I received a sizable inheritance in January. I struggled with this question. I invested most of the money over a 2-month period. I'm currently up 10% overall for the year, so I'd say that's a win. An important thing to consider is if you have a brokerage account that offers a cash holding fund making 4.5%+ yield, the cash is working for you at a good rate while you make decisions on what to invest in for higher returns.

A great question I feel many investors get stuck on before they start to actually invest. I must say it can be daunting, but the short answer is just start where you're comfortable as the good old saying goes, "time in the market is better than timing the market."

Ok young man, I’m going to take your advice and lump sum approximately 1/2 of my available cash now and then start DCA the rest over the next year. I’m retired and probably much older than the most of the people that follow your channel. I certainly agree with what you say and wish I had found your channel years ago. It would have saved me a lot of money and disappointment. Perhaps I will reach out to you in the future to discuss a couple of my issues. Keep up the good work.

I’ve done DCA and is king of investing. Difference is if an etf or stock drops 20% on the investment day,,, I double down my investment amount…. Wait until next investment date and resume or double down again. This accelerates the balance being in the market if it turns

Could we have a video on Banks vs Credit Unions? "If it seems too good to be true, it probably is", yet credit unions have some really high APYs and other benefits. So what is the catch? Is there one? Is it riskier to store your money in a credit union? What is the difference between them and banks? How does this all work?

I'm DCA a sum into the market over the next couple of years. Spent 25% of the cash starting my main ETF positions at the beginning of 2024. DCA the remaining 75% in equal amounts each month until the end of 2025. I try and catch a red day towards the end of the month if possible. If I haven't caught a red day by the last trading day in the month, I just go ahead and buy my preset monthly dollar amount then. Mainly VOO/SCHD/SCHG. A smaller percentage into SOXQ, XLK, DGRO, and COWZ. There is some overlap here, but it's within the same sectors of my portfolio that I have a set % allocated to.

I had this predicament and got a little greedy with it. Only started investing this year in late May. Markets were making all time highs time and again so I threw all my money in there at its peak in early July with a heavy focus on tech (Nvidia, SMH and QQQ). The second half of July was brutal and I was immediately in the red, then Black Monday happened and everyone was talking about recession and many of my stop losses hit and took me out of positions I didn't want to sell. I then decided to throw the cash i got back from sales into shorting the market just as it bounced back immediately. It's a mistake and gamble I'll never make again. In future, I'm still heavily in the red since my investments and will need a year and a half of solid growth to get back those losses and see green again. I'm working so much harder to make more money to try and build up enough cash so if another crash comes i can buy stocks and ETFs cheap.

@@NolanGouveia yes mate, I've cleared up a couple of black eyes quick with it. Add a bit of light pressure also. Have the cloth as hot as you can handle with out burning. Why not put the money in a brokerage, such as Fidelity. Have the account as a money market to take advantage of the interest rate. Inflation is low enough so the FED will start to lower rates. 3 months after the FED says its done lowering rates is the closest any of us can come to the bottom of the markets. As inflation rises again your investments will go up in value. When the FED again states inflation is to high that is your SELL signal. If you don't sell and lock in profits your investment values absolutely will drop because stocks with debt always drop and the lay off when the FED raises rates. A broker will tell you NOT to sell and to instead bonds , don't buy bonds , rather SELL and put it all in VMFXX govt bond money market soon to be paying 5% as a result of FED rate increases.

An almost guaranteed bottom is 3 months after the FED is done LOWERING rates. No can make a better guess than this its as close to the sure thing bottom as any of us can predict. This is the gas needle hitting EMPTY, the bottom of the tank right. But is it really the absolute bottom? Is there more gas in the car ? Maybe a tiny bit but we don't know how much or how far you can go on what's in the tank, so when the red light come on that is the bottom and that's when we act. So we call the RED LIGH empty and 3 months after the FED is done the preverbal bottom.

I have question for you Professor, I know you like SCHD, I know its very popular. We all know dividend growth is more important than high dividend yield. Not growing means dying. SCHD has stocks that dividends aren't growing , plus they decline in value, with huge debt. Example Verizon, Pfizer. VIG etf has high quality dividend growth stocks. What are your thoughts on schd containing "some" bad stocks?
@NolanGouveia
@NolanGouveia 7 күн бұрын
The S&P 500 has some companies that are still good but underperform for a while then snap out of it. Schd (and just about every other broad based etf) is the same way. VIG is good, yes, but it’s just a blend of schd and schg basically.

It is an age-old struggle. But as usual, you have perfect timing with this video. I'm in this situation currently. Here's what I'm doing... Regardless of the potential financial upside to a lump sum, which, in fact, would be simple, to me, simplification also includes not constantly wondering if I did the right thing. DCA smooths out that worry and wonder. Your examples were spot-on! So I’m putting 1/2 in and DCA the rest over time. That feels good to me. Thank you again.

Daily buying isn't exactly DCA; look to weekly or more to account for true changes. E.g. investing $24k over a month buying daily vs $4k+ buying weekly. The 24k is a lot to put in over such a short period and the stock could easily pull back in the next month. First ask yourself what the total size of the position is that u want in any particular stock or index and them divide that equally into buys over a period of time. E.g. Maybe u start with a 20% position in VOO, but then add 5% buys weekly over 2mo until you've reached your full position allocation.

You might immediately invest all of the 500k in a US treasury fund yielding at least 5% with basically no risk, then every month transfer 50k into an S&P500 fund/ETF.

why is there a problem with inversting 500K at once - even if the market goes down a day after 20% - it will eventually go up - sure it may take more time to get that profit - but we can't time the market - so just put your money there - and let it do it's thing

Given your insights on lump-sum investing versus dollar-cost averaging, if you received your paycheck today and had the flexibility to invest the entire amount, would you put it all into the market immediately, considering the current market volatility and global events, or would you prefer to spread the investment over days, weeks, or months? Just asking for clarification.

@@NolanGouveia There’s some confusion in your reply to my hypothetical question about paychecks and investing. When you talk about lump-sum investing in the video, you refer to scenarios like receiving a large inheritance or selling a property-where you have a significant amount of money all at once to invest. But my question was a bit different. I was asking about monthly paychecks and whether you would personally invest the entire paycheck as soon as you receive it, or if you’d prefer to spread it over a period of time given current market conditions. Paychecks aren't a lump sum like an inheritance; they're smaller, recurring amounts, so the strategy of investing a paycheck immediately is not the same as a true 'lump sum' strategy that you described in the video. In other words, my question asks whether investing each entire paycheck upon receipt is equivalent to lump-sum investing, or if you'd treat paychecks more like dollar-cost averaging over a shorter time frame.

Seriously, you’d “sleep like a baby” if the market took a 40% hit? It wouldn’t bother you that maybe it might drop another 15 or 20%? Sure, intellectually knew I was going to be fine as my retirement was a 16 years away when the tech bubble burst in 2000, but it was certainly depressing. And as the real estate bubble began to grow, I knew we’d have another burst, but it still bothered me. It’s just human nature.
