New to your channel and love it! I'm 71 yrs old and have lived in this apartment for 23 yrs now. My place has needed decluttering for many yrs but I was still working my way out of "life trauma's", and couldn't get focused for anything. I also couldn't afford a caregiver. So here I am now, really ready to trim things down and in just a matter of a few months I've lost the ability to walk. I'm trying to declutter from my scooter but it is hard to do. So, for what it's worth... people, watch her video and declutter before life moves so fast that something takes away your ability to sort your own belongings. You really don't want someone else doing it for you. God bless this lovely woman who's name I don't know.

How funny! I literally just this afternoon boxed up most of the decorative items in my living room and bedroom, because I'm tired of dusting them! It will be so much quicker to just dust flat surfaces. I'm not ready to get rid of them completely, they are things I enjoy seeing on the shelves, but I don't dust nearly as often as I should because I dread picking everything up and dusting it too. I'm going to put the box away for a while and see if I actually miss them or not.

We moved to a smaller house in retirement that had no basement and a much smaller garage. I made up my mind that I just flat out didn't want to store anything. In my last house I spent so much time cleaning storage areas, so I used a spare bedroom as a staging area and I actually sold every tote on Facebook (in 10 minutes...guess we all have stuff). As I decorated the house I shopped the room and every day I picked through stuff in there and made a donation run every friday. Once the house was decorated I gave away everything left in the room. Everything I own you can see or open a cupboard and closet to see. Nothing in storage was a weight off my mind, it was just a bunch of delayed decisions. Having a big house just causes you to have excuses for not dealing with stuff.

Brilliant! I’m actually upsizing to a much bigger house - but that doesn’t mean more stuff. I actually plan to have nothing stored away bar a few diy things, paint tins and that sort of thing that you need but don’t want to see! Everything will be visible in a cupboard or shelf. Why have things that are hidden away.

@@1588chrissy when I got done painting a room I poured the leftover paint in a jar and put in the back of the closet. Great for touch ups and I threw the cans away, they only rust and let the paint go bad anyway. The very last room...the previous junk room...I mixed all the half cans together and painted. It came out gray. No paint cans left....I was pretty freaking serious about no storage haha.

@@poodlegirl55 that is hilarious! I also pour all into jars - very handy for touch-ups and all uniform in shape and size so easy to store. I don’t mind having a small cupboard with these types of things (like brushes, rollers, tools) but I refuse to use my home as a warehouse for shops!

I ended up with my parent's belongings, with family items that other members said they wanted but could "not take right now", with the kid's belongings as they headed off to college and new jobs far away, with friend's overstock when they downsized, and with my own things accumulated over the past 60+ years.

Left behind were my (useful but) occasionally used items which I put into clear bins then stacked on shelving units in the garage. My house is decluttered but I have what I need. Shelving units and clear bins are worth the investment.

I had a broken water heater, unnoticed for a couple of weeks. You just know that flooded some space where I had items I cherished stored. I started looking at what I called just junk, extra linen, books, furniture, televisions, you name it, I had it and most to none being used, stored in some of those bins. I offered what ever the grown kids wanted to keep and donated the rest to anyone needing it, the neighbors, friends. I took a month to get uncluttered, still living the same, and I wouldn't go back to that again. For myself, I am mid-seventies age, I don't ever want my kids to deal with anything like this after I'm gone. A little encourage to anyone of age, really, I had to take care of my Mom's and it makes it very hard on your heart trying to decide what to keep, I ended with a lot and she wouldn't have wanted me to struggle over making those decision. Best of luck to those ppl decluttering, it is worth the time and effort.

These points really hit home with me. As a teacher, I am too exhausted during the school year to care about messes when I get home, esp. during this pandemic. So, I was looking at summer as my time to purge. I created a to-do list which I thought would help but just overwhelmed me. Now that summer is near over, I'm battling frustration and disappointment in myself over what did NOT get accomplished. I know I need to embrace the "leave no mess behind" style and give myself grace and time. I love how you ended with the motivation aspect. Both of my parents died within a year of each other. The clutter that was left behind for my sisters and me to deal with hasn't been all fun (we did find some wonderful treasures among the clutter). I determined to NOT do that to my children. I also want to have more time for people in my life, not bogged down with managing my stuff. I love the added aspect of time with the Lord. That sounds so peaceful and necessary for my mental and spiritual health. Thank you so much for your words of experience and wisdom!

I’ve found that I really like having a good many things but can achieve the same serene external look just by having the right storage solutions. In fact before I bring something new into my home I plan exactly where I can put it so it doesn’t make the room look cluttered (I make art, collect crystals, sew, cook, etc.) With some foresight you can have it all and still have that simple serenity in your home.

I was surprised at how much my sons and husband decluttered their things themselves with me just being around to help them with that. I asked them to "put out of the room what they didn't want to have there anymore" and they got rid of 40 to 50 % of their stuff without any pushing from me. My next step will be the kitchen. The basement is a long work in progress. My goal is atm to declutter 50% of the things and see later how to proceed.

Helpful, thanks. It is hard to imagine you flustered at all,you seem so calm. I see that when I sit down j7st to relax, I don't because I see all the books, "heirlooms", etc., that I need to deal with. U think I'll start anew in the extra bedroom, a/k/a storage unit so I won't have to SEE the clutter 1st thing in the morning. I really need to get ready for a retirement community.

I have been on my journey to minimalism for 4 years now as I have found it is not just a one day thing and a continuous way of living. Continuing to declutter often and take a look at your "stuff" and life. It has helped me so much with my anxiety and being able to now spend so much more time with my family instead of spending all day cleaning all of the "stuff" we used to have. Now we are looking to sell our house so this minimalist mama is getting rid of SO MUCH more that I thought was already minimal enough. It's so fun finding new things to declutter and life without!

I’ve been desperate to get my home in order and declutter. I’ve been stuck for a long time and it’s been so discouraging cause even though my desire to do it is there, I become intimidated by the mess, the boxes of junk I’ll put aside and basics my bedroom became the room I stuffed everything in in order to have the rest of the house look decent. I always feel no peace and I know it’s the house, It literally had stopped me from being successful at homeschooling my kids, having Bible studies in my home that I feel God is leading me to do cause I’m always waiting to get it together but it’s like a battle in my mind and I decided that I’m not letting satan do this to me no longer! He’s under my feet snd I’m taking authority over my household. It’s overwhelming and often I start going through stuff and especially papers takes awhile and it tedious and I don’t end up finishing and I end up not following through to complete it and get an entire room finished. So I’m thinking I have to approach it differently like the onion method that Minimalist Mom channel talks about cause I started watching her now snd I’m inspired. I love how you talk about your goal being to grow in relationship with God having that time for him cause that’s exactly why I want to do this! I want to do Gods will and he’s calling me and I know he’s been dealing with me on the house awhile now in order to move forward and serve him snd my family better( I’m a mom of 5 with 2 step kids) I was a minimalist when I got married and had peace. But I had no idea my husband was I’ll say boarder line horder, we always stored his stuff for when we get a bigger house, It became a nightmare having so much that he didn’t want me to touch. So this is what makes it a bit harder. He’s trying and I’m being more consistent to pray for him to fully surrender to God as I have now, cause All this messy life actually cause much craziness and eventually I fell from the faith and into sin after awhile but God showed me I could do nothing apart from him! I repented of all the years I didn’t trust him and committed to praying and reading the Bible and I found the true Jesus of the gospels and have experienced so much deliverance and healing for me and my family! It’s been amazing the power of God. Anyone reading this please pray I overcome this stronghold and constantly persevere so get rid of 80 % of our stuff and my husband jump on board so we can have the peace, joy and freedom to serve God to the fullest, focusing on the things that really matter. I’m done allowing this to torment me, I believe I can do it with Gods helping me to not give up. Thank you so much.❤️🙌🏼📖🙌🏼❤️

The Clutter Clarity channel is great, as are The Minimalists, Minimal Mom, ClutterBug, and Dana K. White. The most important thing to realize is that we’re all different, and what we do with our stuff is a reflection of how our brains work. Clutter Clarity points out that true hoarders aren’t as common as one would think by how often the term is thrown around; it’s more likely that your husband either grew up poor and wants to always be prepared by having the things he may need on hand, or he’s an excessive accumulator who loves possibilities. If the former is the case, try looking up the Minimalists’ 20/20 rule. If the latter is true, Dana K. White is amazing because that’s how her brain works and she found a practical way to work past that. ClutterBug is great for helping people to see that what you may think is clutter is simply your husband’s preferred organizing style. Organizing styles are a combination of either micro or macro organizing preferences (e.g., do you like to throw all the office supplies in one container or have them sorted into smaller categories) and either visual or hidden storage. I hope some of these concepts will help you better understand both yourself and your husband!

When we have items that are not being used or kept in bins unseen, they slowly die in that space. Someone else can give them new life and be so excited to receive what we no longer need. I used to focus on how much I spent on things I donated until I accepted that that purchase served some purpose in my life at the time and that it was ok to now let them go.

I too am a busy mom attempting to declutter. Sometimes I really do want to hear someone else's journey. But if a video says it will be about the things a person would not have done and would not do again, please do not delay that information for 13 minutes. If someone had not posted where your regrets lay I would have quit watching. It is not to devalue the early part of the video, but surely you understand a super pressured busy mom might not have 13 spear minutes. Another time when I'm looking for comfort and understanding of someone else's stressors that is when the first part of the video would be worth it. Thanks to someone tipping me off about the 13 minute mark, I too will quit shuffling those bins! I'm still grateful just considered dividing videos like this into two or three separate shorter videos.

I totally agree you have to decide not the kids. However, the best 2 hours of my life with my talkative lovey nephew (5), I asked for his help. I put two boxes, down dumped his bathtub toys into one. I asked him to choose his toys put the one he really played with and put the others in the box so we could gift it. He spent those two hours looking at each and every toy, sorting the whole time. We got rid, I mean gifted 2 toys. I was so pleased. Just thinking about this makes my day and I smile!

I use my “FlyLady Zones” decluttering the same way I shop. I didn’t buy it all at the same time, I get rid of it as I feel “I don’t use it anyway, get rid of it”!!! I don’t follow a time limit, nor a numbers game, “37 fling boogy”. Nor a one thing day one, two things day two & so on for 30 or 31 days. I do it at MY leisure. I keep a box at my front door for the stuffI haven’t or won’t be using, figuring if I need it BEFORE I get it to charity I can go dig it back out. Our charity shop only accepts donations Tue & Thur. Then there’s also my church who sells it to fund this event or that.

That is great. I didn't know I had so much paper clutter until after I moved. I gathered the paper from every room and filled two large boxes. Every evening I took a little flat basket over and pulled a bunch of stuff out and would sit and relax watching videos and sorted the stuff. In the morning I shredded, trashed and filed the stuff. Funny, when the boxes were empty after about two months I kind of missed my routine, but I don't miss the stuff, I deal with papers every day.

That is tough. I think we want our spouses (or others living in our home) to jump all in because we’re ready too. Most people need more convincing than our “latest endeavor.” I tried and failed many ways to dealing with our house. Detachment from the material, the worldly "things" is the key to growing closer to Christ. It's also incredibly hard to do & so many of us struggle with it. How ridiculous is that when you think of the unimaginable glory of our God we are missing out on because we can't take our eye off of our "stuff!" My main issue is that my brain kicks in while trying to declutter. I literally argue with myself... What if I need it? You haven't worn it in 3 yrs... I know but what if... What if... What if... I need a "whatifectomey!"

I appreciate this. I inherited lots of important documents and things. The larger items like older furniture a piano and non sentimental items I ended up selling the vast majority online through various websites. I've become quite a salesman! However, the paperwork, books, family items and some awesome childhood memories items I've held on. I have one catch all room. It's all in boxes. I'm struggling to go through it. In total I have about 170 boxes containers to process. It stresses me. Please encourage me. Oh one note: a local church has occasional yard or rummage sales so a lady from that congregation helped me pack and release many excellent items for that sale. So I am progressing in this but I still have stress

Great video. I am single and childless, but I have simplified my ;life tremendously by owning no white clothes that need their own laundry load, so for one person, I now do all of my laundry for the week in one load; however, it will bump up to two loads if I wash my sheets and towels, which are charcoal gray. I own bath towels that consist of 2 bath, 2 hand towels and 2 washcloths, and own one set of sheets, which I wash and put right back on my bed, all charcoal gray. My home has plenty of color though, because items that I don't have to launder are of a variety of colors, it's only items that go into the washer that I created a one-load does it all life for, and it's been amazing and very fast!

I started decluttering last year. We are not big hoarders and purge every month and still our 3600 sq feet filled up in 8 years to a point that we are not enjoying our home. Staying at home during COVID inspired us to take it slow and study and purge anything we don't use or need. We donated several boxes, trashed some and sold few pieces of furniture.

I did quite a large declutter recently. I did some shuffling to get to stuff that needed to go. I got rid of more than I thought I would initially so some of the shuffling was to where it actually goes! I just finished school so I finally had time. In the future I will be much more minimalist. Something I ran into is now I have too many totes! Eventually I will need to get rid of them, but I also put things from cardboard boxes into bins. I foresee much of the stored items going as well. I have found I have to process some item mentally and then I am able to toss or donate it. I also can't declutter everything of my husband's, he needs to decide on his stuff. I also let kids decide what would go and let their decisions for their stuff stand!

Yes, I feel the same - I am currently decluttering because we do have way too much stuff that isn't used, won't be used, etc, but I certainly am NOT a minimalist. I enjoy watching decluttering and minimalism videos to get inspiration and ideas. My everyday home decor is kind of cottagey and cozy, with a good bit of decor, but everything is loved, beautiful, and has been collected over a period of time. Bare spaces feel cold and lonely to me!

With this pandemic time working from home, I discovered (I hope as same as everyone else), that we really don’t need much to live. Staying home made me realized how much clutter I had, so I’m starting little by little. I’m getting ready to retire in two years so I thought let me start now little by little so I don’t have a lot at the last minute. I started in a hallway closet. I empty the entire closet, cleaned it, and started going through everything I had in there. I separated stuff to goodwill, trash and keeping. I used plastic containers to put some of the stuff in order. Not only does it look clean, organized and pretty, but I have so much room (but not going to put anything else in there unless I’m keeping). It feels so good when even a little part of your hose is in order and gives you the motivation to do other areas. I’m still working on different areas little by little, but I like to take my time. The garage will be my last project, but I’m planning to hire help so I can do it faster and not be so tired. Hopefully, by the time I’m ready to move out of state, it will be a lot easier for me to pack.

When people say more clothes make more laundry...This assertion denies the laws of physics 😁 A few things have to be happening. 1) People are changing clothes more than they should. 2) People are putting clean clothes into the laundry. or 3) The laundry is piling up making a bigger job once it is tackled (so the amount of work for the amount of days is the same, just is more pleasant to keep up than catch up). I used to do #3 when I was a young mom, and we had to address #1 and #2 with the kids. Having very minimal wardrobes for a time helped us develop the good laundry habits, but as our wardrobes have grown larger over time, the problem has not come back, because in the end it is about habits, not the number of clothes. We do like keeping our closets decluttered for other reasons though, like it is easier to find things and put things away.

Yes! That is very true. Our issue has been having way too much to dirty up before we "HAD" to wash it. That's the issue right, why wash laundry before the hampers were full or we ran out of undies? Our issue was originally enough hampers for 14 loads of laundry. Waaaaaaayyyyyy too much! Having less has definitely helped build more positive habits and if we get behind because well....life...it doesn't take nearly as long to catch back up.

THANK YOU!!! 7 days=7 undies no matter how many are in my drawer. Most people have too much but I don’t want to have to wash my underwear 3 times in 2 weeks or go without. I have always kept up on my wash....it’s a natural thing for me so maybe that’s why I think it’s a little overdone by some in regards to the very few clothes. We should be able to go more than a week if we have to. We wear our jeans at least a few times. Tops, undies and socks don’t take up very much room. I want my clothes to work for me, not be under the g*n to wash them every few days even if I have to lose sleep to do it.
