In this video i'll take you on a tour of my small single car garage workshop and show you how I built it up on a very tight budget using second hand tools and salvaged cabinets and materials. You'll see how I organise my space, what I like about the workshop and what I'm planning to change.
Building a workshop on a budget is definitely within everyones wheelhouse. Thinking about where you can salvage materials and storage and then finding second hand tools online means you can build a workshop on a budget.

Your *Cobweb Collection* is truly impressive! 8:25 🕸️ I love the way they look so randomly placed and homely in their natural setting. You can never have too many spiders! 🕷️🕷️🕷️

Thanks, I’ve been working on the collection for many years now and add to it each year. The biggest problem is coming up with names for all the spiders 😂

@@lionandbear@lionandbear I tend to call my garage spiders "Spidey" - not very original but easy to remember! Our local curious woodlice are all named "Creature Feature". Luckily, they tend to congregate outside the garage as they like a bit of damp. Did I mention that I have a pet seagull named "Gertie"! 😂

Brilliant video, thank you! I'm in the very early days of getting into woodworking, setting up my own workshop, also in a single car garage, also with a knackered garage door... This was really helpful to see how you've utilised the space and stillable to make great projects without spending ridiculous amounts on every tool under the sun! Cheers!

Nice! And good to see that you're happy with the salvaging and secondhand materials and tools. I'd sacrifice one of the cabinets and fill it with drawers, so you can have all your consumables, bits and small bobs in one place, you have the space for it
@lionandbear
@lionandbear Жыл бұрын
I 100% agree. I want to build at least one more drawer unit as they’re so handy for smaller items and stops them getting lost in amongst everything. I think a set of quite shallow drawers with one or two ‘normal’ depth drawers would be good.

@@lionandbear Drawers are the best. In my last shop I had everything on the wall and a few drawers. Moved to another house, with a 2 car garage, Now I have everything in drawers. A big toolchest (present from my wife), salvaged the 5 big drawers from an Ikea Pax wardrobe, I found two really cool small vintage dentist drawer cabinets and I built the all-in-one workbench from Paoson with another 6 drawers, for a grand total of: 42 drawers🤣 And my small parts are in separate bins, not in drawers.. I'm as disorganized as they come, this really helps me get some much needed clarity in my head when I'm in my workshop. The only downside is cleaning and clearing the chaos...

Best part of your shop is Molly. Can’t have a good shop without a shop dog. The only problem I have with my one year old pocket Beagle is she manages to pick things up the second they hit the floor . She will take anything and turn it into a chew toy 🤣. I do like the slide out for the miter saw, brilliant idea. Nice presentation young man you get 👍🏼👍🏼

Thanks for your kind words. Molly only goes for dropped items if they’re food, otherwise she’s usually pretty good to be fair.

Hi Ben, my husband is the wood working loon but I watch the occasional video with him and yours gave me a laugh. Derek lol!! Anyway I’m a glass artist and I’ve fallen in love with the little arched frame from the pulpit. Would you be willing to sell one?
@lionandbear
@lionandbear Жыл бұрын
Thanks! I'm currently not sure how many of the arches i'm going to use as we already made some bits using them that were given to the church we salvaged it from and as such I've not got as many left. If I dont use them all when I eventually get my project built then I'll give you a shout and we can sort out getting one to you 😃

I'm just converting my garage to a workshop. I also have a dog called Molly. I've started buying more tools and boy it adds up because you need a different tool for everything and the good stuff is expensive. I need to build a modular workbench so I can move them about as my workshop evolves.
@lionandbear
@lionandbear Жыл бұрын
Every workshop needs a Molly! The only advice I’d give about a modular workbench is that they seem like a great idea but if the tools are difficult to get to or if the space ends up being taken up by a project then you’ll find you don’t end up using those tools. Let me know if you come up with any good ideas for your garage workshop that might be good for mine too though!

@@lionandbear Half my single garage has gym equipment so until I sell it I have half a garage. So figure I'll create one bench. Then a second which I'll modify for a table saw I just bought. Then when space allows I can do a third. This is the video that gave me the idea. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aYS0nZSliseEetE

Ok. I think I just found my new best friend! I, too, work on a budget and use reclaimed lumber almost exclusively. Which LED lights did you use? Seriously need to upgrade my single strip, any tips? Also did you install the sockets yourself and did it need a new ring circuit?

@lionandbear Жыл бұрын
The lights were some random ones off eBay mate. I don’t have the links for them anymore unfortunately though. Cheap and cheerful though. I already had a few sockets so just tagged on a few more to key places. I’m going to probably add a couple more at some point and will get my electrician friend to come and sort out any dodgy bits that aren’t up to code lol

Nice set up! Just curious what your opinion is on the Silverline bandsaw? I don't do a huge amount of woodwork, but i still think a badsaw would be quite handy....
@lionandbear
@lionandbear Жыл бұрын
I actually sold my bandsaw mate. I did a video on it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/o5-neGNpi5aYebssi=DzKXlvLHXuqqbJUO Personally it’s not the right tool for me. If I was going to buy something like that again I’d either get a much bigger and more substantial bandsaw for resawing and bigger jobs etc or would get a scroll saw for intricate curves etc. It all depends on the types of projects you do though. The silverline machine worked well to be fair though and didn’t have any problems.

@@lionandbear Thanks that's much appreciated..I have a single garage like yourself, but it's full of crap to the point it's unusable at the moment, but I would love a small work space in there. At present, I have no real desire to do larger projects, so I would be happy if I could get a small work shop set up in just half of it...Next spring / summer I want to put a small garden store/shed in the back garden and that will allow me to move out the lawnmower, strimmer, and cushions from the garden furniture which in itself will be a good start... I have a good selection of hand power tools, plus a bench top drill and grinder...I was hoping to add a mitre saw, a band saw and a bench top orbital sander.... At the moment it's all still a bit of a dream, but I will get there...
@lionandbear

That’s how I started out and slowly but surely I’ve kicked most of the garden and kids stuff out! A shed is next on my list too so I can kick everything else out!
