It is a good thing he had parents to support him the whole time he was not working. I went overseas too but worked long hours doing menial jobs because my parents had no money. It is was hell living with so many students in an apartment to save money. My roommates would fight and want to move out. It meant constantly moving. They spoke Hindi or Bengali and I didn't so I never got into the arguments about ridiculous things. I was Indian but I grew up in Africa where there was only one University for the whole country. And the seats were reserved for the locals. The law in the US at the time was that students could only work only 20 hours a week, but I needed to work illegally 35+hours to make my tuition and living expenses. I did everything including picking grapes, vegetables etc on a farm. Of course I was not as good as the Hispanic workers. I learnt how incredibly hard workering the Hispanics are. I feel sorry for them as they have to do those jobs for the rest of their lives as they lack the education to go to college. I got to find them as the best people, better than our own people. So kind and joke around. They used to call me the Karate Kid but I still not pick like they could. And the sad part is they are treated poorly in the US when they are keeping this country going. I ended up even getting my Masters in Chemistry but unfortunately soon after I got ill and could not work anymore. So I could not reap the benefit of my education. I think part of the cause was the stress and eating poorly to save money took a toll on my body. But the biggest factor I believe was my time working at a lab that did not have the proper safety equipment. Some of our organic extractions occurred in trailers on site, which was illegal as they were not certified under the lab. They didn't have any ventilation hood nor were the trailers under a negative pressure with proper venting to the outside. The owner was a Indian businessman that owned that chemical laboratory with several other different businesses. I believe the toxic chemicals I was handling on a daily basis may have had a hand in my illness. But it was a way to get sponsored for the Green Card. The owner was extremely wealthy but he was very stingy, making one work long hours with a very low salary, but the trade off was he did sponsor me. Of course today I would never risk my life for a work permit. I thought i would get my Green Card and get out but it took four long years as he kept delaying the process. I wish my parents had the money to help me when I needed it but that is the luck of the draw. It could be worse, like the poor migrant laborers in the US. So when ever you think you have it bad, there is always some one that has it worse than you. Hopefully others can learn from this when they go overseas to study without money. Be aware of people that will try to exploit you when you are away from family and desperate to survive. It is not worth sometimes and best to go back home.
