@Lowell's Fish Lab I just wanted to let you know, that I finally found a female after about 9months looking actively, and I was thinking it had to be a sneaker male but she was completely plain and drab but then I saw them spawning and she started to show just the lightest hint of orange on her and when they aren't mating she goes back to colorless...but I wanted to thank you for your video I watched it SEVERAL times so I could get the best idea of what the females look like. Hello! Your guide, which I watched over a year ago, has helped me in my own journey of breeding and raising scarlet badis, I currently have 2-3 males and 2-3 females in a heavily planted 10 gallon. I have actually documented some quite strange behavior which I found interesting. Which is: the loose shoaling of about 4 sub dominant males, which I find to be a learned behavior. Over the past year, I have learned so much and observed amazing things from these fish that I never would have thought of seeing if I had not watched your video. In short: I thank you so much for your sharing of this information to the world and allowing us to experience what you have.

That is so great to hear. Thank you! I love watching fish and figuring out why they do what they do. Breeding is a great way to see a broader range of their behaviors. The full spectrum of behaviors comes into play when fish breed.

Yea I have a black tiger colony and it is the same with them. Originally i got 5, 3 quickly developed dominant male coloring, the other two had some hint of male coloring. The bigger more male colored of these two turned out to be a female after all. After some generations in my care now I would also recommend to check body shape. In direct comparison you should be able to tell once they are around 1cm length.

Have you ever observed a Scarlet Badis that just glass surfs continually. Have a nice Scarlet Badis (who killed the other 2 males) in a 10 gal planted tank with a few otocinclus and Neocaridina shrim. Often he goes to one of the different sides of the tanks and starts surfing along the glass. It's not water parameters (should be very clean). And whether or not I am there or not doesn't matter. I also don't believe it to be due to the reflection either as he does it in all combinations of (room light on/off, tank light on/off). He does it so much that he has given himself some scarring on one side of his face (doesn't resolve with erythromycin). He's been at this for almost 5 months now, and I have no idea how to get him to stop (adding more plants and hardscape has not seemed to help, except meaning I don't have to see him do it so much).
@MakeMoreFish2 жыл бұрын
I've seen them glass surf and it's hard not to interpret it as an expression of stress. In my case it's always been temporary. I'm not sure what I could add that you haven't already tried. I hope your fish feels better
