I had to stop Esperanto on Duolingo after awhile because on my phone app I wasn't getting grammar tips and I was finding it hard to continue. Now I'm reading "A Complete Grammar of Esperanto" by Ivy Kellerman Reed, and it's helping quite a bit.
@EsperantoVarietyShow6 жыл бұрын
I generally don't recommend the Ivy Kellerman Reed book. It was written in the infancy of Esperanto and uses a lot of grammatical terminology which isn't really necessary for learning Esperanto. The Richardson book is inexpensive and available as an ebook or paperback. You could also log onto the web version of Duolingo and read the tips and notes. I usually recommend FEC, which is the email based course that Lernu kun Logano was based on.

Esperanto Variety Show Ok, thanks for the suggestion. I was under the impression that Esperanto, for the most part, hasn't changed that much except for the addition of new vocabulary to keep up with modern technology.
@EsperantoVarietyShow6 жыл бұрын
It's not so much that Esperanto has changed - although it has. The bigger problems are (1) that the world has changed, and (2) language teaching methodology has changed. Not only is the vocabulary in the Kellerman book outdated (for English as well), but she tries to force Esperanto into a traditional grammatical framework which doesn't really apply. There are lots of texts from that era from people who had just learned Esperanto themselves and then saw themselves fit to teach it.

@@IcouldBNE1 I was gifted that book in paperback years ago, but it wasn't until either February or March (when sheltering at home began in the USA) that I really cracked it open, and I personally have absolutely loved it and its approach. These days I'm augmenting my studies with Duolingo (which I've kinda allowed to take focus), but being only about a third of the way through Universala's Teach Yourself Esperanto, I'd still recommend it very highly. I'm very grateful to have it at my disposal and intend to finish it (even if Duolingo keeps running interference!)

I like the idea of being fluent in Esperanto. I finished the Duolingo tree, a book called Esperanto for Beginners by JF Conroy, and I keep a "secret" diary in Esperanto. But I have social anxiety, so I don't really want to do Ekparolu and definitely not Pasporta Servo, and I have no one in real life who is interested in learning it; so, I have no one to really talk to. What's the point of fluency if you can't speak with others? I guess I'll settle for "good enough" to read and write things in Esperanto. Maybe one day I'll be less self-conscious and actually able to talk to others in real life using Esperanto.
@EsperantoVarietyShow6 жыл бұрын
So... what are you comfortable with? I would suggest doing the Lernu kun Logano course on this channel. Sign up for a free email tutor and actually send in your lessons. (Only a few people actually do.) It's a lot different from Duolingo and I've heard from multiple Duolingo learners that they find their understanding really jumps when they do the email course. At least one of my italki students have told me they're not comfortable with ekparolu (it's not clear to me why) but they're comfortable talking with me. I don't see the difference, but I don't judge either. Whatever works.

Thanks for all of your hard work, Tomaso. I started teaching myself Esperanto as a kid, when I saw Esperanto mentioned in my Scout handbook and I later came across Cresswell's TYE (1960s Ed.) in my local public library. I fell in love with the language, but it was impossible finding anyone to speak with, being a kid in a small town in the pre-social media era. I forgot about Esperanto for 25 years, but when I saw it added on Duolingo, I returned to the language and instantly remembered how much I loved it as a child. With all the online resources and Esperanto speakers on social media nowadays, I feel inspired to continue my studies and I hope the language will see a resurgence. I appreciate all of your hard work and your responses on Duolingo are so useful. Just wanted to say thanks.

is esperanto like the ukulele of languages? just came up with that. i want to learn this!
@EsperantoVarietyShow5 жыл бұрын
As a matter of fact, ukulele was the first instrument I learned how to play (not counting some failed music lessons in years past.) I played ukulele before it was mainstream. At that time it was next to impossible to find a ukulele which wasn't a toy. I had my grandmothers ukulele which was a real, playable instrument. Now you can buy quality ukuleles in any music store. I've never heard this comparison, but I have heard Esperanto compared to the recorder. The idea is that we can teach it to children - not so they'll become master recorder players, but so they can learn various things about music and playing an instrument which will serve them later in life after they've decided what they want to learn. Did I mention, I was a member of the local Recorder Society chapter for a while and treated the recorder as an end to itself? My approach is that the best reason to learn Esperanto is to speak with Esperanto speakers. I hope you enjoy Esperanto.

I'm learning Esperanto recently and at first I felt like I could really do this and then the further I've gotten and also adding literature, the more I think it's actually impossible. 😂😂 Trying to look up words in the dictionary is impossible because of the agglunative nature. Still, I really like it and am sticking to it. I'm hoping one day things will start to click again like in the beginning.

The fact that you think it's impossible (but are sticking to it) is a good sign. I worry about the people who have been at it for 10 minutes and think it's really easy. Here in the UK there is definitely no religious motivation connected with Esperanto.The national Anglican (Episcopalian) church used to hold a regular Esperanto service in London, probably not any more. There is a Quaker Esperanto Society, though in my experience surprisingly few Quakers are interested. man im lost are the 50 era books still worth it i hate dual lingo
@EsperantoVarietyShow10 ай бұрын
I'm not sure I'd recommend starting with a book from 1950, but I thought I mentioned a few other books that I would still suggest using. The newest is Complete Esperanto by Tim Owen. Yes, it's worth it. As for Duolingo - while just about EVERYBODY learning Esperanto these days ends up over there, I don't think it's a great tool for learning Esperanto. It should never be your primary method for learning Esperanto. I'm not posting a lot of new stuff on KZbin - but there's a good back catalog to check out. Mostly I'm posting to my mailing list : esperanto.ck.page -- it'd be great to have you following along, including hopefully a free course announcement.

The language is designed to be that way...particularly if you know even a little bit of Spanish, German, Greek, Portuguese, Italian, English, etc. It draws from the aforementioned languages similarities.

Thanks for the re-assurance. Similar comments came in when the video was new. I'm not sure how "worried" I ever really was in the first place. All the same, I question your premise. Your statistic is oddly specific - and probably false. I'll defer to Steven Pinker on the question of whether the youth don't speak good. Bonus: Be sure to look up his comments on "I can haz cheezburger".

Learn a living language. Esperanto is a waste of time. Learn Spanish or French or Mandarin. It’s ridiculous.

So, what was your goal in posting this comment? Certainly you don't think someone who has been speaking Esperanto daily for 20 years is going to stop now just because some stranger on KZbin left a comment. Have you stopped to think *why* I have stayed involved with Esperanto if it really is useless? Do you know what other languages I speak?
