How I Discovered I had Colorectal Cancer | Amy's 3b Colon Cancer Story | The Patient Story

The Patient Story

The Patient Story

Күн бұрын

Amy was told her symptoms were all in her head. As a mom of two, she began to feel "off" and tired and got some bloodwork to assess her health. After her bloodwork returned clean, her doctor attributed her symptoms to anxiety. She started seeing a counselor and prioritized her mental health but her symptoms only got worse. After finding blood in her stool, she demanded a colonoscopy.
After the procedure, her doctor admitted he was wrong and Amy was diagnosed with 3B colorectal cancer.
In this story, she voices how advocating for health saved her life, the importance of knowing your genetics and how she’s working to break the stigma of colorectal cancer.
The interview has only been edited for clarity.

I was 64 and had never had a colonoscopy. Tsk tsk. I was tired. Anemic. And bleeding that I ignored for at least a year. At first, blood when I wiped. Then blood all the time in my underwear. Then I was passing blood clots. Then the pain that finally sent me to the ER. I got a CT scan and the sweet Dr made a colonoscopy appointment for me, put his hand on my shoulder and said, don’t miss it. And I didn’t. A couple of weeks later I left the hospital without that 2a egg sized tumor and 12” of large intestine. Had an ileostomy for two months and have lived to tell the tale. Love to you girl.

I went to my doctor for rectal bleeding and pain. She told me it wss just hemmoroids and said I could not get a colonoscopy until I turned 50. After a year of complaining, I finally got my colonoscopy. May 2022 is when I got the news of my colon cancer. I spent most of 2022 in treatment. Chemotherapy, radiation, and so many trips to Mayo in Rochester, MN. I'm now in recovery. Thank you for sharing these stories. It's good to know I'm not alone.

3B as well, 6 months folfox, five weeks radiation and then surgery, as bad as it was, it is amazing how fast you rebound when done. My symptoms were brushed off because i had a negetive cologuard test, it was a false negetive, only after a trip to the ER for a complete blockage was my cancer found, DO NOT USE COLOGUARD. I agree about the mental part of recurrence, it sucks, i will likely have to have a bag the rest of my life, but it is not as bad as you would think it is, i can do what i want and eat what i want, and not live my life around a bathroom.

Co-worker was diagnosed with Colon Cancer 3B his only symptom was a few days of unusual looking mucous diarrhea no pain at all. When the GI doc found it said it was blocking about 75% of his colon. If he had not gone in and doctors took him seriously, he would have died if he left it for another 6-12 months. He was age 40 when he was diagnosed the GI doc up until the colonoscopy kept telling him he was too young to have colon cancer. He was shocked to find colon cancer said it was unusual. He ended up finding another doctor who actually said it's lot more common now days and any GI doc who turns someone away from a colonoscopy that has some symptoms is going to miss people who have cancer. That was almost 5 years ago he got treated and is has a normal life today.

I cannot believe this poor woman had such a hard time getting a colonoscopy after BLEEDING. That's freaking tell-tale, even if you're younger than 45. We have an awful food supply that's been sprayed with Round-Up, we're bombarded with fast food and sugar every day of our lives, new moms are stressed beyond belief, and people are getting sicker much younger. Doctors should already be aware of this and be willing to test. Bravo to this woman for fighting for her health, and standing up to the lab coats that all apparently think patients are stupid or hysterical.

Very interesting… just so u know, im a 38 year old man & was told by most doctors to see a psychologist. In my opinion, theres only a small percentage of doctors that are still curious or care enough to investigate past a few blood tests. The sad truth is if they thought i was a celebrity or abundantly rich, they would of tried harder. no accountability for the common person.

Oh my heart hurts for you and all you have gone through. Good for you for advocating! It is SO hard to face a medical professional and stand your ground like that. I was born with a very common heart defect and it rarely causes any discernible issues, especially in early to mid-life. I started having crazy arrhythmias, super fast heart rate (180’s just sitting still,) getting very short of breath, and palpitations. I spent more than a year seeing cardiologists and more often than not I heard, “it’s probably just stress, you’re too young (I’m now 41) you’re a busy mom of 3, do you drink a lot of coffee and have you tried meditating?” I KNEW it was more than that. I FINALLY found a cardiologist who really listened and went the extra mile with extensive and invasive testing. And finally, I learned what is really happening to my heart…it is failing. In exactly 4 weeks from today I will be undergoing full on open heart surgery to replace two severely leaking valves. I was so angry at first, thinking about all of the doctors who blew me off. But now I’m just grateful I will have the chance to see my kids grow up. Stay strong, you are a warrior! 🖤

In January 2014, she was rushed to the hospital due to extreme abdominal pain. They thought her ovaries were the issue…opened her up and found cancer everywhere in her pelvic area…gave her 6 months-she lived 11 months 11-28-14. The doctors think she had cancer for years. Same thing happened to me at age 37. It took me going to see a Jordanian GI doctor out of network that had just started practicing after emigrating here to give me a colonoscopy. He told me he’s been seeing it in younger people overseas for years & that doctors here need to start looking for it. This all happened in 2018 so hopefully it’s starting to change. Imo I think the driving environmental factor causing this is either PFAS and/or plastics. Bottled water is transported in hot trailers which releases microscopic pieces of plastic into the water.

@@alleyoop5185 Women are more likely to be dismissed though which is what the video is about. I am not a woman but get dismissed for other reasons that make them think I am not a reliable witness to my own body. It’s sad and ridiculous but being a woman means doctors don’t believe you and probably the only reason I’m alive today is because I’m not a woman. I have been so close to dying from problems caused by doctors who kept dismissing me until someone by chance discovered what was wrong at the last second. Something that would not have happened if they had any other reason not to bother trying to find out what was happening because they presumed I was just anxious or was exaggerating and not worthy of further investigation or testing.

I've had 3 types of cancer in 13 years,. The breast cancer has come back twice and it looks like it's back again. That's 5 battles with cancer. Each time I was told there was nothing wrong with me. I had to fight to have basic tests done. When they removed my first cancer (thyroid cancer) the mass was the size of a racquetball. All along they kept telling me my numbers showed nothing. I finally had an allergy doctor tell me he felt it was thyroid cancer. It was because of him I finally got a biopsy. Same thing happened with the breast cancer the second time. I was being seen at what's considered to be the best hospital in the world. You must fight! If you know something is wrong don't give up. Get second and third opinions. Research, present your case. Don't let them put you off until it's too late.

I got a colonoscopy in November because was suffering weird symptoms. I’m 26 so some would think that my doctor was hesitant about a colonoscopy since I’m young. My doctor is Asian (don’t know if this matters) but he quickly wanted me to get a colonoscopy as he explained it’s the absolute best way to diagnose something by finding or excluding possibilities. Everything came back fine and am now being treated for a deep anal fissure.

It quite literally pisses me off that your doctor brushed you off, due to “anxiety”.😡😤 I suffered for years, I was told it was anxiety, it was all in my head, over and over and over again, so I quit complaining. On one normal routine pap exam, a young P.A. at my OB/GYN clinic did a panel of labs and sure enough, I had been feeling sick, because I was sick, I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease. When NO ONE LISTENED TO ME, because I was “too young”. You’re a rockstar! 🎉 I’m glad that he’s learned from you. No one deserves that, we know our bodies. ❤

I relate to you, after 3 years of feeling sick having symptoms and going from 3 different doctors having all sorts of bloodwork and nothing but you are told it's depression, hormonal changes, and yet my mammograms come out normal. My primary recommended compounded progesterone, well that just accelerated things as I had fibroid in my right ovary and was experiencing breast pain off and on for 2 years my ob/gyn recommended supplements for the pain. I told my primary that he should refer me to an oncologist prior to taking the progesterone and he said it was my hormones causing my symptoms. Well I was diagnosed with breast cancer that had metastasis to my uterus, had a total hysterectomy. Had low dose chemo plus took oral chemo as well. I did it in 2016 and 2019 but I decided I don't want anymore chemo or oral. I'm doing holistic changes by diet, juicing, doing mindset affirmations, rebounding, supplements and other things as well. Stay away from sugar it feeds the cancer. Knowledge is power educate yourself. Most importantly the power of prayer and Faith. 🙏

I don’t take psych meds. Over the years I have learned they just cause me problems. They make me anxious I make mistakes or I’m so zoned out or feel absolutely nothing. I just find other ways to cope; uplifting music, going to the gym, keeping busy having structure; work is good for me, I like most of my coworkers and they like me, I like the patient population. I get depressed and upset around my toxic family, have high functioning autism and trauma very isolated when not at work. My cat is comforting as well and being around children. My mom takes loads of psych meds for her mental illness, she has tardive dyskinesia. She tried to drug me as a teen with these drugs. I was called the crazy girl for taking these drugs. Since I’ve stayed away I have not had not had to be hospitalized in years. I work on a psych unit and don’t care for psych and the lack of real treatment patients are given just drugs no therapy or skills group, just rec therapy groups instead, little pay, high stress, some populations dangerous, little staff with high acuity.

It can happen suddenly as it did for my wife on Valentine's Day 2013 when she woke me up in the middle of the night and told me that she had excruciating pain in her abdomen. We went to our local hospital's ER where they did a CT scan, found a mass in her pelvis, and transferred her to another hospital for surgery. By the end of that day they had removed a tumor at her ileocecal valve and did a double shotgun resection. It was stage 3b and she started FOLFOX chemo soon afterward and stayed on it for 6 months except that she stopped the platinum drug after 4 months due to increasing neuropathy. CT scans were negative for years afterward and eventually stopped. She still has the neuropathy in her toes but no other issues. Prior to the Valentine's Day event she had no symptoms at all But since the tumor was in the ileum which is much smaller diameter than the colon, it must have gotten totally blocked and caused the pain. Unusual I think for colon cancer to present at that site.

Reminder to be empowered: If you know something is wrong health-wise and you feel your medical team isn't listening to you, not providing adequate medical care/testing and rushing your appointments...BE YOUR OWN ADVOCATE AND DEMAND ADEQUATE CARE. It's okay to be "that patient" who is aggressive, demanding, or is called "difficult" by actual medical personnel. If you ask for testing and are denied for any reason, get it in writing that you were denied. Because nobody, including your medical "care" team, cares more about your health than you do. Call out bad care and get second, third opinions...it's okay because it's YOUR LIFE. Stop being polite and start expecting medical care teams to do their jobs.

So I should look at the genetic testing. As soon as my sister was diagnosed they also found it in her ovary as well. My gyno immediately scheduled me to have my ovaries removed and I was 56.
