I can totally relate, sometimes I spend longer trying to get a color scheme than painting, (and I’m a slow painter). Lately I’ve just been sitting down and slapping what I think will look good on, it definitely helps a lot.

I think the hardest part for me the complimentary extra bits. The main one or two colors come easy but getting a good color for the leather, trims, etc can really trip me up. What I have enjoyed lately though is to take a look at existing schemes and find something that really stands out and then tweak to my liking. I did that for my Necrons where I loved the silver, red, gold and white but instead of green energy weapons I really wanted to try my hand at a vibrant orange.

This is also one of my favorite parts of the Hobby; I sorely miss the 3rd edition Codices where it looks like everyone in the studio got a model and made their own scheme (The Tau book was especially good for this). Honestly, some of my paint schemes come directly from there! Another place I look is across Universes: My Votann paint scheme is HEAVILY inspired by the Kharadron Barak Nar colors. Even down to noting that one of the stripe colors on the skyships is black, giving me leeway to use it as an accent on vehicles, or a squad marking as needed. Other times it just comes down to a color I like. Why are my actual Kharadron mainly Lupercal Green? Because I like Lupercal green and I didn't have an army that used it yet.

I feel really silly because I've painted so many test models and never thought to just put paints on the palette next to each other. I usually use the test model to refine everything, but I often paint a color - like orange - and then paint over it if I don't like the tone. Simple tip that I think will make a big difference for me :)

Seeing the void knights always makes me smile. One of the things I remember being taught was varying the vibrancy of your color choices. Green and Red are great complimentary colors but with the same intensity, can look very Christmasy. But if you mute one and make the other brighter, you lose that effect. I liked the blue as your spot color but thought it being so bright made it compete with the orange. So looking at a more muted or grey blue would have been my move.

I remember my first custom scheme was a group of Vampire Counts Skeletons and a Vampire. I loved the idea of using a royal purple to contrast with the light white bones and show off a very well-to-do Vampire Lord. Was so much fun and I think I spent just as much time thinking up a background for the army as I did painting it.

I was gifted a Combat Patrol: Drukhari for my birthday a few months back. I knew I didn't want to paint a "darkly colored" Dark Eldar army, but I also had a hard time nailing down a solid starting point. After some experimentation with alliteration, I settled on my color scheme: Black, Blue, Bone, Brass, and a bit of Blood". Felt good to put such a bright/cold color scheme on such a dark army.

I've been watching your tutorials for years now, and I don't intend to mean this as a dig, but one of the reasons why I value your advice above anyone else's is because in your showcases, I know if I really look, I can find minor imperfections. As someone who will never be "golden demon" worthy, to know a master like you does this, removes the anxiety I have when I get to the "stop painting and move on to the next mini" stage. Cheers Duncan

With around 4 years into the hobby, I'm still a very inexperienced painter. So last year when I joined a competition to build and paint a new army over a certain time and have a tournament with them at the end I needed to come up with my first own colour scheme. I decided to build Necrons and, as you said, sometimes it's really just a colour you want to use and for me it was "Thousand Sons Blue" because I really like the colour and started to work around that. I went for an overall icy theme inspired by "The frozen Plague" scheme of Death Guard I saw a while ago. I use Leadbelcher as undercoat with heavy washing of Drakenhof Nightshade to darken it down and give it a blueish colours. Thousand Sons Blue for all the glowing effects and parts of Tesla and Gauss weapons, eyes, melee weapons or even the wings of the Necron croissants. Then an overall heavy drybrush with White Scar to make the metal look frosted and the blue parts iced. It's quite simple scheme with only a few colours but it's a good start that doesn't scare a beginner like me and the people at the tournament liked it too which was a great feeling. :)

I agree with your planning technique prior to actually painting. I didn't want my Emperor's Children to be plain black and pink so I planned to integrate concepts relevant to Slaanesh and our own world, such as greed, need and chase to have more and more, as well as a lot of opulence. It also allows me for way more freedom with ideas. I had a wild idea of converting Henry the 8th from the Glutos Orscollion kit to represent greed, gluttony etc, one day I might get round to it Lol. When I found my first functional colour scheme I really fell in love with the hobby. Made a successor blood angels chapter called Penitent Knights of Baal. I used dark reaper (citadel) for unpainted power armour, Mephiston red shoulder pads and retributor armour for detailing. It works really nicely with codex adherent schemes too - yellow helmets on close combat and blue for dev squads; I was really happy with how they definitely look like blood angels but a little less flashy. I don’t field any sanguinary guard or gold armoured characters as fluff wise they renounce the artistry of the blood angels to focus themselves on purging their gene seed of the red thirst.

The video I’ve been waiting for! Bought a couple of different sci fi minis because I wanted to paint them myself without going of a pre made color scheme. BUT I soon realized that creating a color scheme is quite difficult and a slow process for me, I mean, I did almost fail art in school and I suck at visualizing colors on grey plastic. Something that helps me a lot is using online color wheels. I don’t necessarily stick to exactly the nuances it suggests but more use it to see how colors look together and to get a broader idea of which color look nice together. Very helpful, Duncan and team!

When I got into the hobby I picked up the Battle for Macragge starter set, and made my main army Ultramarines. I loved their paint scheme, and when I returned to the hobby at the beginning of 8E, I picked them back up. But I wanted the scheme to be different. I didn't know how to go about that so it was a slow growing process with individual changes: bone-white shoulder pads for sergeants or characters, burgundy for tabards or cloths, bronze melee weapons, different colored helmets for different battlefield roles, etc. But the army really came together when I was inspired by a Babylonian stele covered in cuneiform. All those bone pauldrons became papyrus covered in cuneiform. It changed the entire theme from off-brand Ultramarines into an ancient Babylonian/Mediterranean custom chapter. The recent release of the Black Templars caused me to add a secondary paint scheme of more purples and reds to denote internal chapter struggles between pragmatic or zealous forms of warfare. I'm sure something else will come along that will add another layer to the army. Its good to remember that making a cohesive paint scheme when you first pick up the brush isn't necessary. Feeling inspiration from the outside world, or in the middle of a painting session is normal, and I would highly recommend it.

A number of years ago I created my own Eldar Craftworld, the Cravic Craftworld, with totally unique base colour. I started out in 2nd edition, and in those days where was frequent use of red to yellow blending (such as Lascannon barrels, or cables on Chaos Black Legion)... and I adopted that into the theme of my army. Games Workshop have never produced their own paint, they subcontract that to a paint supplier and provide them under the Citadel brand. In the 90's when I first started, Citadel's paint came from the Coat de Arms company. I wanted something completely different for my Eldar, so rather than picking a specific colour from the Citadel list, I mixed 'Jade Green' and 'Hawk Turquiose' together to give a more greeny turquoise shade. The helmets are black with dots for stars all over, the facemasks blend from red to yellow, with Enchanted blue eye's, and the guns are black with fluorescent orange barrels, which really makes them pop. The Eldar have lots of gems, but I decided to keep the gem colours very limited, with deep orange gems on anything that's turquoise, and blue gems on the orange guns. In order to keep a consistant colour, highlighting and shading throughout the whole army, I bought four pots of Jade Green and Hawk Turquiose from Coat De Arms, and pured them all into a jam jar. I then syphoned them back into their individual pots, but in one I added a little white for a general highlight, in another I added more white again for a very pale highlights. In another I added a little black for a pot of darker turquoise for shadows, and took a little of that, and create a shade from distilled water, a couple of drops of washing-up liquid to break the surface tension, and finally a couple of drops of airbrush flow improver (which helps it flow into the recesses without pooling stains. Here's some Storm Guardians I painted last week. drive.google.com/file/d/1NMorcCu3agtHtFz4cF7yfXq5fnz9hv4j/view?usp=share_link For Windrider/Skyrunner jetbikes, Vypers, War Walkers and skimmers, the tops are black with starscenes on them. Here's a couple of examples: Fire Prism: drive.google.com/file/d/1HN6Qu6oWltdITIhkUAx4tHno6hqdnj17/view?usp=share_link Autarch Skyrunner: drive.google.com/file/d/1Eqr3gORcxf9onvQDdKBBDog2OVj0QOAf/view?usp=share_link With the red to yellow theme, I followed the old Baharroth model and gave the wings of an Autarch a full rainbow of feathers. drive.google.com/file/d/1Qnjj-zCsiJuvo7rq__b0lQc3oFtVm7TB/view?usp=share_link I also themed him based on the current Aeldari codex. On a third Autarch, with a jump generator, I game the backpack a starscene nebula effect. drive.google.com/file/d/1--MTmFSZVjm9iRwEZ9b26F3pCN1ky8kI/view?usp=share_link For Aspect Warriors, I use the usual colours, Blue for Dire Avengers, Bone for Banshees, Green for Scorpions, etc... but I add elements that tie them to the craftworld, such as sashes and red to yellow facemasks. Overall, my Eldar of my favourite army, and as such get lavish attention when compared to other armies.

I love this! One of the cases that I did this myself was when the White Scar supplement came out. I enjoyed diving into the lore of my favorite founding chapter, and one section in it stood out to me, when they talked about some of the various Primaris founding chapters. The name Astral Bears kept coming up, but no art, iconography or color schemes existed so in that I found my inspiration. I had custom decals for the chapter logo made, and invented a white and ice blue color scheme inspired by my other favorite spirit bears in gaming, the Clan Ghost Bear Mechwarriors. Ironically I have only painted a couple of them, but they really stand out in my display case. Friends always ask me about them since they look like nothing seen in books.

When I started to put thought into my paint schemes, it was with my Admech. I wanted to throw the usual dead and dreary forge world for a twist by having my force originate from a lively forest world, and that theme built my colors from the cloaks and armored bits up to the subdued faces with softly glowing red eyes under hoods. The process made painting dozens of light and mechanized infantry so much more fun with a vibe behind it.

I ended up going similar but darker than you with black armor (black templar), orange undersuit (gryph-hound orange) and red spot color on the weapon casings and visors (flesh tearers red). I haven't gotten past base coats yet, but I can't wait to see how they pop once I get onto washes and highlighting.

Really nice scheme! When I decided to do a successor chapter for the Dark Angels, I wanted to bring something from the first Legion into the scheme. Ended up with something really easy: The Pauldrons are black with a white rim, rest of the green wing is like the DA themselves. On vehicles I look for wide areas, where the black can separate several parts of green, the white chapter symbol is the third colour completing the scheme there. To separate Firstborn and Primaris from each other, the Details like the Aquila are Silver on the Firstborn and golden on the Primaris. Not that much of a difference at first, but really popping out on the field and giving a unique touch to my army. Also my Raven- and Deathwing are in a different colour scheme than the primogenitor chapter, so that's a thing, too. I'm at roughly 6k points fully painted at this stage. Thank you for all those great videos of yours, aways a motivation to get back to the table to paint! (Sorry for any mistakes, greetings from Germany!)

I used the rebel pilot colour scheme for my Ironhead Squat Prospectors and the new orange contrast paint is a great base colour for the cloth and massively speeds up the process when applying this scheme over a larger force.

Thank you for that video! it was a huge inspiration when I started making my Votann army. I went with a Deep Red/Royal Blue/Silver look for the hearthkyn warriors, because I felt they were very "imperialistic" in the way they do "business" on some planets. For the higher rank, like the Kâhl and the Theyn will be gold instead of silver.

Something I've found to be helpful when stuck trying to decide on a color scheme, is to look at professional sports teams, especially American football (pro or college) for Space Marines. They tend to spend millions in the development of their colors, and the players in full pads and helmets look the most like Space Marines, so you get an idea of how it would look.

This kind of thoughtful and thematic video is brilliant. It's the sort of thing that is missing in today's video on demand reality. The process and introspection of colour schemes is great. It hits a specific point. Also, maybe green for the visor, for the 'eyeglasses' alone.

Hey Duncan! Firstly, for a name for these Kin, perhaps the Orantis Mining Company? If they’re all dressed as industrial workers and grab weapons when needed, maybe it fits that they’re traders? Secondly, my colour scheme! I developed this with my older brothers Chaos Marines. His have a base of mid tone grey, with a purple right shoulder and left shin and yellow left shoulder and right shin. The purple and yellow were too much to put over all of the model, so the grey as a main colour balanced things. Now, his chaos warband is called the Last Castellans, so when I started getting Primaris Marines, I called mine the First Castellans. Mine have the same grey armour and yellow left shoulder, but the legs are left grey and the entire right arm is a brighter purple. In our narrative, mine were supposed to be the Primaris reinforcements to the Last Castellans but were made into their own Chapter once his turned traitor. I wanted the purple arm because they are the “right arm of the Emperor.” The reduced yellow makes it a spot colour and the purple as the secondary.

Definitely returning to this when i paint some spare marines and wanna experiment! I haven't really done any customization on my two mains (admech & necrons) just because i love the red cloak on tan and white, and the necrons' silver with iridescent green. But after seeing all the stuff with votann, where ppl are applying lego space sets and tmnt color schemes, and now this, it's really got me wanting to branch out!

For my Cadian Shock Troopers, I did red armor over white fatigues. This was initially just because I liked those colors, but eventually turned into a whole system of color coding. Medics got blue armor, combat engineers got orange armor with silver high-vis stripes and yellow helmets, officers got the infantry color scheme but reversed (red uniform, white armor) and so on

I’ve tried Googling things like ‘science fiction colour schemes’ or ‘cyberpunk colour schemes’ to get swatches of colours used in combination by designers and cinematographers. That’s given me some complicated schemes with lots of vibrant colours that still work together.

Sweet. I might try and use a darker shade of that orange to replicate the orange and black armoured marines from the Astartes teaser, who were busy ripping and tearing (until it is done) those termagants. I think the most helpful this advice will be is in coming up with a custom paint scheme for Titanicus legion. It's damned hard coming up with something original, especially with the level of quality titans deserve.

I love this. I don't even really know what to make of it because these days there are truly too many armies that interest me and not nearly enough time to paint even one of them! (Just finished an Astra Militarum, just under 2 years of painting, 2000 points, just in time to likely be delegitimized with a new codex XD ). Someone needs to work on a game that plays with 10 or less miniatures WITHOUT any expansions for 5+ years. But I know that is not how the gears of miniature game economics grind :)

My Votann army box was delayed by two days because of Hurricane Ian (I’m fine, don’t worry), so I was thinking of going for a stormy theme for them to reflect the circumstances that I got the army under. I was gonna go with a grey for the under suit, and dark blue for the armor, and (with the benefit of knowing what spot colors are) a vivid yellow for lights, visors, and energy stuff like plasma blades. This is a great vid and a good source of information for creating your own color schemes!

I use a mix of colour schemes for my ad-mech, the infantry were influenced by the NCR veteran rangers from Fallout New Vegas, brown leather coats, olive drab armour, and red lenses, I gave the coats orange linings too so there's a splash of colour, the vehicles came from my long years of military scale modelling, I used UK light mud (pale ish khaki green colour) with dark green over the top in a version of the 'cloud' camouflage pattern used on British trucks and transports during WWII, again with red lenses off white bits like legs for dunecrawlers and ironstriders

I color scheme I came up with by complete accident was for my Admech where I painted the long coats with Zandri dust, since I had a lot of it, and painted the metal bits with Leadbelcher all over a Chaos black base and it gave them a kinda of Jawa feel that made me dub them the "Scrap Legion"

My idea for the name of your League. I love the classic star wars rebellion color inspiration so we need something that references that. Based on the focus on industry in the LoV "Alliance" would be a perfect organizational description. Your reference picture showed Poe Dameron, whom I really like, so let's try to use part of his name but not make it too obvious. Your mention of Mining gear and work is an easy include, so then we have: "Damerik Mining Alliance". When you have enough inspiration these things just kind of create themselves :) Thanks for all your videos too, you're great Duncan :)
