Please, believe me, I have all sympathy for this strong and determined young lady. I'm sorry for what must have been a painful and terrifying time for you, Sarah Todd. I've been a Registered Nurse, and the pressure on healthcare workers can be immense. Not an excuse, health care needs to be better. Funding for training, for infrastructure, for better wages, for supporting health workers to get into their profession and stay for a career. It can take years of training and study just to qualify. Yes, even for nurses. Burnout is common. We need to do better.

This all makes me think of my mother-in-law who was told she was faking it and so many things. Because of the malpractice and neglect she ended up needing her leg amputated above the knee, which led to so many other problems. It could have been prevented in her case if only they had taken her seriously. It's terrible when this sort of things happens. Only with where I live now do I have access to doctors that actually believe me when I tell them something and are even proactive about dealing with it.

The Neurologist asked me some questions, did some reflex tests and had the diagnosis within that first appointment. It's exhausting explaining to people who don't want to just Google it themselves. I'm still learning that I don't have to try and make someone understand. Im disabled from over 20 diagnosed conditions, two of which being stage 4 Endometriosis, and Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome, which flare up together. I have been gaslit in sooooo many ERs, but this?! This is ridiculous! I can't even process this, idk how anyone could do that to you😭😭😭 I had a dr ignore my Endometriosis pain for so long, ive now lost 6 organs from it (gallbladder, uterus, fallopian tubes, cervix, one ovary, and appendix. In that order), and i will probably never forgive that dr. I wish I had the money to sue her, she basically ruined my life just because she thought I was drug seeking. For YEARS. Mind you, I have never ONCE asked for any specific medication, ive only ever asked for help working on my Endometriosis so im not in debilitating pain every day. I literally never asked for any meds, much less narcotics. Idk, I just feel like I would be a different person if I was treated when my symptoms began (14), and not after Endometriosis had completely covered my gallbladder, and made it fail, and a general surgeon diagnosed my Endometriosis via a gallbladder biopsy, but he said Endometriosis was literally everywhere. My first excision surgery took almost 5 hours, and ive had more than 5 excision surgeries now. I havent been able to work since I was 25, id give ANYTHING to have my health. Anything. Im constantly doing everything, but I feel like every time one health condition gets better, I get diagnosed with 3 more conditions. It feels never ending😢

@jeanetteh.9240Күн бұрын
I have had many surgeries. It had been my good fortune to mostly receive excellent care. The best you can do is: a) ask your primary care doctor for a referral to a specialist; and b) check online with the Medical Board of your state to see if the surgeon you are considering has had any complaints lodged against him or her. Also, know that you may have to travel to find the best care. If that happens, the hospital can help you find reasonably priced, or free lodging for your support person, and for you if you need to stay in the area for a few days.

Hey ST, thank you so much for sharing your story. I have tethered cord syndrome and EDS, which have caused partial paraplegia, so hearing other’s stories makes me feel much less alone. Did the horrible ER doctor ever face repercussions? I can entirely understand if not, especially when your mother had so much more to focus on than legal action. I ask because I was in a very similar situation, I was 10 and had extreme abdominal pain, but it was blown off as period cramps and drug seeking (as a 10 yr old) by the first ER doctor. The next day I was in even worse pain, to the point I couldn’t move without throwing up, I was losing consciousness, etc. and was taken to the ER again. Turns out my ovary ruptured because of a cyst and I was bleeding out. Took 4 liters of blood to get my levels back up. I’d lost 65% of my blood volume in two days. My mom put a complaint in with the hospital, but we were in absolutely no place to pursue legal action, financially and just life in general.

Imagine being airlifted to the place that is supposed to be the absolute best place to take care of you, only to be accused of faking and being discharged. Unbelievable!!!

God I can feel the stress you and your mom must’ve felt during those 6 hours of being ignored. It makes me feel physically ill with the thought of being treated as if you were faking a very serious and scary condition. Sounds traumatizing tbh

Thank you for sharing your story. I recently went to physical therapy to help with some muscle weakness from scoliosis in my lower back. I had been told growing up that it was mild, and it definitely is, but mild doesn't mean pain free. Seeing your xray and how bad your scoliosis got in your neck, you must have endured so much pain. o_o I hope that you continue feeling benefits from the spinal fusion surgery and never have to feel like that again.

Everyone is saying the doctor should lose his license. That’s not enough. He needs to be in jail lmao

Was the condition made worse by the inaction of the first doctor?

Did you pursue action against the doctor and hospital that denied you care? Is it possible that the damage could have been lessened if he/she had listened to you and administered some kind of aniti-viral medication?

Do the doctor do a full neuro assessment?
@WingedMatchbox22 сағат бұрын
Do you live in a small town? I ask because small town hospitals don’t see a lot of serious medical conditions and this leads to situations like this. Always go to a large city where serious conditions are seen frequently.

No I don’t.

I hope the hospital did a review of your chart, and that first doctor who did nothing to help you. As soon as you were describing your symptoms, I was thinking you should have been sent for a stat MRI, or CT. I don't know if having those tests hours earlier would have made any difference in your overall outcome. But that was absolute negligence on his behalf.

I can’t help but hope that the first doc you saw in emerg was called on his poor performance

I bet he was. I am sure her eventual diagnosis was relayed to him. ER nurses and docs talk to each other. It definitely got back to him. Jerk
