Pre-order now to be the first to get a copy of this book that has all my personal tips. geni.us/SimplifyVegGardening Winter is typically the time when we need to think about preparing our Bee Keeping equipment ready for the coming season. Over the past few years, I have been building my own Bee Hives. In the UK it is hard to get pine or Cedar in wide enough boards and timber is very expensive.
Over the last few years, I have been using exterior grade plywood for my brood boxes and been having fantastic results with longevity.
Today I will show you how I build my national beehive brood boxes from ply. Join me in this step by step guide on how to make the cheapest brood boxes.

I really like your design and the build. I do believe though that I am going to modify the dimensions for Langstroth frames as they are far more common here in the States and I already have a shop full of them. I do genuinely like the look of the outside though. Gives the hives a much more dressed appearance than making them appear like I filing cabinet sitting out in a field.

Hello from the Blue Mountains in Australia. We traditionally use pine over here. At first I was sceptical about the design but, with a little patience on my part , I ignored the fact that you did not have a blade guard, that you did not wear hearing protection ( I'm very deaf ), and, I acknowledge that you are skilled and precise. Not sure if no blade guard for someone less skilled is a good idea. Could be fingers everywhere. I'm a builder/ carpenter who has seen too many serious injuries. Thank you for an excellent video I have subscribed. Please wear hearing protection. I will be using your design for my two frame and five frame Nucs. Thanks again Roy
@simplifygardening
@simplifygardening 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Roy. I use a lot of sleds on the tablesaw so a blade guard cannot be used then. But also It is my personal view that It is better to see the blade while you are pushing the work through and providing you are using good techniques you should never be close enough to cause any issues. However people who are new to saws should always use them
@PEGuyMadison
@PEGuyMadison 6 жыл бұрын
Nice... I do a lot of wood working projects, one tip I have is pre-painting plywood with a roller will save you a lot of time and better coverage, you can touch up any issues after the build is complete. Also.. with all those pine dimensional lumber cuts.. do the angle cuts up front rather than pushing individual pieces through.. every cut on the table saw has risk. But I will try your method!

Really pleased that I have found this. I have been working on engaging my local community in both beekeeping and gardening. This has been such a success that I now have to work out how to find a cost effective way of putting hives in three schools, one church and a number of other pieces of land. As you can guess, this could cost an arm and a leg so I really need to make my own hive boxes. Many of the ones that I have seen have difficult joints but yours looks a lot more straight forward. Thank you very much. Is it possible to get your measurements etc, please? The other question I have is (just in case I fail miserably), do you sell the boxes?

Awesome build. I'm a woodworker (Sheffield), and have been asked if I could make some hives. They are happy with either Langstroth or National. As I have never even seen a hive before, never mind made one, your video makes it clear how to build the National. I have to say that I prefer the National, as it seems a stronger build (when using butt joints). My contact says "...but the issue I have is that without proper dove tail joints they tend to fall apart after a season." I use glue a fair bit in my builds (indoor and out) and was wondering if there was a reason why you don't use glue (if any), as with that construction technique along with screws and glue (PVA), I suspect I could get a strong hive that should last a few years, especially if the hives could be varnished or painted. If painting/varnishing, is there anything that should be avoided? As I have said, I'm not a beekeeper, so utterly clueless on that front. I'm going to email you with a request for plans (sizes), (as you replied to another poster that you were happy to supply them), though I suspect I will need to build to the sizes of my contacts inserts (whatever they may be called) Are there any stresses on the hive that I need to be aware of? For example removing honey, or inspecting stuff? Potential changes:- > I do have a router table (I used to have one identical to yours) though, to cut the rebates on the top rails I will simply use the table saw with a higher fence (to allow up ending of the panel) to cut, using two saw cuts to remove the corner edge, as this will be a lot quicker. > If you screw the router table to your bench or use F/G clamps on the feet, that will stop your touter table 'walking' along your bench. > If cutting timber (ply isn't normally a problem) I would recommend put a riving knife behind your table saw blade (kickback safety). I had a guard affixed to my riving knife on my DeWalt table saw. I cut off the riving knife to a height just below the top of the saw blade (to allow 'blind' cutting of slots or dados , because like you, I like to see my blade. It works a treat. > I may consider a shallow rebate (dado) on the butt joint to help prevent splitting (spreading along laminations) of the ply when screwing the box build together, tho seems you were okay on your build (I like the 3.5mm Reiser cutter screws for screwing into end grain 18mm ply). To cut the angled timber I will buy wider timber and effectively cut two pieces (each having the same angle) in one cut, giving less waste. Again, I loved the build and method for 'an extra pair of hands' I will email you soon. Cheers.

Hi, Thanks for the video - I can use a few of your tips to improve the nuc boxes I make. One question: The bottom edge of your hive has a very wide flat surface. Normally the inset piece of ply would stop a bee-space from the bottom and there would be a similar rabbet cut in the bottom of the angled piece. Without this I imagine there's much more chance of crushing bees when you stack brood boxes for combining etc - do you find this a problem?
@simplifygardening
@simplifygardening 5 жыл бұрын
No mike its never an issue as i always put my supers on at a 45 degree angle to the brood then twist, this allows the bees plenty of time to move

Hi, thanks for the instructional video. How do you weatherproof the plywood? The plywood boxes I made are starting to suffer from delamination of the plywood after several years of service. Nice tablesaw and router, that makes working a lot easier! :-)

Great instructional video. Could have been improved by giving dimension information and details of paint safe for bees. Also I noted that you did not fit any rails and there was no rebate at the bottom of the box as there is on a National. Really enjoyed watching your video but thought I would mention improvements you could make if you decide to remake it.
@simplifygardening
@simplifygardening 5 жыл бұрын
The rails are the upper portion of the sides, I didnt add the 6mm gap at the bottom as its not required bees never go there unless you split the hive and then you want to be putting the brood on at an angle and twisting anyway. As far as the dimentions I did mention I have a set of plans that I am happy to send out.. Infact I have sent it out to over a 100 people so far.

@@simplifygardening In both instances you are increasing the surface area where faces come into contact with each other so you are making your life more difficult when these faces become heavily propolised. The frames will be more difficult to remove/slide and the boxes more difficult to separate. That's why I would include rails and maintain the gap at the bottom.

@simplifygardening
@simplifygardening 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, Eddie, this is the problem if you wish to expand. I have built 34 brood boxes I'm not using supers as it means buying different sized frames, by having one size fits all it makes things much cheaper, plus a brood of honey is like 2 supers. It has cost me around 350 to build all of these brood boxes plus paint. prob another 150 to build floors and crown boards and roofs. so I have enough for 15 hives with double brood here for 500 quid. Also will last longer. So each full hive has only cost around £33.50 each total. The quality of most of it is much better than you will buy You will see two hives I'm setting up in a week or so, they have been painted with fibreglass resin so are totally waterproof so should last a very long time too.

I make my hives from ply aswell. My process: 1) Cut the ply down into 460 and 424mm strips 2) Paint the strips 3) Cut the height 225 and 205mm 4) Drill holes 5) Put together I find it to be easier to paint the strips of ply rather than when it’s all put together. I also cut the grooves and angle cuts on full 2400mm timber, paint it then cut it down into 424mm lengths.
