I like how you put “NOT in 30 days” acknowledging how some people act like they can just be fluent in a language in like one month. I’ve been learning Spanish for a whole year and can barely hold a conversation in it.

It's super hard to master a different language. They say to master something it takes 500 hours of practice, which is approximately 21 straight days. You would have to dedicate 16 hours a day to it at the minimum

I am Mexican-American, fluent in both languages, and I have been an ESL teacher for half of my life, passionate about teaching people to speak English for their careers or personal interest. Not so long ago, I convinced myself to start teaching Spanish on the side. It hasn't been easy. I guess what I am trying to say is that after watching your video and listening to you talk about your heartfelt experience as a Spanish student, you reminded me of why I love what I do. Thinking back on the 20+ years as an ESL teacher, I have only met one person with the genuine self-motivation to learn English driven by the love for the language and the cultures like you. I feel that I should have met more people with your enthusiasm for learning a new language. I admire and congratulate you on your success in achieving your dream. You have inspired me to continue teaching Spanish and maybe, to instill in my Spanish students the desire to learn as I do with my ESL students. Thank you!

Thank you for the kind note 🙏🏽 I think a lot of systems push people to start learning languages without first helping them fall in love with the process, so it’s not hard to imagine how you might end up with classes full of people whose hearts are not in it. But I can confidently say that there are lots of us that adore languages, have a lot of love for the cultures and people, and are committed to the process of learning. Those are the kinds of people I really enjoy surrounding myself with. Sending my best to you and your students. Un gran saludo desde Nueva York 👋🏽

I too would like to add that in school we are told that it is a required class, so no one really takes it seriously because it was a genuine selection. As an African American woman, I would say at least from my demographic, you would almost have to sell it to us on why it would be beneficial. Not sure of the age you teach, but middle and up, you can tell them the benefits of the career opportunities and such. Now in my 30s, I am trying to learn it. You can also touch on changing the narrative for our demographic by saying that “you too can be bilingual.” Interactive games of conversation and role play with props may help. Make it fun! I wanted to learn in school but they made it so boring it was like whatever. A lot of students would skip the class and still pass. I was an honor roll student btw. Many teachers don’t have their heart in it so I salute to you and hope things get better.

I will be 71 in 3 weeks. I recently started studying German. I’m a native English speaker as well as an intermediate French speaker. You are so CORRECT! If you don’t love it, you will struggle and struggle. I spoke to myself so much in French that I often have a conversation in my head in French and I have also dreamed in French. I’m too old to make much practical use of anything in my sphere of influence but I do run across opportunities. I was very shy, or anxious is a better word for it, to just join in and start a chat when I was younger and self concise. Now I DON”T CARE if I make a fool of myself because it’s FUN! And that my friends is what keeps me going. I plan on adding other languages to my repertoire. Thanks for your candid video.

I’m sure life will present you some opportunities to put your languages to use, and you can always go seek out opportunities yourself or speak them for you. Making mistakes? Good! That’s what learning is all about 🙌🏽 Congrats on the French (and rooting for your German as well). - A fellow language lover 🙏🏽

I've been working on my Spanish off and on for some time now because I wanted to retire to a Spanish speaking country. Well I'm here now, living in Argentina and still struggling. I'm amazed on how overwhelmed and lazy my brain can become; I want to learn it so badly I can taste it. I've heard the older you are the more difficult it is to learn a new language, but I don't believe that. If you really want something you must commit yourself. Thanks for the learning tips, some of them I've heard before but they are good to hear again especially when you've fallen off the horse as I have lately. Time to get back on.

I agree with you-I don’t buy the antics of “too old to learn a language” either. You’ve got this 🙏🏽 If you’re in Argentina long-term, that’s a golden opportunity. Why don’t you try the no-English language pledge that I did in Spain? It’ll be hard for a few weeks/early months, but it’s unbelievably cool when you see your brain finally start to “get it”. Can’t wait for you to be trailing through Argentina in full Spanish 🚀

It's great to see you two helping each other. I decided yesterday to start self learning Spanish. Over the years of course I have bits and pieces of the language but i don't speak it because if it' said back, I only catch some if any at all the words lol. Don't want to be one of those Americans that patronizes the language to test with others then laugh it off, it's trashy and disrespectful. But anyways God bless you both! You two WILL win

Keep at it, you’ll both get better over time. I am living the same scenario. My wife is from Mexico and my native language is English. She spoke very basic English when we met, and my Spanish was mediocre at best. Fast forward 17 years….I’m still not fluent but more functional and her English, while not perfect is much better…though she still struggles with some words (like world vs word)… Both of our kids are fluent in Spanish because my wife has always primarily used Spanish with them at home.

That's great to hear keep it up! If I could offer a quick suggestion the term "Hispanic" refers to a person that speaks Spanish regardless of race. This is why someone from Equatorial Guinea (African Country) and Spain can both say they're Hispanic. Maybe "Afro-Latino" is a better term? Latino implies someone with Iberian (Spain-Portugal), Mezo-American (Pre-Colonial), and African roots. A person from Brazil can identify as "Latino" but not "Hispanic." All this to say, its not a big deal!! Keep learing. Buena Suerte (good luck) my Hispanic brother!!
@NazraT1704
@NazraT1704 8 ай бұрын
@idenou9577 small note, latino is just someone from Latin America. Doesn't have anything to do with spain or Africa. So an afrolatino is someone with African and Latin American heritage. Spanish would refer to Spain, and as you said, Hispanic is just spanish speaking in general
@Afrocreolebombshell
@Afrocreolebombshell 8 ай бұрын
@@NazraT1704actually being Latino/a is someone who is a descendant of French, Italian, Portuguese, and Spain. And all the other European Latin countries. Being Latin is not a race. It’s language and culture. Like ppl with Louisiana creole roots are Latino/a and Haitian Creole are latino/a too. Look at beyonce…..she is Latina .
@NazraT1704
@NazraT1704 8 ай бұрын
@jazziejay0918 no: "Hispanic refers to a person with ancestry from a country whose primary language is Spanish. Latino and its variations refer to a person with origins from anywhere in Latin America (Mexico, South and Central America) and the Caribbean." From Dukedotedu The Latin in latino refers to Latin America, not all the languages based on Latin. French people are French, not latino. Literally have never heard anyone else think that And Beyonce is a mix of African, Native American and French and calls herself black. So again, no, not a Latina And I agree, being latino isn't a race, it's an ethnicity

Excellent summary of the keys to becoming fluent in a second language. What I like most is that, unlike many language instructors on KZbin, Jerry doesn't ditch studying grammar in favor of just learning phrases and being immersed in the new language. Grammar, syntax, vocabulary...these alone don't get you anywhere close to fluent, but they do provide a solid foundation for understanding those phrases and participating in conversations with confidence.

🎉I identify so much with this video! I also can remember being a kid fascinated by the Spanish language. After many years of traditional in-class lessons and giving up, I’ve decided to pick up the torch again 🎉. I’m learning so much more by fumbling my way through light hearted conversations with other Spanish speakers, than i did in the classroom. Thank you to those very kind and patient people who converse with me and appreciate my efforts. They truly don’t understand how helpful it is!

Thanks for another great video, Jerry! This one is not just inspiring, but it has practical ideas for learning any language. No one size fits all approach, and no "magical shortcuts". Instead you deliver a message that language learning grows from the inner desire to learn. You show that it's possible! And what's also great is that your other videos show so many incredible tools that are available now that AI (like ChatGPT) can be such a powerful language learning partner.

Thank you, Tom! I think the “how” can take shape in many ways, but they “why” is often the missing piece. I hope this helps learners! And you’re spot on. Rarely do I get very interested in new language tools, since I think the basics take you far, but I have a lot of hope that AI and VR will make marked a difference in helping people learn languages faster.
