Truck. Driving is a tough job in my opinion. I have a class A CDL and have had multiple jobs. Right now I'm looking for a job that works you less hours. The local jobs that I've had work you over 12 hours a day. I highly recommend watching Mike Rowe from Dirty Jobs KZbin Channel. He talks about how not many are going into the skilled trades but for many it would be a satisfying career. Love that guy! Best of luck in your pursuit of happiness!

I can attest to this I come from a Academic family. Everyone has a masters degree. I mean EVERYBODY except me. I have a 4 year degree. Father has an economist degree. Once I received my finance degree I eventually decided to get a trade. Why ? No fuking clue. I went into HVAC industrial and Residential eventually receive my license. It was perhaps the best thing to have ever happened to me. I also study IT for 2 years. Which in essence gave me the full packaged for a service tech. Started a small business 4 years ago. As of today, I have 43 employees, and over 18 vehicles for my service tech. Loaded with the right equipment necessary of course. I recommend to anyone a trade. Our society though values this Academic wizards, although I mean in a good way. Most of them are great people, however the institutions is design to separate the Elite. Classes vs Masses Anyways good comment though

There are many good trucking companies that allow you to stay local, Pepsi Budweiser and a port job are a few. I drive regional now, within 600 miles of my yard but when I started 15 years ago I was Over the road and I wouldn’t do it again. I got my class A on my own and glad I did it. I got my cdls in 4 weeks. I graduated last month. Started my new job this month. Just got out of the truck 4 days ago from riding w my trainer. I was suppose to get tested today to get "upgraded" but I waited around all day and it didnt happen so I assume itll be in the morning. Soon as I'm done with test I can go home for a few days. I'll either get my own truck and off I go or I'll ride with somebody else for 10000 miles depending on how I do on test. I dont even care at this point..I'm really ready to go hm for a while. I decided to go to work at PTL trucking. I know the pay is shit I'm just in it for the experience. I plan to be here at least a year..maybe 2. And I'll see how it's going at that point. I have some friends that's been driving for a while. One of em talked me into getting my cdl. The other I didnt even know drove a truck. And hes been here at ptl for almost a year. Hes seeing my prostitute neighbor and saw me cutting my lawn.. come and told me I should come here so.. Here I am. I'm kinda pist I didnt test today but I'm guaranteed 850 my first 3 weeks and this will be my 3rd check this week. So I'm getting paid to nap in the hotel and watch movies. Guess I shouldnt be too mad. From what I gather that's trucking.. Sometimes you just sit around. I dont mind this week cause I'm getting paid. But time goes in thursday. That means I better know somethin or I'm going home friday morning. Thanks for the $$ Holla.. I'll start my new company next week.

I'm kind of surprised that people didn't try to drift towards truck driving when ride shares were pushing cabbies out. You could have communities of people move out of low income areas of major cities to places in the midwest that won't have the same problems that big cities would have.
@spandex70553 жыл бұрын
good point, that is happening in some areas with specific communities starting trucking companies and only hiring their own people, problem is they bring 3rd world thinking into 1st world situations in terms of safety in particular.

Getting into uber or lyft, etc in states that aren't like nyc is muuuch easier than becoming a trucker. Becoming a trucker is long several month process that takes a lot of studying, training, Tedious paperwok filling and testing to accomplish. With ridesharing all you need is a 4 door car thats goes past a certain date, a phone, a background check and some other easy tests and ur good to go.

Drive OTR for 19 years, make more per mile driving for Uber/Lyft than i did OTR. Average 1.00 per mile profit ride share vs. .65 cpm OTR. After expenses, I pay myself approx. .75 per mile ride share. OTR was maybe .28 cpm. I found I would rather be self employed than work for someone any day of the week and twice on Sunday. Even owed my truck and had own authority for 10 years, still make more real income doing rideshare.
