I was a 10 year old commission artist for like, 2-3 months, then I quit because I felt like I didn’t have enough creative freedom. Now I’m making oil paintings with my own ideas and I’m planning on putting them online for sale but I plan to do a couple more. I’m about to turn 13 and I’m taking online marketing classes to further my understanding of business so I could properly sell my paintings. Commissions aren’t for everyone, they’re pretty difficult imo. Love the video btw!

I've been on KZbin for just over a year. I typically created art for fun and I guess, for my mental health. 2 years ago someone sat me down and genuinely asked, "Why are you a bouncer at a bar." He fixed in on my eyes continuing, "Risking my life....and hands. With your talent wouldn't you want to be an artist?" It changed my life. I did some metacognition and mulled over my needs and wants. I was careful to put emotions on the back burner. I started doing some commission work and a friend convinced me to take a shot at KZbin. See where it leads. ALWAYS REMEMBERING MY ACTUAL GOAL: Becoming a working full-time artist. 🎨 While leaving myself open to new horizons and alternative destinations. I just broke 100 subs. I have a day job that I have to continue with for my current obligations and responsibilities. I make sure to give time everyday to the channel and my personal art growth. You inspire. Thanks to you and yours.🙏💙

Thanks for sharing your story. I have a goal of earning 5k a month from my art, whether that's youtube revenue, shop sales, patreon whatever! I feel the same way you do, in that I believe it's something I can achieve in the next couple of years. I started making money this year ( I opened a shop finally ) so the ball is now rolling! :D Good luck with reaching your goal, I know you've enrolled in a business class so I'm sure that'll help you too!!

In case anyone is turned off by taking commissions, I've only twice had a commission client tell me to change something. Most clients just let me do what I want. I think it depends on your price range & skill level.

Yes but how do you get people interested in wanting to commission you to do something for them? That is where I struggle the most.

I often wondered why I felt the way I did about certain things, and to hear another person feel and think the same way - is so reassuring! Definitely relate to wanting to be your own boss and feeling restricted when doing commissions! Great video and you have inspired me - wish you all the best :)

Amie! So exciting to see your success! You have done well and will continue to do well! I never had this kind of success in the 30+ years working as an artist. I made enough to pay my bills and as a semi-retired person, I can now create the art I want to create. The opportunity for artists to make more than “a living“ is so much easier in the global reach available today! I would never have dreamed of selling a watercolor card to someone in the UK ! You have customers in California, USA, even cards to sold cards to people all over the world! Congratulations! You just keep working hard and I believe that your dreams will come true!

Another great way to add a small income stream to your existing business is to license your artwork to different businesses. I don't know if you have considered that or not, but a lot of stores would probably pay for your artwork so that they could put it on items like home decor and such.

Thank you for that video, my Journey mirror's yours upto a point, but your further along than I am. My first venture was Pyrography and at the time it seemed great(although my work wasn't) but soon ended up being more like a printer making same artwork over and over, I then had a major break down mentally(not related to the art, just a bad time in my life). 4 year ago I met my new partner and we had a baby and although I did keep on with art I had other priorities. I started drawing with graphite pencil which has always been my thing since a kid as my main medium and people started wanting me to draw pets for them, but it was through word of mouth and I was doing OK but extremely bored. Luckily my partner is very supportive and is on-board and encouraging for me to make a career from art, but I realised that I wouldn't be able to sustain a family and keep my sanity by only using graphite. So my next step was to learn coloured pencil and add another string to my bow which although a lot of graphite drawing is interchangeable with coloured pencil(and Pyrography) there is differences which I am working on. I am now at a stage where my work is to a standard I am content with although I will always strive to improve and learn new things. I am now looking to take that next step in my journey and thats where I ended up watching your video, I have unofficially set a 2 year target to make my art a sustainable career. So thank you very much for your video it is content creaters like yourself who have given me the extra knowledge and confidence to actually take steps from art being a hobby or semi professional artist to try take it to the next level.

Thankyou Amie for sharing your Art story so honestly and thoroughly. Starting with the search for your ideal medium, your first competition producing such interest and then the creative frustration and restriction you faced as an artist who was churning out pet portraits. Aligning with Patreon, taking on teaching and further commissions became a healthy side hussle and declaring your independence and building your Art business. I love the fit you found; the freedom you discovered in teaching students how to draw wildlife with coloured pencil. Inspiring *!*

I do my art purely for me and my own pleasure and don’t expect to earn money from it as I started waaaay to late, while all of us at some time think yes it would be nice to earn money from art but I am not that ambitious so well done to you. Couldn’t have been easy with a baby in the mix either. Hello from Brazil! Three years later from this video, I'm curious how things are going for you! I really hope you reached your goals! Right now, I'm on the start of my journey just like yours! Painting pet oil portraits and some colorful acrilic portraits to fulfill my freedom needs! 😊 I'm kind of lost about where to start. I already sell some work but locally the rates are very low, so I have to do it as a side job, on my free time. I don't know if I start an KZbin channel or invest my time on painting viciously and publish many works on Instagram. Any thoughts? Thank you!

I have always wanted to learn how to draw/paint. I never thought it was possible, and fell towards knitting, sewing and crochet. But, that want to draw has always been there. I’d love to be able to do this one day, and you are such an inspiration. When did you start drawing, did you take lessons or did you just have a “natural” talent?
