it a 2nd language. Buut also I doubt if I will actually like my students,if I can manage their behaviour. I guess my biggest fear is “ will I be one of those teachers that struggles to manage his students?”. Because if so all is in vain... Still I do like children, I care about grammar, I care about education, I care about making the class interesting. Hmmm so many thoughts pass through my mind.

I really appreciated you sharing your journey to become an elementary teacher at a private school, especially since it is different than mine. I would like to share it with the teacher candidates who are taking a course with me this semester. it seems that at least a few people in the class are waffling about becoming a teacher. Maybe your personal account would be helpful to them. Thank you!

Your videos popped up in my recommendation. I’m doing my training as a secondary science teacher in the UK and have received quite a lot negative feedback from the class teachers in my placement(teaching kids with very low cognitive load, and their grades are awful). Did my degree and research masters in chemistry and maybe that’s why I got the offer. Teaching is very difficult, lots of frustration and why don’t they understand it? I ran 2 revision session with the kids, even worked through the revision booklet before the test, most of them still left the questions unattempted...maybe I should reconsider my career......

Mostly everything that you shared about your journey relates to what I went through. I was changing majors because everytime I would take classes for them I wouldn’t end up liking it. I ended up majoring in communications because one it was versatile, and two it was my last resort as I didn’t know what i wanted to do. All I knew was that I wanted to graduate on time. I do regret not taking an extra year to figure out what I want to do. I’ve been looking for jobs within my major field and I haven’t been motivated at all. They don’t make me excited to apply and instead dread it. I’ve been looking into whether I should get a second bachelors on a different major and thinking about different careers that interest me. Teaching is one of them and I was wondering do I have to major in liberal studies or an education major in order to go in the right path of teaching?

This story is so cool! Hey Maya, I'm kinda on the same track. At the moment I'm a sociology major as a second semester sophomore in college. But I don't want to be a sociologist I want to be either someone who works in an orphanage and interacts with the kids, or a Christian motivational speaker/pastor to teens or kids, or a elementary teacher but I'm not exactly sure which path I wanna do. And I don't want to like waste time, you know, taking more classes and staying longer in school or something. But I have a heart for children and helping people. Any advice??

So today, I have a dilemma if I should shift my course to BEED( Elementary Education) because currently I am a 1st year College and I take BSED(Secondary Education) as my course. When I apply to the University that I'm studying right now I chose BEED as my first choice and BSED as my second choice but back then when the list of names of passers posted, My name is on the list of BSED so, I continued that as my course because I always think that when I work after I graduate I can apply as an Elementary teacher but as times goes by I'd realized that I am not happy in my course and I didn't see myself as a High School teacher and whenever I saw a pre-school or elementary teacher with their students, there's something in myself that makes me so happy and I always imagined myself being around with kids. Today, I can't decide if I will shift. Then I search for some tips and I saw this vid of yours and I'm inspired so I just want to thank you for sharing your experience. You became one of my favorite teachers even tho I'm not becoming one of your students hhshshshs please wish me luck uwu *giggles* btw I'm from the Philippines:)

When I was younger I wanted to be a teacher. When I got older I realized the salary isn't that great and that society looks down on teachers. I decided to look into other careers that are similar to teaching. I came across speech-language pathology and after reading how great of a career and the pay are (in CA) I decided to pursue it. I'm a transfer student and didn't start taking my major courses until my junior year and soon after I thought "yeaaahhh this isn't for me." I returned to square one and decided to pursue teaching because I felt it in my heart that I was meant to be a teacher. My mom even scolded me and told me she always knew teaching was for me because I would always play school with my siblings. After many failed attempts to change my major, wanting to be done with undergrad and feeling that I'm running out of time, I remain a SLP major. I'm 23 and a senior but I think I will need an extra semester to finish. (Nooooo!) Some days I feel like giving up (I commute 1 hr 30 min to school) but then I think about all the time and money I have invested, and that I'm close to the finish line and I convince myself to continue. I just hope I can finish my BA this year and start a teaching credential program next year. Your videos give me motivation and I hope that one day I can inspire others the way you do.
