Thank you for this video. My story goes thus - I am not a worker but the wife of a CEO of a Company in Dubai. So we moved to Dubai in 2021from the UK due to my husband's business. Prior to the move, I had gone to Dubai with my husband on holiday three times. I am very sensitive to people's emotions or lack of it and so, behind the "good afternoon ma'am, how may I help you ma'am" etc, there was always an uncomfortable, uneasy feeling I could not shake off about Dubai. I quickly realized that a lot of the staff were often overworked and treated rather badly. So I began to do my research to see where the white vans and buses always took the workers after work and it was disappointing to see how the OTHER HALF live in Dubai! So fast forward to 2021 when we finally moved to Dubai. We stayed the first three months at the Westin Mina Sayayi Beach Hotel and most of the staff were amazing! However, it was clear that some of them did not like the fact that I am a black woman who they had to answer to. I was always very deliberately polite and pleasant but that did not stop some people in Dubai from being rude to me instinctively. The same goes for a lot of the men (whites, Indians Emiratees) who often jump to the wrong conclusion that I am a prostitute and would show and treat me with disrespect, contempt (they still do) whilst trying to petition me for sex. Ironically, as a committed Christian woman, I always dress modestly. Then we moved to a gated community where again as a minority black woman, I am sometimes treated with suspicions and rudeness, the latest incidence happened four days ago. The man was caught on camera in the gated community treating me badly and he is now answering for his rudeness! He was rude to me because he thought for me to be in a gated community, I must be a nanny or a maid so he treated me badly. What I find most disappointing is that often when these people realized I am not employed as a nanny or a maid and that they are in trouble for their rudeness, they would immediately apologise saying "Sorry ma'am I did not know who you were". I find this upsetting because it should not matter whether or not I am a maid, a nanny or a menial worker. As a human being, I should be treated with respect period! Earning respect should not be subject to what you think my material status in life is! So, behind the tall buildings and the biggest mall, gated golf communities etc, I find Dubai to be full of all the vices often associated with a pretentious society.
@OreliaLatrice2 жыл бұрын
Wow! Your story is amazing. It’s disappointing to know that some people still have that racist mindset, however it does not surprise me. You should do a video about your experience.

Thats exactly what Dubai is right? They make all these buildings, everything shining, sparling, highest technology.. Its all materialistic..all that matters to them is how things LOOk.. SO that's how people are also treated.. The good looking, white, rich ones with respect.. The brown /black, lower class.. With rudeness.. They are all entirely about show.. They are a golden apple that is spray painted and rotten inside. No genuine hospitality, culture, ethics.. Just the bling!

Oh, I thought I was the one with an issue with how people treat others in Dubai. I was there with my husband in 2019, celebrating our honeymoon when he told me to go and see the "singing fountain" We were all lovey dovey, sharing ice cream, taking pics, the things a couple in love will do. So when it was time for the fountain show, we move closer to have a good look and some man comes up close behind us and begins caressing my behind, and I was so shook 😳 I held tight to my hubby, shaking my head, looking so scared. I told him this guy behind us is trying to be sneaky and when my hubby turned to confront him, he moved away so fast. He was white skinned(don't know these ethnicities coz am black African and haven't had enough ecposure to know much difference) and I didn't do anything that would make him treat me like less than human, I was even dressed in a long dress despite there being many half dressed ladies that were looking single and available Ps. We were a Swiss family expats and my father was working for the army. We had a good life there and everything was paid for, even my education. As time went on, we started to see behind the facade. We got to know a lot of unfortunate people from India, Pakistanis, Bangladesh, Myanmar and Philippines. People who actually built this country with blood and sweat. Many never got the chance to go back home and many died on sone construction site. Also their crazy policies was for us very confusing and intimidating. For me and my dad, it was just modern day sklavery. I am now 39, and never have I considered to coming back to the UAE. My wife knows why, but I have work colleages who dream of going to Dubai for vacation. I told them my experiences and the experienced of people we know, but they don't seem to care. I often hear: " why should I care, I'm only there for holidays" What they don't know, is that they are actually supporting such regimes and terrible working conditions of the majority. Hello ! May Allah protect and guide you to his light and happiness in this life and the hereafter, God bless, Ameen. Excuse me for giving a little presentation of Islam, because it is very misunderstood nowadays, especially on those « Antichrist's » times, where media and politics are mixed to distort history and truth. And terrorists (puppets of the Antichrist) who misinterpret verses, out of ignorance and political motivations, and take them out of historical context (just like radical atheists do by the way), don't help either. Thank you very much for your time. Islam is an arabic word that means the Surrender to the One and Only God, our Creator, Protector, Provider, who gives us life and all that we have, we are safe and sound by his will and grace, we are His and to Him we return, and we have to thank him in this trial life by submitting to him by our free will, or later in the Day of judgment when it's too late to save our own skin. Islam was the original Religion descended to earth from heaven with Adam and Eve (peace and blessing be upon them) in the beginning of humanity. and was passed to people with the succession of the 124 000 prophets and 315 messengers of God to all nations and civilizations since, passing by Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Ismaël, Joseph, Moses, Aaron, Joshua, David, Solomon and Jesus (Peace and blessing be upon them) during the history of mankind, the last replaces and completes the previous, until the succession of the last messenger of God fourteen centuries ago, Muhammad (Peace and blessing be upon him) to complete the noble morals of all mankind, to bring humans and jinns out of darkness into light, and to purify people's religion and belief from corruption and polytheism, and return it to purity and true monotheism, like it was in the times of the prophets (Peace and blessing be upon them). Many Religions that we know nowadays, at their beginning were true and under Islam, initiated by one of the prophets of God, but their original teachings, history and scriptures have been corrupted over time with falsification and polytheism, or lost and replaced with false ones. That's why Islam is the only Religion accepted by God nowadays, which consists in bearing witness that there is no god besides Allah (God in Aramaic, the original language of Jesus and the Gospel), and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger, just like Jesus and Moses and others are His servants and messengers. Never a messenger of God said he was God or literally son of God, it was the people after him who changed the words of God and corrupted the Religion. God is unique and absolute, He does not need to have a family and sons or to associate anyone else with His kingdom, He can simply create whatever He wants, everything belongs to Him, and to Him everything will return. Allah said in Surah Al-Mu’minun : “God has never begotten a son, nor is there any god besides Him. Otherwise, each god would have taken away what it has created, and some of them would have gained supremacy over others. Glory be to God, far beyond what they describe. The Knower of the hidden and the manifest. He is exalted, far above what they associate. (91-92 / Translated by ITANI). Allah means the one and only God, the God of all prophets and creatures, the creator of the universe and mankind, and the Master of the Day of judgment, where our destiny, Hell or Paradise, is decided based on our faith and deeds in this trial life, and above all, Allah's mercy. Allah said in Surah Al-Ikhlas : In the name of God, the Gracious, the Merciful. Say, “He is God, the One. God, the Absolute. He begets not, nor was He begotten. And there is none comparable to Him.” (1-4 / Translated by ITANI). Allah said in Surah An-Nisa : O FOLLOWERS of the Gospel! Do not overstep the bounds [of truth] in your religious beliefs, and do not say of God anything but the truth. The Christ Jesus, son of Mary, was but God's Apostle - [the fulfilment of] His promise which He had conveyed unto Mary - and a soul created by Him. Believe, then, in God and His apostles, and do not say, "[God is] a trinity". Desist [from this assertion] for your own good. God is but One God; utterly remote is He, in His glory, from having a son: unto Him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is on earth; and none is as worthy of trust as God. Never did the Christ feel too proud to be God's servant, nor do the angels who are near unto Him. And those who feel too proud to serve Him and glory in their arrogance [should know that on Judgment Day] He will gather them all unto Himself: (171-172 / Translated by Muhammad Asad). Allah the Most Merciful said in Surah Ali-Imran : Behold, the only [true] religion in the sight of God is [man's] self-surrender unto Him; and those who were vouchsafed revelation aforetime took, out of mutual jealousy, to divergent views [on this point] only after knowledge [thereof] had come unto them. But as for him who denies the truth of God's messages - behold, God is swift in reckoning! Thus, [O Prophet,] if they argue with thee, say, "I have surrendered my whole being unto God, and [so have] all who follow me!" - and ask those who have been vouchsafed revelation aforetime, as well as all unlettered people, "Have you [too] surrendered yourselves unto Him?" And if they surrender themselves unto Him, they are on the right path; but if they turn away - behold, thy duty is no more than to deliver the message: for God sees all that is in [the hearts of] His creatures. Verily, as for those who deny the truth of God's messages, and slay the prophets against all right, and slay people who enjoin equity - announce unto them a grievous chastisement. It is they whose works shall come to nought both in this world and in the life to come; and they shall have none to succour them. (19-22 / Translated by Muhammad Asad).. Salam (Peace) -----------------

I was a professor in the UAE in the early 1990s, and this was somewhat true in my case. Both my parents became ill while I was there. I tried to tell my supervisor that I was the only child of my parents, and both were ill and needed my to come back temporarily. (I didn’t think this should have been a big thing--after all, in Arab cultures, children also have a HUGE responsibility to take care of elderly parents (it is in the Koran, like it is in the Bible). Well, they hemmed and hawed for about 10 days, and while I had my passport in my possession, there were subtitle threats being made by colleagues that I better not leave, or else (I couldn’t figure out or else “what”?). So, I quietly sold all my possessions, and I bought a one way ticket and left. No goodbyes to anyone, no formal leave, nothing. I really had no choice. My parents’ doctor was calling me (from the US to the Middle East--that was serious) and I needed to come back home ASAP. Well, I am very glad that I did. As soon as I got back, my Mom (who had developed Alzheimer’s since I had left) fell into a diabetic coma for a while, and my Dad (who had suffered a stroke while I was gone) had become legally blind. Their caregiver (whom I had hired) was herself ill, and unable to really take care of herself, much less anyone else. It was a mess-it was around Christmastime, and BOTH parents were admitted into the hospital and spent Christmas and New Year’s there. I am so glad that I returned home. However, things at the University were a mess, from what I gathered. While I tried to call friends, they really wouldn’t talk to me. They were afraid that their jobs would be threatened, and they told me that there were “repercussions” on them because I left. I explained that my family was ill, and moreover, I tried desperately to take a leave of absence like a normal person would, but was repeatedly denied (by a White Canadian Dean no less-not someone who wasn’t from my own North American culture). However, my friends were scared and asked me not to call again, which I didn’t. I find that there is a bifurcated system in the UAE. Yes, as a professor, I had a much better salary and more freedom, as I keep my own passport. But the fact that my colleagues felt any repercussions for my leaving tells you that you are considered a slave, and you have no “rights” to move freely as you wish. My friends tell me that I “absconded”, but with what? I sold furniture that I, myself bought with my wages. I left a car, I left a home, I left a lot more than I could take had I had the time to pack and ship my household. Only slaves “abscond”; workers have the freedom to quit a job if they so choose. This tells you that there is no real freedom in the UAE for foreign workers. I am very surprised that the guy in the video has returned, because I would be afraid to return there for fear of being jailed. Again, their laws are not like the ones in the west. As a postscript, about a year after I returned I received a call from a law colleague who had studied in the US and was visiting my city. He asked me to dinner, and because we had been friends when we were there, I accepted. When he told me that he had missed our lunches while I had been gone, I explained to him that I had tried my best to get my Dean to allow me a leave of absence due to my parents health, but that he had refused. This colleague was an Emirati, but was very westernized (having studied at Harvard and Oxford). I explained to him that is was morally disingenuous that Arabs continually preached about the decadence of people in the west, yet when a western professor wanted to do something that is actually mandated by the Koran as well as the Bible, I was being prevented. I should have been shown compassion for trying to be a good daughter, but instead no consideration was given for MY parents’ lives. When I explained to him that they were immediately hospitalized upon my arrival, he was shocked. They were hospitalized even when I had dinner with him. While he was in town, we had dinner twice, and while it was good to see him, I believe that he was sent there to ascertain if I had left for good reason (as I think of it in hindsight). After these two dinners, I never saw nor heard from this man again. I believe sincerely that the UAE Embassy sent him to feel out if I had been telling them the truth, and whether they were going to pursue me or not. But that is my warning to anyone wanting to take a job in any country in the Middle East. Slavery still exists, and this who passport thing IS REAL. If your job is professional, you may be allowed to keep your passport, but you cannot roam as freely as you might in the US, Canada or Europe. If you are a worker, as this man was, your passport will be confiscated and they use coercion to get you to stay. Your contract is more like indentured servitude than an employment contract here in the West, and this is a fact that you need to know. Be forewarned. While this happened 30 years ago, I don’t believe that the cultural attitudes have changed too much toward this. While I love Arab culture, the sheer duplicity and lies between what they claim that their faith says and does and the REALITY of what they say and do is really stark. Don’t be naive and gullible. You have NO RIGHTS in these countries-remember that when you sign contracts.

The level of abuse and cruelty is similar to the days of Deep South slavery. Also, small Indian boys taken from their homes used as camel racing jockeys with no protection from sexual predators. Hey I’ve got some really great news to share with you, Jesus Christ, the Son of God, died on a cross and resurrected on the third day so you may all have eternal life. If you believe and repent of your sins and put your faith and trust in Him as you would a parachute jumping off a plane at 25000 feet up in the air, He will give you eternal life in heaven as a free gift and I promise you, He will change your life forever as He did mine. He is the ONLY way to heaven and He loves you all. Please think deeply about this with urgency because this is your eternal life and soul, you don’t know when you could die, meaning you could die at any moment, so please consider this with all your heart. If anyone tells you that Jesus isn’t the only way, they are lying to you and they don’t care about your future

Personally, I held my passport but saw those around, especially poor Asian people suffering and all the stories you hear about the truth of Dubai are really true. Very happy to have left and now the closest I will go is airport transfer. It's a city doomed to fail, maybe not in the near future but one day the shine will wear off.

Dont limit yourself from the experience just because of the working conditions these workers are currently under. Thats such a narrow-minded view. Dubai is an amazing city, and there will always be a dark side to every city regardless where you are in the world. There is no perfect place. A lot of the people/workers you talk will mention that Dubai has offered much better living conditions than they would be back home. You dont even know their life back in their home country- its bad. Dubai has offered opportunities for these people. Could they be treated better? Of course, but it doesnt discount the fact that these jobs are considered as opportunities to the eyes of many

The thing that made her leave, though, was the fact that her boss's son was an absolute creep to her. She knew she had to leave and went to our country's embassy for help to go back to our country. Although I worked with Qatar Airways as a cabin crew, I still felt like entering a jail once we land in Qatar as we need exit permit each time to leave Doha to go home to visit families. They will not approve the exit permit applied if they felt you do not have enough off days etc. Glad that part of my life was done and dusted long time ago! You start appreciating little things in life after you working in a place like this! Horrible people with horrible attitude! No compassion, empathy whatsoever! I felt the same way about the labourers/construction workers. Every Kathmandu flight I do, we will always carry coffin/s with us to bring back bodies of young Nepali construction workers! I usually quietly say my prayers for them knowing that poor safety in Doha took their lives but it means nothing for Doha authorities 😢 It is modern day slaveries and heartbreaking 🙏🏽 All the best Gabi. Another major problem in Dubai is that without strong references, it's difficult to get a job. I came to Dubai with many financial commitments, thinking my previous experience would help advance my career. I have been in Dubai since March 2024, and until now, I haven't received any job offers. When I attended interviews, the managers or other people in positions of influence asked for inappropriate favors. I am really disappointed by this terrible experience. I even considered gathering evidence and reporting these issues to the Dubai government, but I felt overwhelmed. Now, I have decided to return to my home country. It's difficult to describe the kind of people I encountered in Dubai. I came to Dubai with many dreams, but I lost them all, and now I am especially mentally scarred and afraid of men

Yes the BBC did a exposure on this and rescued a young girl. Its worse in Libya where Africans are told they will get a good job and end up getting sold in the open slave markets there (thanks Obama) I'm p*ssed because I paid repatriations in my taxes to stop slavery worldwide from a UK government debt from 1820's and this is still going on. It's disgusting

Philippines are being treated better and gave more opportunities. Look ibqas dealt with by Philippines. I was heading Moroccan bath section and partly massage ..but they Philippines dealt with to an extent they brought theirs with zero knowledge of Moroccan bath and said she is professional. I was asked to test her I found out she knew nothing . I trained her and never said a word to our Iranian boss and others .. She was hired but I knew what they wanted. They wanted me out . I'm not saying I am the best but I'm among the best .. In massage I'm highly professional trained in different countries. Work with some Europeans, Africans in oil drilling sectors, construction etc .There clients sort for me but they were not Happy. In customer service, how can you compete with someone tgat studied hospitality and human resource cum big management. I was show casing all the skills trying to correct managers but that was my biggest mistake. I didnt know the system here. This was in 2021 dear what I faced there was hell. Was that from locals ? I got another place as house therapist for a rich British family .. Philippines were there already same if not that I met the woman from my work place I would have gone too. Honestly ibdnt know about all these about locals but note that majority claim to be locals but they are not

*Long Story Warning* Wow, just last year (2021) I also went to Dubai to work at a hotel. Upon my arrival, I noticed that Dubai was not all that, and I'm not even talking about the bling/luxurious culture, but I remember coming out of the plane and feeling a weird sensation about the workers in that airport. I also found it to be very disorganized in trying to obtain information, something I would not have expected when traveling to such a "developed" country. Seeing so many workers whose job was to simply push people's luggage, as soon as I stepped out of the plane, already triggered a warning inside of me. When I arrived at my accommodation (via taxi) I was told I was gonna be welcomed by the supervisor of the place to pay for my ride, which did not happen. Moreover, the security/receptionist working at the hotel's accommodation barely spoke any English, which made me feel even less welcomed. I was directed to a room and tried to go sleep since it was a long flight. On the next day, I spent the whole day in my bedroom alone (isolating myself due to covid). I was not sure if I could leave the premises or not, or if I had to report anywhere or where I could go eat something... I was also unsure whether to just leave the room because I was not given a key for it, but by night time I was so hungry that I had to leave and go find somewhere to eat. The following day I was finally given a brief tour of the building by the supervisor after having to essentially ask for it, I also received a message from the HR office saying that I could start on that day and that I was not required to isolate for 3 days anymore (as I had been told a few days prior to my departure). Luckily I decided to start the next day because on that day, I read something on my contract that had not been explained to me correctly by the agency that arranged the job. That triggered another warning inside of me. This same day, I decided to explore a bit of the city to get a feel for it, and I did not expect to see thousands of immigrants who looked like they were not happy to be there. It was evident to me, while traveling on the subway, that some people were exhausted. Moreover, I was shocked to not see any of the migrant workers "enjoying life", I only saw tourists and locals in the cafes/restaurants/stores at the mall, the rest (and also the majority) of the population was either too tired to be enjoying, too busy or just simply didn't have the money. I've been to places in Central and South America with much fewer resources available and had not felt that same energy of "labor" (it is hard to describe, but definitely noticeable). The next day, I had to figure out by myself how to get to the Hotel, because the accommodation was far away from there (You would think I was told by the supervisor on my tour, but I was not). I found the white van and got in. The drive in the morning took about 45 minutes, simply because of traffic. I get to the hotel and go straight to HR. As soon as I walked in there was barely a "Hello, nice to meet you, how are you?"... I was told to grab a seat while the HR person grabbed the package of documents. Before I signed anything, I decided to ask for clarification on the portion of the contract that I had come across the previous day. I explained to them that the agency told me that had I worked for 3 months, I would not have to pay a fee, but the HR person informed me that was not correct. The HR people explicitly told me that I had to pay a fine (if I quit any time before 1 year) to cover the costs of the visa. When I heard that, I got scared because I knew that was not something that was allowed (to ask an employee to cover the costs of visa/recruitment), and I left that day without signing any papers because I was not 100% sure what I was getting myself into. Also, during that meeting, they tried to manipulate me into signing the papers by saying that I had already spent money to come there, and I traveled so far, and so on...Something that did not work for me because again, I had my mind made up. When I got back to the accommodation, the room I was in had been locked, with my stuff inside and I did not have keys to it. So I had to go to the lobby and speak to one of the guards there to open it for me, but I was told that I was gonna be moved to another room. I think that locking my stuff in there was their way to tell me to go speak with them, rather than simply asking me. The guard then took me to another room, which did not seem like I was planned to be in because it had just a mattress, no pillows, and no blankets...I went back to him to ask about where could I get some pillows and he didn't know either. I had to ask to use the ones from the previous room I was in and then I was put in another room (from that same apartment). In that room, was located the only shower of the apartment where I and at the time 3 other people were living in, but I am sure that was due to covid since the place had space for 2 additional beds - and I bet that there would be a total of 6 people in an apartment during normal times. I did not stay, I resigned without even starting. And the "funniest" part was that I was never told by the agency or the company that I had to cancel my visa. Yes, I had communicated the HR and also the agency about my decision to leave 1 week and a few days prior to my departure from the UAE. When I tried to leave, I was held back at the airport because my visa had not been canceled. The officer there was nice enough to let me try to get in touch with HR and cancel it, which did end up happening a couple of hours before my flight. I would have never thought that trying to go back home would make me feel like a criminal. I can only imagine what the workers who end up giving their passports go through. I realized that if I was going to give up a whole year of my life working 6 days a week, barely making any money, I was better off staying at home. I thought it would have been a good experience to at least do it while I am young and possibly consider it as a career path, however, I never felt so unwelcomed...Especially considering it was a hotel, a place where people deal with people all the time.

Dubai is incredible. 30 years ago it was a dustbowl with very little apart from pearl trading on offer. The transformation is amazing. The city’s leader changes as market trends require which keeps the city at the forefront of excellence. It is expensive , but people are still flocking there to make money. Not as a long term retirement option but an opportunity to be able to afford a retirement lifestyle back home Go! Have a wonderful time ! It’s worth it!

1000% agree with every single thing you’ve said. My hubby worked for fitness first in festival city and was brought over on the idea that he would be paid well and have a great life, were in actual fact he earned £600 a month for 12 hours a day 6 days a week. He also lived in a 2 bed apt with 6 men ! It was dirty and disgusting!! They took his passport and moved him to sharjah to live and commute into the city. When he told them he was leaving, they took two wks to return his passport and in the time being he wasn’t allowed on the staff bus or allowed in the gym. He had to stay in sharjah with everyone he knew in the country going into Dubai for work all day. He finally came home to Ireland, looking homeless and depressed ! It was a horrible experience. I also used to work for emirates as crew. They definitely look after their staff but I have witnessed first hand how migrants from the likes of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Philippines etc are basically treated like rats !! It’s so sad to witness ! We were told not to give the security staff on our buildings food or gifts ! Such a horrible rule considering they were paid £400 a month for 7 days a wk, 12 hours a day. They worked on 3 month rotations around the crew buildings, alternating from night shift for 3 months, to day shift in a different building for 3 months. Dubai is FAKE !!! The rich get richer and the poor stay poor !!

It's a shame that modern slavery still exists. I watched the building of the airport of Dubai, and I was quite shocked at how they treated people . The lower class were really abused, and the fear you could see. If you fear, you make mistakes, and it's always one person who has the responsibility, which I just heard him say. Now that's an eye-opener. 😮 the people live the life of luxury, and there was one part of how these guys lived when they got home.. They worked there 12 hour shift came home to what is called home, lived like rats and there places didn't seem to get cleaned and I would say men do not care, they ate they bathed and they slept. And did all over again.
