Let’s EQ these scream vocals from scratch
If there’s one thing people tend to over-EQ as much as heavy guitars, it’s gotta be screaming vocals.
As a matter of fact, I was one of the worst offenders of this.
Harsh screaming vocals can be a huge pain to fit into a mix.
Much like heavy guitars they can often be:
Too bright..
Night bright enough..
Too boxy..
Weirdly hollow sounding..
Abrasive and harsh..
Dull and muffled..
In today’s tutorial, I share with you my stupid simple approach to EQing screaming vocals that takes less than a minute to pull off.

God damn, the low shelf filter was a game changer! I kept trying to EQ the low mids on my tracks with a bell filter and it kept sounding boxy as hell. When I switched to the shelf it all went away. Much appreciated!

Nice! I'm now experimenting with your distortionpedal method. It sounds way better than before. However, when i use sidechain distorion withbthe same pedal, it sounds less "dull", and much bigger. Good stuff

Great video Bobby. I just finished Polished production anywhere and I kinda felt screams/ growls would have been very beneficial (for me anyway). Do you plan on updating it? It was a great course and I learned a ton BTW. I really appreciate the lifetime access unlike other similar mixing courses/ subscriptions.

Not a professional here. I have a decent Shure dynamic microphone pop filter and have recorded music for years... But for the life of me I can never seem to get my vocals where I want them. Because of my inexperience, I always struggle to get clear vocals that sound silky smooth but without killing all of the highs so that everything comes through crisp and clear without shrieking with s's and sounding ear piercing. I cannot for the life of me get a decent mix that I'm happy with. Musically speaking I can always get my tracks to sound full and Rich... I don't know if it's just the kind of microphone I'm using or it's just that I don't know how to mix metal slash fry scream vocals well. I'm open to any and all suggestions.

For me is hard to push back vocals in the mix. I try reverb, highcut, volume, etc. and I cant find the sweetspot easily.

Have you tried a subtle slap delay with all of the top rolled off? That's my go to when I want my vocal sitting in the mix without it sticking out too much.

Hey Bobby, do you think there is too much hype on the Pro Q? Would a C4 do the same thing?

I've never used the Pro Q, but I'm sure it's great. The C4 has always done everything I've ever needed as far as multiband compression, so I stick with that one.

If you're applying the same effects (EQ, compression, Limiting etc) to both the main and double, would it make more sense to bus them and apply the effects to the bus?

Great question! No, because by doing it independently the processors are reacting only to one performance at a time. The sound would be very different when doing it on a buss especially if there's volume automation on the individual vocal tracks.

It's a feature that's only in the newer version of Pro Tools. What version are you running?
