Hi guys!
I have had a few requests for how to colour grass, once again it has taken me a while to get round to recording it, but it is here now! I show the technique I use in the book Country Charm by Teresa Goodridge.
As always, I have used Faber Castell Albrecht Dürer pencils, wet and dry - you can match up the colours exactly with the Polychromos. And I have used some paint pens to add some detailing at the end. I specifically use the Tooli-art paint pens, but you can use any paint pens you like.
Hope you enjoy the video and find it interesting!
Until next time…
Happy colouring!

Hi Shelly, you always make sense when you’re explaining something. Your use of color is why your work is always gorgeous or stunning. Isn’t it frustrating when you can’t think of the right word but I knew exactly what you meant lol. Shelly, you are a genius with color, that grass is gorgeous and I love the dots from the acrylic paint pens! You inspire me to get better every time I watch one of your videos. Thank you so much for sharing your talent! 🤗💖

Hi Shelly, I recently acquired the full set of Albrecht Durer and wonder what you use to sharpen them? I have a fairly safe electric (Jarlink) which I am thinking I will use for the initial sharpening, pulling them before they get super sharp to preserve as much as possible, and later will use a handheld for sharpening as I color. What works for you?
@shelscolouringjourney
@shelscolouringjourney Жыл бұрын
Hi Carole! I hope you are enjoying the ADs as much as I do! I use an electric sharper for them these days, to the point I can't use it anymore. Then I go on to use my Dahle 133. When they are too small to fit in that too, I use a small KUM handheld sharpener till I have almost no pencil left. Hope this helps 🤗💗

Hi Shell can you use polychromos with water or should I use Caran d' Ache water Soluble? Love the video

So just to clarify, you use your mid tone on shadows first, then your light tone on whole area, then enhance highlights again with your dark tone?

Hey Shel! I have an idea for a video! I've noticed that the only pencils in my Prismas that I have never used except to swatch them are the 3 metallics and the 3 neons, so if you have any ideas for how to get some use out of them, maybe you could make a video about it! If not, I totally understand! I've just been thinking about that and thought I'd throw the idea out there!
@waymire01

I use the bronze quite a lot, it's a very unique brown hue, and it's not shiny enough to really be noticeable once combined with other colors. The others can be used by simply mixing them with other colors, or as accents. I recently saw a lovely dragon done with neon pink, blue and a dark purple. The pink went down first and the other colors added the shading, so in the end the pink was only in the highlight areas but it added vibrancy to the entire dragon. A stroke or two of the silver can be added to a "proper" shaded silver object just to give a bit of shine/reflected light here or there, it's also lovely on water. I recently used the AD gold to do sheet music on a page, it's not a very good color actually especially used wet, it tends to almost be washed away to a weird brownish tinge... but it gave a perfect "old paper" appearance. I bet it would also be good for those papery casings that some flowers have left over at the bottom of the blossom.

@@waymire01 Yea I think the neons are easier to think of ideas for how to use them. I was thinking that the neons would look cool if used as a highlight in potion bottles. I never thought to use the silver when coloring water though! I'll have to try that out next time I'm coloring water! I don't have any water soluble pencils but I'd like to get the set of Albrecht Durer pencils. Well I do have a small set of water soluble pencils but they're cheap and you can't use them by coloring on your page and then activating with water. They do alright if you take color from the tip with a water brush or color on a palette and activate them on the palette. I just started coloring in February so I don't have a lot of pencil sets...yet! I have the Prismas and the Polychromos, and then I have a couple of budget friendly sets like Castle Art and Kalour, and also both of the Black Widow skin tone sets. But anyway, thank you for sharing your ideas for the metallic and neon pencils! I bet that dragon was gorgeous!

@@silvers_ink I would encourage anyone starting out to invest in a few tried and true artist quality open stock lines that each do something different, and not collect a million different sets especially the ones you can't replace without buying a whole new box. I wound up getting rid of all my non open stock sets.. it's just annoying and much more money in the end because you will use certain colors at a much higher rate than others. Prisma and Polys are great, and they are the flagship opaque soft wax for "smooshing" and transparent smooth oil for layering workhorses. I bought the AD's because I had previous experience with them, the cost is reasonable, they work wet and dry, and they come in 120 colors. Between the three you really can do anything. I did add a Brutfuner macaron set to my Polys and really love having the pastels, but I'll replace those with the real thing (holbiens) as I use them up. The Carandache are just as good but the cost of the full sets is just too high for me. I have a few to play with (I have a few of almost every artist brand there is because I just have to try them all) but I want a nice big set for serious work. The next thing I would suggest is a nice big set of alcohol markers, a good selection of acrylic paint pens, and some high quality metallic/glitter gel pens... and of course a Dahle 133 sharpener, that thing is magic. It's very easy to get caught up in collecting and spend more time buying pencils than coloring. If you compare brands side by side in the end the colors are all so similar.. it's just more of the same over and over.
@silvers_ink
@silvers_ink Жыл бұрын
@@waymire01 Yes, I would agree with that! I appreciate all of your advice/suggestions! Thank you for taking the time to give your feedback! I figured out right away to get the Dahle 133! I started coloring in February when my hubby bought me the set of Prismas and I thought I'd get the Prisma round cylinder sharpener thinking that it should be the best for Prismas......wrong! So I immediately watched some videos and everyone was suggesting the Dahle 133 so I bought it that same day! I started out with a set of Castle Art pencils because I was being cheap and thought I was saving myself some money, but I quickly realized that was a mistake, so my hubby was like, here just take my credit card and get you a set of the Prismas! I was so happy! But I learned a great lesson, which is that you get what you pay for! I can buy the cheap brand of cereals, but when it comes to art supplies, you don't wanna go for the cheap stuff! I did buy the Kalour macaron set and I like using them but I don't use them very often. They're not bad for being a budget friendly set. I paid $20 for them on Amazon. Eventually I will get the Holbein's but for now I have Prismas and Polys, and once I get the set of AD then I will start saving up for the Holbein's. I also have some Wink of Stella glitter brush pens, and white, gold, and silver Signo gel pens. As far as water soluble items, I have the full set of King Art gel sticks because again, I was being cheap and didn't want to pay for the neocolor ii! Honestly, the King Art gel sticks aren't too bad, but you can't color with them and then activate them like you can with neocolor ii. I have to put them on a palette and use my water brushes. Oh I almost forgot, I have black, white, silver, and gold Poscas and Faber-Castell gelatos(metallic set of 12), both of the Black Widow skin tone sets, and one of the sets of Gelly Roll glaze gel pens. So I think I have a pretty good stash of supplies considering that I only started coloring at the end of February. After buying those Castle Art soft touch and not being happy with them, and buying a stack of coloring books that I ended up hating, I decided that I wasn't going to buy anything without watching videos, reading reviews, and getting all of the info I can find before buying! That has been working out great for me! It cost me about $100 or so down the drain, but I finally learned my lesson lol!
@waymire01
@waymire01 Жыл бұрын
@@silvers_ink Try the KingArt gel crayons dry with a palette and a blending brush.. like you would use with distress ink.. they do beautiful blended backgrounds that way and will set up if you let them dry overnight.
