Yes, a key issue with my confidence has been feeling like a 'weirdo' that others will find me odd/strange and then trying hard to figure out what the appropriate ways are. Now I practice relaxing around others and saying/doing what seems right to me, and then if others find it odd - oh well. Edit, my experience has been that certain people find me analysing wanting to get deep into things unsettling/odd, so now I've found other people that also like to do this :)

not to be afraid to look stupid/wrong. I think that comes with age and maturity. when we are young we think we are so important and must impress everyone. `But as you get older, you realise, people don't really give a shit about you as much as you imagined. `If you die, they will be like - "oh, so sad" and after few minutes - "what is on netflix today"? unless that your very closest people, they will mourne little longer. @jamesrawlings5781

If you're implying that it sounds like a contradiction then yes, I thought it might come across like that. It's not a contradiction, though. Therapists like Albert Ellis and Paul Hauck talked about separating your traits / abilities etc from how you feel about your 'self' (the short version is they considered the 'self' far too complicated to accurately rate). So, thinking you're not very good at soccer is evaluating a trait/ability: feeling bad about yourself because you feel shit at soccer is judging yourself. Feeling superior about yourself for thinking you're great at sports is judging yourself. Taking steps to be a sportier person while accepting yourself as a worthwhile human (neither superior or inferior to others) no matter how good you actually get at sports, is refraining from judging yourself while simultaneously working on yourself. Simple.

Here's what he won't tell you. It's jealousy that makes you compare your suboptimal situation to others. And this is like judging others. If you feel that you feel unconfident because others can do things better then you'll notice that you start acting jealous sometimes. But it's also others that treat you in a way that makes you remain in your state because you create hostility and destroy sympathy and people don't have the time to think about your situation. Jesus wouldn't approve but in our society you are free to judge others when they can't stay "positive"(in our social competitive perception) for whatever reason. Jesus would judge them if they know what they do and that requires some damn skill to recognize that I guess. I also think you can be not confident because you compare yourself to your own standards and don't reach them. So I wouldn't instantly think someone compares himself to others in an evil way(is jealous) when he's negative in a social situation where he doesn't succeed. If everybody would do it this would create some Kind of perverted illusional hell for someone who is just angry because he fails. But usually you should recognize what he really is angry at. Hm Yeah don't take what I say too serious, I just like to write in the morning :D

There's a good program called Unbreakable Confidence (look for the site that has the big video on the homepage).. Those books are awesome! It's one thing to work on yourself.. but there are fit, successful people who STILL don't have the right mental state. The key is to revamp your mindset. There are fat people who are more confident than fit people, and there are poor people who are more confident than rich people.

@@Exalted- alcohol gave me confidence whilst drinking it (of course), but the after effects of alcohol I felt sapped my confidence, not just the “hangover”, but further on from that. I think making those physical changes (like removing alcohol from my life) helped me to make mental changes, and therefore gave me more confidence. I lived my whole life feeling like everyone was better than me and feeling worthless. I depended on achievements and praise to feel confident I became a perfectionist, had high standards and so obsessively competitive. Then I started working and wasn’t getting that praise and things quickly escalated. I was depressed. I hated work and everyone in it. Things were awful. My biggest help was understanding myself and the way I think and realizing I was not different and everyone thought like me and I was not a weirdo. And then I realized confidence should come from within!! Not from outside praises and acceptance! Things changed ever since. Even at work I started to shine and I even stopped hating it and everyone in it. My life is so much better now.

@j.walker6845
@j.walker6845 4 жыл бұрын
@velveteyes79 Well, sure not everyone is good, but nobody is totally bad all the time, so it's reasonable to say everyone is good sometime and at least has the capacity for goodness. Even evil people have done many good things, managed their responsibilites and so on. (Unrelated: if people would have the chance to be identified as good people, even if they aren't, they could go on to manifest it. Just as fears tend to manifest, so can positive expectations) It relates to confidence because there is a mirror relationship with humanity, people reflect you to yourself and vice versa. If you extend unconditional approval to someone, 1. they sense your good will and enter a comfortable and accepting posture. 2. you get a boost out of lifting someone up 3. you give yourself power because you have assumed the position of judge but without the baggage of making condemnation 4. by acknowledging the inherent/potential goodness in another person, you acknowledge it by proxy within yourself (you create a positivity feedback loop) 5. by placing positive expectations on others you again gain power as you are actively channeling positive energy through becoming a conduit 6. likewise there is a fear-cancelling element due to your production of positive energy allowing you to act with enhanced lucidity. These are some theories, I don't know exactly why this exercise gave me a confidence boost, but it did. Just give it a try. You don't have to tell someone 'you are a good person' (though you can), you can just think to yourself, 'that's a good person' and see how it alters your lens to reality

That is the standard quote I've seen a ton of times on office posters or inspirational memes. You should really listen to Russell's advice during the whole video. It is not just accepting who you are, but rather stop comparing yourself to absurd standards while improving yourself in areas you feel a need but with reasonable expectations. To simply accept yourself however you are without putting work toward self-improvement will lead to only more anxiety and less self-confidence.

I have always been shy and had very low confidence but I worked very hard throughout the years to the point where I feel confident and I wouldn't call myself shy anymore. Yet people still often say things like 'aww your shy' 'aren't you too shy to do that?' And 'the quiet one'. They say it to my face as if they are telling me what they think is my weakness. It still hurts me every time!

This video is timeless and well thought out. Helped me see through some difficult times of self analysis. The danger is overconfidence. Success brings that and what we see as faliure the opposite. The creative overactive mind often suffers this and that is me. Balance is what i am striving for. Good luck to all and be happy with self.

I have found that a lot of people who didn't manage well success and were overconfident by it was because they rose too quickly to it and, yes, a lot of those people had privilege. A lot of men are taught that sky is the limit for them. Even if they live through some bad stuff, they still believe they can vs. other people who are never told that culturally nor see themselves in positions of power. So, even if they had worked for where they were, it wasn't nearly a 1/100th or 1/1000th as some unlucky people in our societies with its current systemic discriminations.

For the longest I can remember I’ve always hated myself even thinking back to when I was about 5 years old but not for the the way I act or the way I look, I don’t compare myself to others and I understand that I(we are) am not In control of everything that happens except our own situation. That being said I work out, listen to music, do things that make me feel good yet I still feel this way. I don’t like to think negatively but I feel like this feeling will never go away, it went away for a year back in jr year of high school but for the past 3 years it’s been back to this way. I’m not over weight and I’m not that bad looking but I absolutely hate myself and can’t seem to figure out why. Even after all the therapy, seeing a psychologist, going to impatient programs. I still see everything in the worst light when it comes to my self yet I can be so bright in other situations regarding others. You don’t have to read this or even like this comment but I hope who ever feels my pain overcomes this hardship and learns that no one is perfect and we all have purpose. Thank you for listening and stay safe💯

I hope you can somehow find the self-love within you to make you feel confident. I hated myself for years too, everything about me. But then I started focusing on what goals I wanted to accomplish and seeing what I wanted to improve about myself. I started to really rocus on that progress which in turn helped my mental state and made me love myself for the changes I was making. It's not perfect and everu now and then I'll get down on myself, but there has been improvement which is what is important. You recognize that you don't look bad and have things going for you in life which is good. Hopefully one day we can both find a solution to this problem.

I suffered (pass tense) big time. I had parents who used to beat me and put me down at every opportunity while under their roof. An evil little voice continued the work for them after they passed nearly 30 years ago, the main one being how 'useless' I was as my relationships, friendships and dreams broke down for reasons beyond my limited perception. After many years of restlessly searching/researching WHY? Two answers I deducted was: 1. Stop listening to those dead voices; and 2. increase my perception through reading reading reading, Fiction first solely to increase my vocabulary without overloading my brain with too much technical information before eventually moving fairly recently on to non-fiction for technical data as my ability at retention increased. Now I've become a gibbering idiot. Much better than the shrinking violet that was constantly taken advantage off or kowtowing to manipulation or hiding in plain sight.

@@CalebHimself I discovered I too needed to do self examination on my own, after, however, reading literally dozens of self help books, and 400 free hours of sessions with two Clinical Psychologists (I had a lot of layers to uncover, and it was tax payer funded). Then I came across Philosophers like Neatzsche, Locke, Camus, etc and YT channels like; Philosophies For Life, Einzelganger, WuWei Wisdoms, Eternalised, Brains Explained and many more. My original quest has exceded expectations thanks to the availability of educational learnings provided by YT'bers. I heard and read of the inner child; I was always skeptical of the concept, after all there is only one me. I've since become a believer. I found my original self, my original dreams, desires, hopes and curiousity. I found the me that was me before life and the ribald influences of grown ups dictated terms. I went back to toddler, infant, baby and even the womb to discover me. I am discovering that with self actualization the satisfaction appears greater. Good work for you to push through. You and those close to you will benefit a great deal. Keep up the good work.

@Foo Me Yeah dude, continue telling people that everything is fine and there is no need to confront challenges and work to improve on reality. That will help. Self-blame CAN be toxic, it's not that the word itself is toxic, there is a huge difference. Self-blame can give a person ownership over one's own problems, the main difference really is the productive outcome that comes out of it. It's more complicated than either of you are really making out tbh, that's why life can be hard.

Its good advice. It's like the book "the subtle art of how not to give a fuck". Its a refreshing change. The core message is the same. Care about what matters like facing your fears and overcoming them. Then you will like yourself more and feel more comfortable. The whole don't say things like "can't" thing is not for self confidence imho. It is for outward success, like in work. It is vital not to have any negative self talk and regret pangs. But facing inner demons sounds like a great plan, it's just worded differently to something like "improve areas where you have room to grow". It gets to the point a bit quicker too.

@@anirose6807 not really upset but your comment of endearment is usually used on people in their teenage years. Maybe I'm just not used to it being used on a man in his forties with facial hair. Russell... I have been watching quite a few of your KZbin vids and like what you have to say... you speak the truth not in answers but in critical thinking. This video on self confidence is good and shows us the sensitivity you have which is admirable. Now I would say if we want to get to the bottom of this issue we need to go way back to how our society is structured beginning with school, tv, advertising... a lot of it points out how "not good enough" and how we need to strive to become better. I say bullshit to this approach because it supports neurosis.. It is really apparent now a days because of social media and people opening about their struggles but it has always been around. Gossip also plays a part in this which aims to shame people. I so appreciate what you are doing by exposing how we have been manipulated all through our lives...

Russell, thanks for being so authentic and for sharing the wisdom you have. I think your words ring true for me and so many others because it's so clear that you are speaking from a place of true transparency and that you are honestly willing to consider that your opinions are just that and that you aren't trying to push an agenda. I know I'm just so tired of words, just useless words that people have no shortage of these days. I'm sick of the noise of chaos and fear and anger that has become the new normal, at least in my country. Your words are lovely words that are being put out there in an effort to make things better. It's awesome that so many people are listening. It feels as if you are making a difference for the good. You are giving people hope that maybe it can be fixed, maybe there is a way to bring some sort of order and calm into this swirling, chaotic mess. So thank you. Truly. You are making this world a better place.

Amazing how I have seen my current self in your words. I was quite confident about two years ago. It was before I decided to pursue improvement in all aspects of my life, because my life was literally going into deep shit. This decision had an unbelievable postive impact on my life, but everything has a price I guess. Because I was in this mode of pursuing my goals, I started to compare myself to those, who have already achieved it. It made me insecure and unconfident, whenever I am in a social group, which involves this subject. I think your words are the cure to this insecurity. I should be confident by comparing myself to who I was yesterday, not to other people fantasies and expectationw. Wise words Russell! I appreciate your guidance.

You know what, when someone is being pure and honest, and shares vunerability in something we relate to, it really resonates with us. We *like* to be wholesome, it fills our inner lines with salvation, hope and some joy. Joy that even at our weakest and darkest, it's a place where others have fallen, and that life is ok. I really like this video, i wasn't expecting to, but i had to stop and replay certain sentences over and over. Because despite being things i know, acknoledge as my own experience, sometimes the way it is phrased can really ring your bells upstairs and sink in so well. It is a therapy. To hear it the right way and let it sink in. Makes me feel stronger to re-engage with these thoughts, and chalk up where i am in life right now. I'm doing ok. I have a bit of work to do, but i'm ok :) This purity and honesty, discussing vunerabilities and how to cope with them, it makes you like the person. I like you Russell, you're alright mate ! And if you ever was out with me, we'd take care of those mindless yobs no problem lol. I have always felt naturally defensive of people who i see as being true to self and have something to offer to life, rather than mindless neanderthal behaviour. I didn't like seeing people bullied at school, and 99% of the time i wanted to stop them, and i did many times, just often it was complicated. If we were all like them, society would go down faster than it is now. The old adage that the bullys ended up with broken lives and the 'nerds' with success, proved to be true in my environments. But these days we know better now than to simply point the finger at the 'bad' people, there is sometimes a reason why they end up like that.

Great message. Thanks for taking the time to explain it in a way that makes sense. Too often do we get bombarded with self-help slogans without any sort of reasonable explanation or meaning behind the phrases. This is great advice for those who lack confidence, and for those who are constantly comparing themselves to others which always seems to lead to self-destruction. Better to completely focus on what would truly benefit ourselves individually through deep self-introspection.
