How I Feed My Baby Crested Geckos

hope this helps anyone who has baby geckos who're around a month or younger, the first 6 months are important to get the babies growing properly, under weight and they will grow and develope slow vrs keeping them at the right weights, which will help them develope properly and at the right pace😊

How do they sit so still! I have one crestie that was 3.5 months old now just over 5 months old and the breeder I got it from also fed them with a chopstick. I did watch your videos, so when i got mine I fed them by hand as well, just cant get them to sit still, so I feed while he sits on his cork tube in the little plastic container. I also leave a little food in the tub and remove it in the morning. But I like the interaction and the knowledge I can see him eat.

That’s what mine does. I’ll hand feed him in the evening and leave the little cup in there in case he gets hungry again. I change out the water and food every evening before feeding. I also put a cricket in the tank so he can practice his hunting skills.

Thanks for the video. I'm a new baby crestie owner and I'm afraid that his terrarium is too big. I keep moving the panchea closer to him so he can find it but it won't leave from behind the tree leeves. Can they smell it or do the eventually come out to look for their food and water?

They should be able to smell it, but it can take up to a month for them to adjust to new surroundings and finding their food, just keep an eye on them and if you feel they are looking thin just feed them a lil by hand till they find their food dish, or offering the occasional multi-vitamin dusted baby cricket or dubia roach will keep some food in their belly while they become familar with where their food is:) please dont offer mealworms as they are hard for baby or adult alike to digest due to their hard exo skeleton 😊👍

What brand is the food? And when you say gel do you mean the jelly pod things? If so i would never suggest feeding those. And food brand wise i will always suggest pangea or repashy, other brands commonly dont have the proper nutrients and vitamins

He was really jumpy the first two days when I touched his back really softly but today I let crawl around on me and I hand walked him and he let me actually pet him. if you wanted, you could still offer food in his tank but about twice a week hand feed him to make sure he is getting some food while figuring out where his dish is:) depending on how young the baby is, you may want to only hand feed, but if it's at least 4 months or up, offering food and hand feeding twice a week would be fine, if the baby is younger, i'd offer food daily hand feeding wise and not offer food in a dish till the baby is older:)

I buy their food, its called Pangea crested gecko complete diet, its pretty difficult to make homemade i've heard, gotta have alot of ingredients and vitamins/minerals, so i've never done that because i dont want them to get sick of i do it wrong👍🏻

So at 3 months old they normally wont eat very much, so sometimes i do half of a 1/4th scoop and whatever they dont eat when hand feeding, i leave in the tank so if they get hungry later😊 and normally whether dubia roach or cricket, i will cut them in half(if they arent small enough, if they are small enough, i just tear the head off so the babies can taste the juices) and offer just 1 to 2 per feeding day. Sometimes they wont want any and sometimes they'll scarf it up😊

Thats way too big a tank for a almost 3 gram baby, you should downsize the tank until the baby is at least 15 grams, thats probably why you arent seeing poop.

no you make sense, i know what you mean:) babies under 8 months, or less than 12 grams, i normally feed about half to a full 1/8th teaspoon, as they normally arent hungry enough to eat any more than that since they are being fed every day:) now that 1/8th teaspoon is the dry powder measurement and will grow when water is added

What i've done to train my lil baby to eat from a certain spot, is i'll hand feed them some, then place the dish into the tank & sit them by it, after 3 months the baby knows the food is there and will start to associate that spot with food😊 also i hope you have them both in their own tanks, as different sizes arent safe to house together, as the smaller can be bullied out of food or attacked by the more dominant gecko👍🏻

So best advise would be a vet visit, but until then, have you by chance tried offering a cricket or dubia roach? If not if you try i'd rip the head of the bug off so the gecko can taste the juices, this usually will encourage then to eat the bug. Also what brand of food do you feed, what flavor, and what type of water do you use to mix the food? If the water isnt filtered in some way, chemicals in tap water can cause sickness. Depending on brand and flavor, some geckos will refuse to eat, i've always found either Pangea Reptile or Gentle Geck on amazon with the insect & fruit flavors are best recieved and offer the best bit of protein

Depending on age thats not too bad, as long as its every evening you are feeding, i normally use a stir straw for coffee to feed so i'm not totally sure how much food i feed vrs yours, but rule of thumb is half of a 1/8th teaspoon for babies under 3 months old, its a small amount but they dont have very big bellies. As they grow if they still act hungry i'll offer a lil more, once the hit 3 to 5 months a full 1/8th would be more appropriate 😊

I have a space heater in the reptile room to keep it around 72-76, i dont use heat since almost any bulb out there gets way hotter than what they are supposed to have. It also dries out the air super fast. I've heard some use heat pads but you' have to have it on a thermostat to make sure it didnt burn the gecko, and that doesnt heat the air, only 1 tin lil area, so not really worth using

@@professormoo2 50 watts is way too hot so yes i would swap that for a small bulb if you want to use heat. You'll need to mist the tank 2 to 3 times a day vrs once though since that heat will dry the tank out. And i actually just took in today a gecko with MBD because the lady was mainly feeding insects because her gecko didnt like the diet(she was feeding flukers which is a poor choise, so it would have still happened due to the low amount of vitamins and minerals in that diet anyways) so with cresteds i always suggest pangea complete diet(fruit n insects and papaya are the most liked flavors i've found with mine) or repashy, if you feed crickets it needs to be a once a week treat and dusted in calcium or multi-vitamin powder. Otherwise the gecko will start to refuse the gecko diet because it wants the crickets(i've had that happen before in the past and learned that i couldnt feed crickets too often😅) they are like kids and will refuse their meal because they want snacks lol

Hmm I wonder if this would work for my 3 year old crested? My friend got tired of him and gave him to me a year ago. He looks healthy, but I've never had one. She only fed him crickets his first 2 years she had him and he refuses the nectar food, little fruity cubes and every other crested food I've bought. I've tried different brands, different flavors, even tried human baby food. I've never tried just putting it on his mouth tho. Hes active tho but from what I've read, crickets are a treat, so I'll try this. Just got some pangea mango diet he's ignoring right now.

I'm actually surprised he's still alive after 2 years, is he showing any signs of MBD? Unless your friend was dusting the crickets with calcium. Also i would only stick to diets made for them and stay away from baby foods as they can be high in sugar. As for those orange cube things those are garbage so i wouldnt suggest trying to feed those to him😊 pangea or repashy are both good brands to start with, but with geckos if you spoil them on crickets, they will refuse their complete diets, so you are gonna have to work at finding a flavor he'll like, could try starting with one that has insects in it, that may help:) and if he will hold still enough hand feeding will help you bond with him too:)

@@SRCReptiles I had to look up MBD, but he's not showing those signs. The light probably helps. I've seen him even hold his beautiful tail up like a puppy before but not often. I literally have zero knowledge on these lizards so I appreciate you replying. And of course those orange cubes are the only other thing he's ate in the year I've had him but only twice. Then he started refusing those as well. Junk food gecko. He's seems a bit plumper than most pics I've seen of them but he hops around his tank nicely at night, he's not lethargic at all. I do feed the crickets this vitamin gel, which probably helps. He doesn't panic when I've grabbed him to clean his tank but I don't handle him often as I have to take him to a safe room away from my two cats. Its funny, he teases them. Jumps right at the glass at them with no fear. But of course I wouldn't trust them to not harm him if they had the opportunity. I didn't think a creature like him would have a real personality but he does. I once didn't feed him any crickets for over a week trying to force him to try his food but I gave in after he refused it. Can't let him starve. I've gotten attached to him. While bowl training my yearlings, they went about 12 days without eating till they finally figured out i wasnt going to hand feed them anymore, so for an adult it wont hurt him to go with out, as he will eat when he is hungery😊

Im 52, never owned lizards as I've found them as a child and they always died so I've stayed away from owning them. Luckily these geckos aren't so needy with heat and such. I didn't even know there were different varieties til I watched this video. Mine has 3 colors or shades and a beautiful pattern. I'll have to figure out what his coloring is called now as well. I'd probably hand feed mainly to ensure its getting food, as babies they will hide and normally dont eat from a dish if its on the ground(if you have a magnetic raised dish, then they sometimes will eat from that) bathroom wise any droppings and pee is always a good sign, i normally have a paper towel mine sit on while i feed so they dont pee on me or rub food on my clothes:)

I have a few questions:) also sometimes it may take up to a month for them to find their food and eat it, so you need to give the baby time to settle in. What flavors have you tried? How runny did you make the food? Did you try to pull the cricket's head off when offering it(the juices almost always entice them to eat it)? Is the baby's dish on the tank floor or is it elevated?

@@SRCReptiles We have tried watermelon, papaya, and apricot flavored so far. We have tried different soupy, normal, and thicker meals to see what she would like but hasn’t ate any of them. The dish is on the floor. We have never offered her a cricket we’ve just put them in there.

@@Justin49285 i'd suggest not having loose crickets in there as they can bite the baby, i'd only offer them crickets that have just been killed untill they are older. Fruit & insects always seems to be a big hit with babies, i also have those other flavors you'd tried and mine will only eat the fruit & unsects😂 and the dish being on the floor works fine as they seem more willing to eat from a floor dish vrs elevated when they are babies.

@@Justin49285 so normally its suggested to have it like a ketchup consistency, so if you have ketchup around you could get an idea from how smooth it is, too thick and they'll have issues eating it and too thin it'll dilute it too much, so you want it inbetween😊 i hope that makes sense😅

If you go to Pangea reptile . Com thats where the powdered diets are, you dont buy the actual fruits and bugs and mix them yourself😊👍

@@CrazyPoodle the powdered diet has all their vitamins and minerals and nutrients, and you mix it with water so its not a powder when they get it. Fruits can have too much sugar and certain vitamins they can get too much of depending on the fruit, and insects just dont have enough vitamins or protien in them

My crested gecko is 2 years old and is that size I feed him everyday,he has a big enough cage, he drinks water, but he’s not gaining weight :( idk if he’s a slow grower or not I’m gonna try to feed insects to see if that works ( currently he eats pangea insect mix and I feed him to make sure he does eat it)

Without his past and current weights i cant really take a guess. Thats the only way to know weither or not he's been gaining and or losing weight. They may look like they arent gaining when they have been. If he doesnt seem to be gaining then i immediately think parasites may be the cause. Also at 2 years old you should be feeding once every 2 to 3 days. Once a day is alot of food, even if he is unhealthy. I'd suggest a vet visit and to start keeping track once a month of what he weighs

@@SRCReptiles it’s in a 12x12x18 exo terra and the tank has about 70-75% humidity the temp ranges from 72-76°F

@@SRCReptiles there’s lots of plants and a hide on the ground that reaches up pretty high in the tank, my gecko also mostly wedges himself between the exo terra background and the tall hide but he likes being on the ground I also have climb able branches in there

@@okay4468 at 2 he should be in an 18x18x18 at minimum, the 12x12x18s are good for gecks at 8 months to a year and a half, but once they hit 2 they should be upgraded. Also do you allow the humidity to dry out before misting or is the hunidity always high?

Normally when you handfeed it helps them calm down over time, but some will always be kinda jumpy, i have an adult like that, you just got to be patient, though sometimes thats hard lol

Lol well I'm stuck with 2 baby crested and a juv leopard thanks to my Mother. Not even a week goes by after she bought them and she decided she didn't have time for them. I stopped dealing with reptiles ten years ago and well.......looks like I'm back to it lol dammit 😆 good thing I never forgot how to care for them. There goes my beer money. Lol son of a ......lol ok ok so I'm on this video to refresh my memory a bit lol there I admit I forgot a little bit...got this pouch of grounded baby crested gecko food smells like bananas but it has insect larvae and a paragraph of other stuff. Just needed to see how much to feed in one sitting. Got it stirred up in a bottle cap with a little water like baby food. Smells good actually 😜 just don't want to over feed etc

Normally i kinda gauge it off when they start to not want to eat the food off their lips, or if they rub the food off their lips alot

It also depends on the age of your gecko, I use coffee stir straws to mix and give the food, and normally if they are under 3 months old they only will eat a couple globs as where a older 6 to 8 month baby can eat a out 5 to 6 globs on the straw, making sure its about ketchup thinkness, not to drippy but not too thick
