How I Built My Own Basketball Scoreboard (From Scratch!)

Hi again!
This is a video showcasing one of my older yet more ambitious projects; a fully functional basketball scoreboard! Because professional scoreboards are incredibly expensive, I decided to build my own. It turned out quite well in my opinion, and features almost all the qualities of a professional scoreboard for less than a tenth of the price.
Hope you enjoy! :)

Hey! I haven't checked parts prices in a long while but off the top of my head I would say between 400-500 for parts and labor. If that interests you, shoot me an email collwentzi@gmail.com

Hi Collin. Great work, congratulations! I'm doing a similar project. Do you have the final project for light diffusers? Could you share it?
@CollinWentzien
@CollinWentzien Жыл бұрын
Hi Guilherme, Excited to hear you are working on a similar project! Unfortunately I do not have the file for the diffusers, but you can find all other files on my GitHub linked in the description. If you want to make them and 3D print them yourself, I would suggest using the diffuser cutout from the scoreboard Illustrator file, importing it as a sketch into your preffered CAD program (Fusion 360, Onshape, etc.) and then extruding it to the thickness of the scoreboard (mine was 1/4 inches). I printed my diffusers with white PLA with 0% infill and that seemed to work the best. Hope this helps!

Hi Collin..it is really informative video. I was wondering you might want to share the wiring for all the led lights, sorry I am not good in reading schematic diagrams .
@CollinWentzien
@CollinWentzien Жыл бұрын
Hi Rolando, Glad you enjoyed the video! I'll try to post a more detailed picture of the wiring for the lights within this next week. For now, the way I did it was attach the +5v pin on the LED to the power supply power, the GND on the LED to BOTH the Arduino ground pin and the power supply ground, and the DIN (data in) pin on the LED to digital pin 3 on the Arduino. Hope that helps :)

Super impressive design and execution! How did you make the faceplate for the keypad?
@CollinWentzien
@CollinWentzien 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! For the keypad overlay, I just printed out a keypad design I made onto regular paper, and then laminated and cut the paper, which gives it its glossy appearence. Hope that helps :)

HI Nice project, very interesting. The digits that make up the numbers are made up of two WS2812B LEDs per segment, can they be enlarged from 2 LEDs to 4 LEDs per segment?
@CollinWentzien
@CollinWentzien Жыл бұрын
Hi! Hope you enjoyed the video. The digits can definitely be enlarged to 4 LEDs per segment, just make sure you change the arrays that store the digit combinations and also use an appropriate power supply. The one I used in the video was 5V 20A which should still be fine for more LEDs but you may want to use a 30 or even 40 amp one.

Ciao ho ripreso in mano questo progetto, e secondo me hai fatto un errore nello schema, stai alimentando NRF24L01 a 5V, questo modulo va alimentato a 3,3V non a 5V come scrivi tu.
@CollinWentzien
@CollinWentzien 2 ай бұрын
Hi! The nRF24L01 module I used has a converter built in to decrease the voltage from 5V to 3v3. However, if yours doesn't have that converter then I would suggest running it straight off of the arduino's 3v3 rail.

There are multiple scoreboard manufactures. Do they know your making these? What makes yours different than the ones being used at schools today?
@CollinWentzien
@CollinWentzien Жыл бұрын
Hi Jeff! Hope you enjoyed the video. I haven't reached out to any manufacturers yet as this was more of a "fun" project, but it's definitely not a bad idea and I may consider doing that in the not so distant future. As for what makes it different, the biggest different is what is offered for the price. This scoreboard, at under $400, includes a wireless controller and industry-grade horn, while similar scoreboards at that price range don't come with either. Scoreboards with those features start at around $1000, and while they are higher quality and professionally manufactured, I find it's more fun (and cost effective!) to just build your own. Plus, you learn a ton on the way which can also be applied to more professional scoreboards. Sorry for the long explanation -- hope that helps!

@@CollinWentzien thanks for replying. Not being negative. Also your size of your scoreboard dont think would be right for even a high school gym. If this is what you want to do. cool stuff... im also working with a nrf24l01 module, but i have a problem. how can use ky-002 to control 7segment using nrf24l01.?
@CollinWentzien
@CollinWentzien Жыл бұрын
Using an Arduino you should be able to send and receive data with the nrf24L01 the same way I did in this project. You just need a way to interpret the ky-002 module, then transform that data into something the nrf module can send, and then receive and decode that data on the other end and display it on a 7 segment display.

how to make the shot clock sir?
@CollinWentzien
@CollinWentzien Жыл бұрын
Hi Clyde, you should be able to hook up multiple receivers to one transmitter as long as they're on the same channel (ex. "00001"). From there display the time and add a secondary clock to the code to act as the shot clock.
