I agree. If you understand the concept of comprehensible input, your channel is one of the best. I actually listened to you on spotify because watching videos is annoying--so there are probably many people like me who don't tune in to KZbin. Also, keep in mind, if you do your job well, then people will be "leveling up" out of your content. That is what happened to me. Your videos meet a specific level of speakers, and once I had listened to everything you made, I realized I was able to move up to more difficult podcasts. The fact that I am not listening to you anymore means that your videos work!!❤ You probably have many fans who have used your videos on their journey.

@@nads_artpage imho that's because she very cleverly had those 2 words in her channel name and it's repeated in the titles and descriptions. Good old optimization technique. 聪明😊

I follow some of the bigger mandarin channels, and their videos are often about grammar, must-know phrases, or accent. These kinds of videos appeal to beginners or people with a casual interest in Chinese. They rarely contain lots of comprehensible input, whereas yours are rich with comprehensible input. Your videos are for us serious learners of Chinese. I liked your videos on e.g Australia, Jay Chou and bamboo. I find them really interesting and forget that they are even in Chinese because I am so focused on the meaning and not the actual language - exactly as Stephen Krashen describes comprehensible input. I hope you continue to make these kinds of videos! 谢谢你!

You are one of my favorite mandarin teachers on KZbin because you are so genuine and have so much of your own personality. So many Chinese teachers on KZbin come off as robotic and overly formal and never talk about genuine things. You use humor which is very rare. I’ve had some experience as a KZbinr from forming a podcast led to interviewing Elon Musk to having a show that can’t seem to break a consistent few hundred viewers. It’s very hard to crack the algorithm if you aren’t chasing trending topics or using clickbait titles. KZbin does not often reward people who are trying to be genuine. I have so much sympathy for you in this. It’s so hard, and so tempting to feel bad about yourself. Like you’ve presented yourself to the whole world and they’re all just ignoring you. It’s easy to feel like giving up. However I do think that there really are two main paths to take on KZbin. One is to chase the algorithm by trying to make clickbait titles and thumbnails and chase trending topics. The other is just to keep making stuff, betting on the chance that one of your videos will hit and will grow your audience and through those wins you find your voice and your audience and grow into something really unique. This second path takes a long time and there is in no guarantee of success, but when channels like that succeed it can be really special. I’ve learned to try to set a date for when I will assess my success, then do my best not to think about it at all in the interim. Just focus on making content then when the time comes, stop and look at what is working and what isn’t. Too much time thinking about the algorithm keeps me awake at night. Anyway, I really enjoy your content and your heart in all of it. I’m rooting for you to succeed. Thank you for all your effort and for being so genuine and personal in your approach. Those of us who have found you are blessed to have such an amazing resource.

I think the first reason you mentioned is by far the most important. I remember, when I first started learning Chinese I stumbled across a lower intermediate video of yours but couldn't understand a thing, so I put your channel aside as being not so useful. it was just later in my learning journey where I rediscovered your channel and literally got my mind blown on how well made and easy to understand your videos really are. Maybe it would help to start each video with a very short and very easy Chinese introduction (maybe even show English subs during the intro) about what your channel is about and make the watcher aware about your different levels of content (playlists). That way beginners that don't understand the current video are encouraged to check out your easier content. Anyway, as soon as one has reached a very basic understanding of Chinese your videos are by far the best comprehensible input I've seen.

I genuinely think you are one of the best Chinese learning channels out there, if not the best. I am surprised at times that channels like yours do not have more followers, given how good the videos are. I think the main reason is simply the lack of awareness that channels like yours exist. It's also that 'comprehensible input' is still a relatively 'novel' idea - and that I think most 'serious' learners are sticking to a cirricumlum or course given by an educational instituion. It also seems like the kind of videos that are most popular are those 'quick wins' videos - that give you 100 sentences in a row, or simply run through HSK vocab etc. There may be MANY chinese language learners, but I expect very few stick with it to reach to an intermediate stage where videos like yours really come into play. All this said, I really love what you do on this channel, it's appreciated!

Most language learners aren't familiar with comprehensible input, or find it hard to get used to at first. And, of the people who know about CI, only a few of them happen to be learning Chinese. But, I don't think your channel is failing, it is one of the biggest channels in the space, & it is continually growing. Also, it is hard to find Chinese comprehensible input channels with lots of videos. So the Chinese learners who do know about comprehensible input, are super excited when they find a channel like yours. Your work is helping people!

I think you're great! You make the best comprehensible Chinese content I've found so far. You have a lot of subscribers, but if you think you're not doing well enough, the main reason is probably that too few people believe in the comprehensible input method. Many people don't know or understand it and are convinced that they have to “study hard” to acquire a language. They think that enjoying a video like this is not enough to learn Chinese. But that's all we should be doing (with crosstalk language exchanges if possible)! Please, keep making good content, you'll always have more subscribers as comprehensible input becomes more and more popular over time. ♥

"Failed" is past tense-you’re still in the fight. I don’t want to make anyone feel left out, but you are my absolute favorite source for comprehensible input. I listen to your videos every day while studying 汉字, and I can’t overstate how valuable you are to my Mandarin learning journey-and to literally THOUSANDS of others. think about how many real people out there that is that you are helping in such a meaningful way every day Your clear pronunciation, natural yet beginner-friendly pacing, and instinct for repeating key words make your lessons a joy to follow. You have a wonderful accent and a voice that's soothing and engaging, even over long sessions. And somehow, despite simplifying your vocabulary for beginner lessons, your bright, playful, and funny personality always shines through. I genuinely believe that as more people discover the power and efficiency comprehensible input, unburdened by English subtitles, you’ll be at the forefront of this movement. You’re doing incredible work-work that will have (and is ALREADY having) a lasting impact. Much love from New Zealand, and please keep it up! (please) 💖谢谢您

For what it's worth, I consider your channel by far the most useful for learning Chinese on KZbin. Even in other languages I haven't seen anyone do the concept of comprehensible input as well as you do. And I don't think it makes sense to compare yourself to the likes of Shuo Shuo or Grace. The reason they get so many views is because anyone with a passing interest can watch their videos and feel like they learned something. The number of people who are actually committed to learning Chinese is just far lower, but those will get way more out of your videos.

I think most people, especially beginners, don’t really understand the comprehensible input method, or they lack the patience to listen to content they don’t understand. As for intermediate learners, I think many of them are still accustomed to traditional study methods. They might want detailed explanations of new vocabulary at the end of the video, but your videos don’t include that. However, I absolutely love your videos because they feel like authentic examples of the comprehensible input approach. Your videos are always my go-to for listening practice.💙

You were not the first comprehensible input teacher I found, but you were the first that gave me confidence the approach can work. Your beginner videos are actually at a beginner level, especially the early ones. The design of your scripts is thoughtful, with clear strategies like repetition being used. It is also thoughtful how you have themed the different levels of videos. I started as a beginner and now I can catch a good amount of your speaking in the intermediate videos, with probably 90+% of my instruction coming from you.

First of all, I'd like to say that I really like your videos ! I find them very interesting to watch and I never get bored, which can be a problem with comprehensible input. Personally, I think the reason why you don't make that many views is because your videos are for very specific kind of viewers. Not only do you have to learn chinese, but also you have to be at least upper-beginner/intermediate AND on top of that know about/being interested in the comprehensible input (immersion) method. When you compare with the same kind of youtuber, I think you're quite popular in that very specific domain.

It's not true that you're not popular. If someone searches for comprehensible input on KZbin, your videos are consistently among the top picks. You strike the perfect balance between beginner-friendly material and more intermediate content. For me and many others, you are the essential bridge that helps beginners transition to the intermediate level. The fact that your channel doesn’t yet have hundreds of thousands of subscribers is simply due to its relatively small production scale-but that’s actually a great thing! It allows you to focus on creating high-quality, personalized content that reflects your unique teaching style. When you inevitably reach a much larger audience (and you absolutely deserve to), I hope you’ll be able to maintain the personal touch that makes your videos so special. My advice would be to continue doing what you do best: short, engaging videos (around 10 minutes) about interesting everyday topics, and collaborating with other teachers as you’ve already been doing. Wishing you all the best and continued success

I very rarely leave comments but really feel the need to say - your channel is so valuable particularly because you don't force subtitles! The format of your videos is brilliant. I have only found a handful of channels/videos on YT that I can learn Mandarin from and your channel is actually the most successful one of those. I also like the way you label your videos with the level, it gives motivation to keep going and get to the harder ones. I watched all the easier videos first and rewatched them for a while, since I found I still couldn't understand intermediate ones. But now I am finally starting with the intermediate videos. Maybe I'm old school in today's 'social media influencer world' but I think it's much more meaningful to reach a targeted audience and deliver high quality content for those interested, rather than having more generic/less valuable content which is watched more casually by a larger audience. My opinion anyway ;) Keep it up, I hope you aren't discouraged!

I've been learning mandarin for a little over 2 months now and I appreciate you not having English subtitles as it forces me to improve my listening. I find it hard to do that when other teachers put the English subtitles on screen, as I tend to focus on it instead of what they are saying. I think its fine to have subtitles on beginner videos but I like the intermediate ones without it.

I was shocked to hear you say you had 'failed'; doesnt YT take into account your students' praise? I follow many Chinese teachers in YT, and I think you are one of the very best. And I admire that you are willing to experiment with different forms and mixtures of subtitle, icons, visuals and so on. In the above lesson, my preference would be for a visual including a more unusual word and its translation

I've tried several videos from other Chinese teachers, and you're the best: content, recycling, and video/sound quality. The optimal subtitles for me are your newest method - Chinese characters plus pinyin if I like. I can hover my cursor over the Chinese character if I need to learn a new words or to reinforce one. This allows me to listen the first time without any crutches and to build endurance. Then I can go back and follow along reading the pinyin. And finally, I can put the new words into my vocabulary bank. I would say, though, I would like to make the comments within your platform, but maybe you want all comments to be public - idk. Keep it up! Oh, and I especially find it useful when the section of text below the video is highlighted. Keep spoiling me! lol

For me you are by far the best source for learning Mandarin for several months already. There is just no other content that is so easy to follow, but still very natural spoken and also interesting to listen to. But I have to say that there is one key tool I use that makes your channel so valuable for me, which is a browser extension that lets me watch your videos with Hanzi, Pinyin and a translation to english at the same time. Being able to switch this on and off I get so much from your videos. Without this, many videos would be too hard to watch and I would have to stick with your beginner videos which are, however, not as interesting to listen to, compared to the intermediate videos. I think if all people would know how to use these multiple subtitles, many many more people would use your channel. Not sure, however, what would be a good solution for you to help people here. One other idea is to make more youtube shorts. I know you don't really like them. But I think they are also extremely helpful and it might bring more people to your channel. Otherwise keep up your great work and I think it is not wrong to mostly do content that you yourself like most, because this is what you do best and seeing a person enjoying what they are doing is most times also the most enjoyable to watch.

I'll be honest, I stopped studying Chinese quite some time ago after I realized I wouldn't be going to Taiwan regularly enough or for long enough at a time to make it worthwhile. However, I did put a decent effort into it during my previous stays in Taiwan, during which your videos were among the content I used as input. It was always very easy for me to understand your videos thanks to your clear enunciation and moderate speaking pace. For some reason, KZbin recommended me this latest video of yours even though I haven't looked up anything Chinese-related on KZbin in a while. To my surprise, I was able to completely understand the gist of what you said without subtitles and the list of words I didn't catch was pretty short-and this is after not having heard any Chinese for a year! So you're definitely doing something right, even if it isn't reflected in your subscriber count :)

Your channel is definitely the best resource right now for my current level of Chinese - it's the most engaging content with good audio quality and the right level of vocabulary for a low intermediate-intermediate level. When I first found your videos, I couldn't understand most of the content enough, but the beginner playlists were very useful. When I started out, I mainly used the channels Mandarin Click and Mandarin Bite which make some videos with mostly HSK1 and HSK2 vocabulary, which was incredibly useful. But now that I'm more on HSK4, your videos are absolutely perfect. Tailoring videos to the HSK levels may be a good idea Btw, I click off most Chinese videos if they speak in English or go back and forth, and even if I can't turn off English subtitles it annoys me. Maybe currently there are fewer learners looking for comprehensible input, but it's getting more popular, and you're doing a great job for that audience! A few tips that could help - English subtitles are nice if I can toggle them off and on when needed (and can keep beginners if they're interested in the topics). Your videos where you would put English just for the hardest words were also helpful - Chinese subtitles are great! Please keep them - Sometimes, your videos could benefit from more images, both to make it more engaging and to make more specific vocabulary more understandable. But you often already do a good job with this! - Some HSK1/HSK2 specific videos may attract newer learners that will later stick around for the more entertaining intermediate videos Love the work you're doing, and thanks so much!!

I have no idea what drives "popularity" on KZbin .. maybe paid advertising?? Obviously it is not determined by quality or usefulness. Your videos are excellent and I hope that even if you start doing new things, you also continue to make videos just like the ones you do now. Conversational, natural, personal, with clear speech and good audio quality. Thank you, thank you, thank you! Also, I hope you change the name of this video! "Why am I not (yet) a star on KZbin"

To those who don't know the best way of learning a language you're not popular, because they are blinded and stuck to the traditional method of learning a language so, when they see you're chanel they find it not usual or even uncomfortable that's why they run away. But for me and alot of comprehencible input praisers out there when it comes to mandarim learning you and shifei are the best online teacher for sure!!!!!!!

I can remember a few years ago when your numbers were a lot smaller than today. There are probably many factors, but I do think there's a kind of "exponential effect" that can occur as more people find out about your channel. I'm (sorta) in two Chinese courses at the moment, and both have recommended your channel many times, and in fact it's at the top of at least one list I've seen. So hang in there! You are definitely on the radar :D

I love your content and basically it's the best Chinese instruction I can find on KZbin. If you changed anything too drastically it might not suit my needs! For me the absence of any English is a definite plus. That said, I am a particular kind of learner. I lived in China for a bit, picked up a bit of everyday Chinese and am progressing from that jumping off point. I didn't understand most of what you said in your video but I was still able to get the jist of it, somehow. My goal is not really to speak Chinese well, as I have no real opportunity to speak it now. I mostly want to increase my level of comprehension and I'm sure speaking ability will rise in tandem anyway. An interesting topic of conversation does help but you are also a magnetic personality and I think you should keep doing you because I greater success will come through the sheer force of your personality and the way you do everything so professionally.

You are one of the top on KZbin :) having your own stories helps a lot, because hearing the same old overused hsk-vocab over and over can be annoying :D A lot of teachers stick to textbook and language exam. Its nice to see soneone who has her own content. Also the fact you dont use english HELPS a lot, because I have to think more and a lot sticks naturally. Kepp up the good work.

You are the best! Your content is very clear and always fun to watch. I started looking for beginner videos when I had zero knowledge of Chinese to see if CI would work for absolute beginners. I tried many channels until I found yours. I started by watching all the videos in order less than a year ago. I'm not really at intermediate level yet, but I understand quite a bit of what you are saying here. Keep up the great work!

wow this took a while to write even with the help of Google Translate 🤣 guess I still have a long way to go about output. As for why there are not many more subscribers, I agree with the others that talk about lack of awareness and unfair algorithms, your content is amazing, it's just really hard to go viral for anyone on the internet, I guess. Anyways, I love this channel and really look forward to every new video, you have been helping a lot in improving my Chinese comprehension 🚀

First gotta say, your videos helped me with me using my vocabulary i learned in my online courses for practical use. Second, my wife from 徐州 loves your videos. Now for some constructive feedback. I love the videos with the subtitles that have the word windows in them. For myself, i can get hung up on one key word which makes it hard to understand the part of the video. As for the next, your style is starting to seep into other Chinese youtubers. I noticed 汉字女王 newer stories remind me a little of your style. I give the credit to you :) In the end do what you do and help others. As a fellow teacher it is a very unappreciated job, and you do good! Keep up the passion. One more feedback, maybe up the thumbnail game. Those first clicks are important.

Most people when thinking about language learning does not realize that comprehensible input is the single most effective way to learn a language fluently. It takes 0 effort other than clicking the video for the learner and it help deep memory, thinking in the language and actually pronouncing stuff as a native speaker. If you want to get inspiration for how to succeed, I believe 'dreaming spanish' is the most successful in your niche. Using their tactics could help, like more intriguing thumbnails or gesturing more to increase comprehension, making the viewers learn easier. But overall, do what you feel is right! 🙌

Comparto la opinión de muchos. Eres excelente.

Yeah, good videos. Just have to keep in mind, most learners are beginners (90% would be my guess?), so then the ones focusing on just quick little tips and gimmicks will always be the most popular. Hope you keep up this format though; it's so much harder to find intermediate stuff.

不管什么语,我觉得最好的方法就是“immersion” 如果我还年轻, 我一定去中国住在那里。天天二十四小时听本地人说中文。但是不可能。 所以看听你这样的视频最好。关于字幕, 我喜欢你的方法。。。字幕在transcript可以On Off, 别藏在视频 (hard coded / embedded). 还有我觉得没有拼音字幕会让我focus我的听力。如果有不懂还是新的字, 我就去transcript 找和 copy&paste 在 pleco. 加油👍

I am really surprised that your channel isn't more popular. The videos are great. They're interesting and having all the different levels so clearly displayed are so helpful. I think Chinese isn't a language that is popular with the CI method (in western/English speaking countries anyway) Being European, I think CI works a lot better when I would learn other European/similar languages. Whereas, studying Chinese requires a lot more focused study as the vocabulary is so different. I think your videos are great and I always look forward to seeing new ones. 我也觉得你很可爱。你总是带着可爱的微笑,非常温柔。
