Yep, thought the same after 3 seconds. Not saying he could have saved it with a proper grip. But there is simply no way you can recover snap oversteer when you're holding the wheel like that...

Came here to comment on the very same thing. You might be able to get away with this style of gripping the steering wheel on a motorway, going in a straight line and it might actually feel more comfortable to hold that way, but it is not safe to do so and this guy learned his lesson the hard way. Shame!

Several warnings. You're turning the wheel through the initial understeer. Possibly a lift-off induced oversteer, to put the final nail in. Well done for putting this out there and your honesty. Easy to say now, but tuition with a lower powered car, on a smaller track, is something we should have all done first.

This hurt my feelings. I have a 4C for 7 years already and drive it on the ring a lot of times. It is extremely dangerous, because the 4C is a difficult car to drive fast at such a track. On a GP track it is way more easy. Of course I could say a lot about steering wheel grip, the way corners are being taken, etc. but everybody needs to learn sometimes. You took the hard lesson and thats sad. I hope you can enjoy a great car soon again.

The first thing you have to do is learn to take the wheel, the second thing before going to the Nordschleife is to learn the circuit in a simulator or at least before entering with that car, rent one with a coach to have more knowledge of the circuit and to help you, make some corrections to make you safer. It's a shame how your dream ended, but you fought for it

Very sorry for your loss and thanks a million for sharing your experience. This video deserves more views and should serve to many as a warning. The Nurb is an outdated track with little margin for error. I've been tracking my Lotus Exige for over a year now: Zandvoort, Lemans, Mas du clos, Dijon Prenois...but i stay away from the Nurb for the very reason shown in these video. Take care and hope you ll eventually come back to a (proper) race track

Gosh, you have my sympathies. And respect. Hope your knee is really trouble-free. I crashed my bike racing at Zandvoort in ‘87, hit the tire wall and dislocated my hip. It still bothers me after all those years, but I have no regrets. And neither should you! As others have also said, in life you will always regret most the things you didn’t do. These days I do some track days on 4 wheels (Porsche 996), also on the Ring, and it’s absolutely awesome! I encourage you to find your way back there, it’s so much worth the effort and sacrifice.

I find it absolutely insane that people take their car on the most difficult and dangerous race track in the world, without having practiced it in a sim for a few hundred laps first. It's so cheap compared to just a minor incident, and when you get there you will be prepared enough to not be surprised by how sharp a corner is etc. I have been there myself with an i30N, but I had done probably a thousand laps on it in iRacing before I went there, and I basically knew every inch of it. It translated really well. I still started extremely carefully, and I knew where the scary places were, and which corners I was most likely to mess up and had extra respect for those.

Huge respect for putting this video out!! That must have been hard. And I can't imagine the bill afterwards. I think everything has been said already, but having a fast car isn't the same as driving it fast around a track, 100x especially on the Nordschleife. To be fast you need to drive the racing lines! Anything else will ruin your laptimes but also upset your car. That's what happened here. I've driven it hundreds of laps on the Sim (AC) and know it from heart but driving it for real in a sub optimal car surrounded by "mad men" is very overwhelming or even downright scary if you don't want to crash. This is not a game, there's no reset button. I wish there was. Good luck to you sir.

There is no shame in crashing and owning your mistakes. I’ve worked for Alfa as an Instructor and drove the 4C on many occasions. The car is beautiful on the outside, but the suspension setup and the driving characteristics are, to at least, „The beats and the beauty“. While doing that job, I was offered to drive modified version with harder front springs, slightly stiffer ARB, which made a huge difference. Not to say, I nearly crashed one myself with the European CMO on the passanger seat, because the snap oversteer is very hard to manage if you’re not aware of it. Glad you recovered from the crash and there are hopefully no longterm consequences of that. Greetings from a fellow Berliner 😉

I can feel this. Had an Opel Speedster Turbo for 11 years, in the end with nearly 400 PS. Much earlier, after only some months of ownership, I visited the Nordschleife with some friends and with the Speedster. It was a wet, foggy autumn day. Soggy and wet, track partially had leaves on the tarmac, not good conditions at all. But I was there and this was the only moment I was able to drive the Nordschleife at least one time in my life (I live in Berlin, too, so also very far off from GH). And so I did. Ticket was some 17 Euros back in the days, bought one, jumped into the car and drove. At Hocheichen, the last right-hand corner before the straight to Flugplatz, I nearly lost the rear end. After that, it was a very slow lap, some 14 minutes in total. There is a photograph showing me at the Brünnchen entry with my left elbow on the left door window sill. You get the point. What a shame for the beautiful 4C. I love these kind of cars. For me the early Lotus Elises, the 4C and the Alpine 110S are the essential driver cars. Now, 57 years old, I still miss the times with my mid-engine lightweight sports car. My current fun car being a TT RS Mk.3 I still get a weird itch in the back every time I see 110S driving around. These are proper driving cars and I feel a strong connection to those who know.

No judgement here, just an observation. Most of your close calls are symptomatic: you want to be fast so you brake late and end up getting out slowly of the curve (or out of the track). I guess this is what most people do when trying to know a race track and improve lap time. It's always more efficent (and cost saving 😬) to do the opposite: enter slowly and try to optimise the exit. However, you were brave to send it on the ring, this is a very intimidating race track!

sorry mate, but that was tough to watch. Accelerating mid-Adenauer like that means you should have watched more videos or done more laps on the sim, it's one of the first things you learn, to wait wait wait and stay wide until the tightest part. Also your arms and hands looked too stiff. I know it has non-assisted steering, but I've driven an Exige V6 and you shouldn't have to hold it for dear life. Also 9 and 3 are better hand positions, give you better feeling and range of motion (see Casey Putsch video "Why the Corvette C8 steering wheel is idiotic garbage and what it should be"). But very glad you´re ok!

Respectfully disagree RE. the steering. The geometry of these cars (particularly the lack of castor) mean that the car is constantly trying to follow cambers. Although improved with aftermarket geometry spacers, the problem persists. When I drive mine fast I find myself grabbing onto the wheel HARD as this is the only way to deal with these steering affects. It's something you get used to but certainly strenuous...

Definitely a costly mistake to make and everyone seems to make it at that bend. Plain and simple, turned in far too early, tried to make the turn and put the power on over the crest and away it goes. Ok steering grip wrong, but did you go to the Ring without even knowing the track? You can spent hundreds of hours on the sim to learn at least turn patters. Most of them are blind, so if you know when they close and when they open the road it's important Also if you notice that you are doing so much mistakes (they can happen for sure!!) Why don't you step back a bit and just try to re learn from basics? :) no need to push like a Pro if you see that you are risking it

3:56 ok, you entered the corner too fast, but you are in the middle of the track, all the wheels slip slightly, you press the brake and the rear end starts to rotate,.....you've already passed more than half a turn, you should have survived the rest, instead of the brake, you should have given a little gas so that all the wheels continue to slip equally and probably would have come to the left edge of the track without turning the car. this can be practiced on a go-kart when entering a corner quickly: too much gas and you will fly off the track in parallel, too little gas will cause the back end to go away, the correct amount of gas will cause the car to skid gently with all wheels to the edge of the track. the brake works exclusively in the way that it transfers inertia to the front wheels, and the gas acts in both directions, by applying the gas, the inertia is transferred to the rear wheels, by taking away the gas, to the front wheels, by precisely dosing the gas, the right slip balance can be achieved

I know others talk about hand position on the steering wheel, but that's a real problem, just watching you change gear with your little finger was fun, but technically that hand position is just wrong, you have less control of the car because you have less precision and range of motion, also looking at the trajectories of the car in the video says that you don't have enough experience on the nurburgring, next time try to go slower learn the track watch some videos of the nurburgring before completely sending your 100k euro car, if you had your hands in the right position, maybe you still had the 4c now. I know I was a bit harsh in the comment but I think you should have expected comments like that so anyway I'm very sorry, accidents can happen but after a fall you have to get up hope you will return to the Nurburgring.

Respects for posting this, especially knowing that there will be hard criticism. But your 4C, it had the very, *very* rare and sought after Akrapovic center exhaust system!!! Its so rare, it cannot be "aftermarket" installed as the whole rear end, rear bumper, whole exhaust system all the way from headers is different compared to normal 4C. Damn brother.

Thanks for the frank video. I hope you recovered. So sad about the awesome 4C😢. It's the most dangerous track in the world, especially with a mid-engine car: even a 911 is easier. I took a lot of my cars to the Nordschleife, but never my Boxster S or Cayman S; just too worried about crashing, or the cost of even a small impact. And Brünnchen is probably the place with the most crashes, at least among newbies.

Very cool video, and the most important thing is that you're alright! Felt for that 4C though...

I am glad you are okay and you didnt get hurt, but looking at the driving before the crash, i am not surprised you ended up in the wall. Seems there is a lack in track knowledge, as well as lacking experience and skill driving a car fast. Steering wheel grip, turn in points, entry speeds, racing line and general inputs are all very, well, not so good. You did upload this here and im sure you were aware of the possible criticism, even if it sounds harsh. I think you need it though.

Auww..I'm sorry for you, Stefan! Hope your knee will get better soon. It's a shame of such a beautiful car. I hope you did have an extra insurance for track driving. It's easy for everybody here to say you did something wrong. The best helmsmen work on shore!

Good video as an ex 4C owner I am bummed watching this. Happy you did not suffer permanent damage. Sad end for an epic automobile, but you know if you damage the "tub" the car is scrapped.😮‍💨

So many red flags here but one brilliant bit of advice I had from friends before I went first time, is go home with at least one lap still loaded on your ticket. Your “last lap before I go home” could have been your “first lap of your second season” - always quit while you are ahead, re-watch the videos, reflect when you are back home.

This is a perfect example why you should invest in a force-feedback steering wheel and practice in a simulation before setting foot in a real race track.
