I love how you actually explain the benefits of the supplements!
@jessicab93475 жыл бұрын
Hey Jill! I can really appreciate this video as I’m crazy into diet as well. What I feed my horses seems overcomplicated to others too! I noticed you talked about really being into nutrition for their hooves- with that, the best thing you can do is lower their iron intake, and increase their copper and zinc intake to improve the ratios. Horses generally get a LOT of iron in their forage, especially hay, and little copper and zinc. Iron competes for absorption in the body with both of these vital nutrients, and since they are so vital to the horse for hoof health, this ratio is very important! The best thing to do would be to test your hay for it’s nutrient levels (many people like Equi Analytical for this) and balance what you feed with that. Personally, this isn’t an easy option for me as my hay source frequently changes, so I went off an average analysis of hay and supplement with California Trace (has no added iron, and plenty of copper and zinc, along with other nutrients). The Plus version of it also has probiotics! On this diet, my horses need no grain/concentrated feed and have flourished in every way. They get CoolStance, Timothy Pellets, beet pulp, California Trace, salt, and freshly ground flax seed. These links may help explain a bit more: www.drkellon.com www.hoofrehab.com/diet.html forageplustalk.co.uk/iron-overload-in-horses-by-dr-kellon/ Along with this, if you’re on Facebook, the group Hoof Rehab Help has some very knowledgeable people who will help.

Your first try to pronounce „glänzen“ is very close to the way Germans say it :) the german translation is „shine“. If you wanna get really fancy you can say the German word for three. It’s „drei“ pronounced kinda like „dry“ 😁

Curious on why you feed both flax and Glanzen? In terms of coat shiny-ness, they'd do a similar job to each other - could probably just feed flax (or one or the other, etc) to save a few bucks!

Hey! I just got an ottb in January and have been struggling with his diet. I use a website called feedxl.com and it breaks everything down ans tells me where there are holes in his diet of if he's getting to much of something. That might help you manage all those supplements and see if you need to adjust them.

in England i find out more natural supplements arent powders, but more like herbs. and we like to feed chaff to balance out their feed. ofc they all get grass or hay 24/7 and i dont like him to go more than 10 mins before a ride without eating hay or something. also your grain has minimal sugar, which is great! but then you put the biotin with molasses in? is this because it then balances out to still not much sugar?

At our barn we feed all of the horses Crypto Aero and every horse we’ve switched to Crypto we have seen a noticeable difference in their mane/tail and their coat especially and all the horses love it! It only has a 4.20% concentration which is a little more than Zoe and Mac are getting now but it’s still pretty low. Also you might be able to cut out a couple supplements. Just thought I would share 🥰

Ginger when researched in horses, has been shown to have cardio benefits, but also caused inflammation. Just a heads up with that promo product you received that contains ginger root. You should be very careful with herbal ingredients for horses. Many have not been researched, or if they have been researched, it's been in humans, not in horses...which is not necessarily likely to cross over species to species. Just a heads up!

Hey girl, love your video! Just wanted to say to double check the label on your probios on how much to feed your horses! (You might have added the correct amount off camera I just don’t know lol) When I read the label on mine it said horses should get 2-3 scoops a day so I would recommend uping their intake of that just to make it more effective! (that’s also if you didn’t add that into their other meal of the day... I like to do mine all at the end of the day;) )

I don’t think it’s a overkill at all! I’d double check your biotin it worries me that molasses is in there which probably makes the horses want to eat it but it’s also straight sugar and a big no no! You should be able to get pure biotin in a powder form without all the additives!
@lillerella5 жыл бұрын
Wow straight grain and supplements are so different a way to feed to how we feed in New Zealand we concentrate on fibre with probiotics I don’t know anyone that feeds like this ? I have worked with many off the track tb’s recovering from ulcers
@bonniecox77495 жыл бұрын
lillerella right? It’s so different, I’m in Australia and we always feed heaps of chaff with the grain
@kbequestrian1285 жыл бұрын
lillerella I’m also in nz and it’s a very american thing to not also use fibre in the feed!
@emmadewson71495 жыл бұрын
To be fair, if you are feeding enough hay/grass, then there’s not a lot of point feeding chaff as well. I’ve done both, at one point my horses were getting their pellets on top of a slab of Lucerne, in addition to adlib meadow hay and grass. Never had an issue.
@lillerella5 жыл бұрын
KB Equestrian everytime I’ve been in the states riding & I’ve seen beet used in place of fibre but never supplements with grain I’d imagine the dust wastage to be high & breakdown in stomach to be inconsistent feeding the aloe would have very little benefit in this application
@kbequestrian1285 жыл бұрын
Emma Dewson the chaff along with the pellets helps with digestion. Just feeding grain alone means that the gut does not have a long source of fibre which is needed to soak up and utilise gastric acid. It may be ok with smaller portions like Zoe’s, but for Mac I would be splitting his feed into two meals and adding a fibre source.

I hope you or someone else can help 😆 My horse is getting too many carbs in her diet and I have no idea how to limit it. I train with R+ so I can’t really stop feeding her treats (she prefers treat rewards over scratch rewards). I use two types of treats and they both are sugar free. She gets 24/7 hay and her grain is low carb too. What treats do you use? I have a feeling it has to be from the ones I’m giving her but I still have no idea.

I also wanted to write a quick note about the turmeric. Without freshly ground black pepper and a fat source (oil) you may as well save your pennies and not feed it at all. It is not water soluble, so needs the oil for absorption and the piperine in the pepper allows for the body to make better use of the Tumeric as it remains in the body for longer so that it is more readily utilised and activated. As for the lack of fibre in your feed, horses should ideally be eating product that is at least 10cm in length (hay, long grass etc) as to avoid the food sitting on the bottom of the stomach while being processed which leaves the stomach lining vulnerable. If you could perhaps add some soaked hay cubes or chaff this would allow for even better digestion 😊

Only thing I would change about what you're doing is drop the biotin and use a hoof supplement that has higher amounts of Zinc and Copper. Horses get a lot of Iron in their diets in their hay, grain, and water. Iron inhibits the absorption of key nutrients and horses are actually fairly intolerant to iron... can only truly tolerate 500ppm - which is not a lot. Iron imbalance issues show up in the feet - ie crumbly hoof, cracks, shelly feet etc. So to counter balance it, you feed Zinc and Copper to help balance the ratio. Feeding straight biotin only encourages the foot to grow more/faster, not better quality hoof. All the other supplements you are feeding are right on. Flax is a wonderful source of Omegas with one of the best ratios possible. Omega 3 should be higher than Omega 6. High omega 6 can encourage inflammation if not properly balanced with a higher Omega 3. And last but not least, when calculating the amount of sugar in a feed, make sure you add in Starch. That gives you the NSC% which is really what you should be looking at. It's best if you can keep it under 12% but if you have a horse that's metabolic or sensitive (possibly ulcers) be sure to get something under 10% NSC. Just some helpful hints but you're definitely on the right track!

Liz Haase I just do hay in the winter, grass in the summer. In the summer, they get a couple cups each of alfalfa pellets only in the morning (dumor for horses). And if needed, the dumor goat feed is really good. I mix the goat sweet feed and goat pellets from dumor and use that for grain. Only like a cup each a day tho. If they are babies, they should be getting unlimited grain until the are three months old. Hope this helped 😁
