This summer, I played through three Persona games for the first time. Here are my unfiltered, very casual reactions to the games that single-handedly conditioned me to RPGs, and changed my life altogether. This isn't a very analytical video - this is just me reflecting on some games I really enjoyed.

If her social link wasn’t just about cooking and going other stores and talking about her being bullied I wish they did more on her family issues and helping her bond with natsuki and fix their past of being in a abusive relationship and after doing many things they fix it and be better friends and her resolution with natsuki leaving would be more effective and help with her parents for abandoning her for a week so it doesn’t affect her public record and she asks minato to help her to give her more confidence and stand up against them and tell them what they did wrong and they apologize and we get teased by Fuuka mom about us and she blushes and her father would approve us if they were in a relationship and we get more appreciated if we did get top score for being smart and called handsome with our charm and we get more social links events spending time with Fuuka and her parents

The point of the game is to never turn your back from the truth. Even with the very first thing that happens to you, you could just brush it off and forget about it as if it was just a minor thing that doesn't even matter. But if you were to look into it, you'll see that it isn't just a minor thing and that there's more to it than you realize.

Persona 4 Golden is a game I will forever hold as the best JRPG I have ever played. And I will never play it again. Those characters were so real to me that I feel like they’re old friends. Talking to people about Yukiko, Yosuke, Teddy, Kanji, Naoto, Chie, Marie, Rise, Nanako and spring many more is like talking about friends we had growing up. I didn’t have friends growing up. I moved all the time. I don’t have a childhood to look back on. I don’t have friends really at all just due to my constant motion back and forth through life. But I can sit here and think back through my summer in Inaba, and all the memories I have with that cast. And I know someday I can find the train back there somehow. I know I’ll see them again. I’ll never play it again, so the illusion that I can encounter that place once more is never broken.

PlutOh steam! The story there is that I have been interested in P5 since it’s release back on the PS3/4 cause of its style, but I was 16 and my parents were conservative soooo no. Then when I got old enough to buy a PS4 the price just kept getting more unreasonable and I put it off and put it off. So when I heard the announcement that P4G (really ANY persona game) was coming to PC, I cleared my week, bought the game.... and played it *twice* in that week lol
@m.webster1261
@m.webster1261 3 жыл бұрын
PlutOh from there it became an obsession and I broke down and bought a PS2/PS4 to play P3 and P5. Now I’ve played 3FES, 4, 4G, and 5, and I literally just started Royal. I really wish I had played this game when I was 15 or 16. If I had I’d probably be a much better person for it. High School would’ve probably looked very different for me.. but even if I’m late to the party, I’m now addicted to SMT games as a whole (Tokyo Mirage Sessions is unironically one the best JRPG experiences I’ve ever had barring Persona, with P4 still being my favorite), and I’m about to buy a 3DS to keep going through the backlog. Then up next on the list is waiting on Persona 6. I hate Sony, and I don’t like the PlayStation platform. But Atlus has convinced to buy that console the instant Persona 6 is released. (Or maybe, just maybe, we can get it on PC... maybe...?)

I think this is one of your best videos yet. It was really cathartic to experience your first time with Personally vicariously this last summer. Seeing what you'd think of the plot points, who you'd romance, and I ESPECIALLY was convinced you would fall in love with the music. Waiting for you to finally hear Heaven was agonizing. In retrospect, it is VERY good that you started with Persona 4, and I'll probably be steadfast in my recommendations of it for newcomers. There was a part of me that wondered if even playing Persona 4 before Persona 3 would be a bit much for people, but judging by your experience, people who love Persona LOVE Persona. I think this video is a fascinating example of just how powerful its premise is; how easy it is for the idea of a JRPG social simulator to grip someone. I'm glad I'll have another person to talk with when Persona 6 comes out. I'm sure we'll be going crazy when that happens. I really look forward to it.

Fun fact, my sister in law worked a sushi place where there was a female manager. One of the sushi chefs was a Japanese man who would flat out refuse to listen to her and do what she said because she was a woman. She had to find a male manager to tell him what to do. "Fuuka doesn't really do anything in the plot." That's not at all true, her persona awakening literally saved the party keeping up with the switches of the shadows weaknesses. She sensed that the shadow in the mall was under them and they had to go below to fight it. Helped them figure out brekaing the right mirrors was the way to find the lovers true form. Literally used her computer skills to help fix the distorted messed up video for yukari so she could see her father's final message properly And genuinely was the glue that held the group together with her being positive and willing to lend an ear to the others of the group cause they were her family. Yet you liked yukiko who acutally didn't do anything in the story XD
@JackiW
@JackiW 3 жыл бұрын
Hummm. Yukiko doesn't do much in terms of story, that's true. But the way how I see it is that if Yukiko wasn't the first victim you go actively to rescue, I do wonder if Yosuke and Yu would have continued their search for the murderer. Would Chie be part of the team without her being a victim? Would they have gained the same kind of determination if it was just Saki who died? Well, we can't know for sure. But she is definitely a part of their reason why they continued their operations. Especially after they were successful in rescuing her. Also, what you say about Fuuka is very true. I liked her character, despite not really being "out there."

As a fellow massive spoiler phobic, you can do it, but really finding out spoilers doesn't ruin anything, if anything they should be used as fuel, once you hear a spoiler just get interested as in how did it reach that specific plot point? Which events led to it? Spoilers exist because people want to talk about things they experienced which i think is really important, that's how we find out about awesome series, also spoilers a lot of the time are completely inaccurate, or you simply don't know the context so there's just no point worrying about them so much, there's nothing wrong about avoiding spoilers, i can just say from personal experience that it'll probably just hurt you on the long run hating spoilers. Note: also i wouldn't watch the video either if i hadn't played Personas yet cause im still super strict with spoilers, just less so nowadays, i just felt like giving you the shout cause i felt like i could relate.

@@dimensionalnemesis8636 No, that doesn't really work for me, because Persona 4 kinda was already spoiled big time. So story goes like that, I hadn't really expressed any interest in to persona series before P4G came to steam. The thing is I already knew who is the real killer is, I don't know how, I don't know when (prolly some shit bad who relates to Adachi was posting his artwork of him and it somehow imprinted over the years) so when I played P4G i felt like something wasn't right, and when the big twist happened, it did nothing to me. @boollye
@boollye 3 жыл бұрын
people sometimes fail to understand that morgana is very insecure for not having what he considers a worthy goal to stay with the phantom thieves, as well as being eventually replaced on the team. he hides that by acting overly confident in himself and ryuji gets to be the butt of his mighty attitude most of the time. his temper tantrum during okumura's arc was bound to happen, considering that futaba took his role as the navigator and had been doing a much better job than him. it's an understandable behavior, but i think that both he and ryuji should've apologized for being assholes to each other, which should've been a turning point in their friendship. i actually think the anime handled this scene quite well, surprisingly, although i still think the timing was really bad because mona ended up stealing the spotlight from haru and her character arc

And you actually played them in the same order I did. But here's what I got to say, if you don't like the first person type of dungeon crawling, you ain't losing much by not playing persona 1, but I cannot say enough that people should play 2 with the fun and rewarding rumour system in the game and the fact that fusion spells are still in persona at this point ( I don't count p3p but p3 does have it) and the really fun combat system. But I can kinda see RNG-MOS's point? kinda, I'm not a big fan of gatekeeping but usually when people say they are a big fan of something, you'd assume they played or at least know of all the games but more often then not I see a lot of so called fans of persona but then say something like scramble or dancing all night is a bad or trash game because it is a spin off or because it isn't persona without the social aspect when persona when persona itself is a spinoff and persona 1 & 2 did not have that social aspect when persona is mainly focused on high school students and the relation pretty much ends there for most of em and not the social aspect found in p3, 4 and 5

It felt like fighting the worst aspects of myself, I could see myself easily becoming someone just like Adachi.
@adamtideman4953

I don't think Maruki was a good antagonist because the conflict between Maruki and the Phantom Thieves is a weak one with no real stakes. What happens if Maruki wins? You go back to a reality where everyone is happy but it's not real. Oh, the horror! Hell, I even prefer the ending where Maruki wins over the actual "good ending" where the Phantom Thieves wins because Atlus doesn't do a good job of explaining why you'd want to oppose Maruki. Atlus tried to make Maruki an antagonist that you can understand, someone who sees themself as the hero of their story which is a good thing but the problem is they went too far on this aspect to the point where you don't have much motivation to stop Maruki. The only reason we're told to stop Maruki is: well, Marukis reality isn't real so we have to stop him which isn't much incentive. I wish Royal would've gone deeper into why living in a reality where everything is perfect and everyone are happy is something bad because of how it removes the possibility of growth and individuality which they tried to do with Kasumis character but this is something that's not really explored properly, hence why I believe Maruki is a well written character but not a good antagonist.
@sonofbelz
@sonofbelz Жыл бұрын
@@adamtideman4953 You missed the point. It's not that the reality isn't "real" it's that it strips everyone in it of their free will and everyone lives "happy" according to Maruki. It's no different than what Yaldabaoth did except with a more human presentation. Free will being the main thing that the entire game, not just royal, is based around and what all the protagonists ultimately fight for it's pretty easy to see why they would try to stop Maruki.

My favorite character in all of Persona is Maruki. I love how isn’t a typical villain and the Phantom Thieves question whether stopping him is the right thing. I also love the symbolism with his persona being Azathoth and how the reality he wants is only a dream. But, what made him my favorite character is the line he says in the ending cutscene, “If you find yourself struggling in life...You can start over, like me...Remember that.” That line struck a cord with me and helped me realize that I wasn’t stuck in my terrible way of life. It may not connect to his character as well as some of the other things I’ve mentioned, but it helped me turn my life around and I’ve been changing my life for the better ever since I heard it. I never would’ve thought that a simple sentence could help me realize so many problems with my life and tell me I can change. Even though there are hardships in our life, they make us grow and change as people even if we’ve only been running from them up until that point. I’m glad that Maruki taught me that and that’s why he is my favorite Persona character. I only hope Persona 6 keeps the ball rolling.

As much as I'm sure I'll finish the video in a moment, just finished the Persona 4 section and I feel rather inspired at the moment before these thoughts leave me. Persona 4's my favorite game of all time. I first played it when I was 16, which... man, that panned out well, didn't it? To not get too weighty for the KZbin comments section of all things, I found the struggles that the characters were going through - and most specifically, Kanji's and Naoto's - to hit closer than anything else ever had. The ability to speak to those characters, to invest myself in them and see their own resolutions and desires to grow, influenced me in ways so intrinsic to how I view the world that I don't have the words to describe it. Until that point, I'd used video games as my favorite medium, something I could be entertained by, learn from, immerse myself in. Never before had I felt it heal or see it encourage growth. The feelings you expressed - that drive to see the characters achieve the resolutions they're seeking, that pain of having to leave the game behind - are so earnestly put. There is no game I love seeing others play and experience than this one, as the ability to talk about it, see what they learned, who they like and what resonates with them. So I am very, very glad to see how much you ended up enjoying the game. I have PLENTY of questions and little discussion bits I wanna ask just based on your impressions expressed, and I don't agree on everything (I prefer the characters staying underleveled so that you can't just plow through dungeons using them as secondary SP sources, and think that the backtracking through dungeons reinforces the limitations that SP establishes, you don't even MENTION how dating Naoto would break Kanji's heart, jerk), but more than that... just hearing these experiences is always so encouraging. And I have to thank you, so much, for sharing them. I suppose I'll watch the rest of the damn video now.

Naoto is actually fully female, but aside from that and a few other minor blemishes, it was overall a pretty good video. EDIT: Okay, before any more people try to yell at me saying that I'm wrong, let me explain. Naoto's overall arc revolves around the sexism and age hierarchy of the Japanese Police Force. Because of this, Naoto was forced to adopt a Male image in order to fit in at the police. Eventually, she was thrown into the TV, where her most deepest, darkest feeling, the thought of being born a man instead of a woman, became exaggerated in the form of her Shadow. Thanks to the Investigation Team, she learns that being a woman isn't so bad.

There’s really something about this series, isn’t there? I picked up Persona 5 Royal, having heard nothing about the game, and...I don’t think I’ve ever been more impacted by a game. It inspired me to start a KZbin channel, and it inspired me to explore the creative possibilities that I always WANTED to explore, however, my fear of making a mistake made me constantly tell myself: “I’ll get to that later!”. It’s given me the inspiration to pursue the things I believe in doing RIGHT NOW, and I couldn’t be more grateful to it for that. It also made me appreciate the bonds I have with those closest to me-not that I didn’t already, but it made me appreciate just what it meant to have people in my life; the privilege of that, the power of that, to pick me back up when I fall down and give me the push I need to succeed at everything I believe in doing; this feels like hyperbole, but it’s completely true: this game changed my life. I aspire to create art that has this kind of impact on someone. I loved watching this, and sensing that same passion within you!

The moment with Kanji about him liking things that are feminine reminded me of when some older guy told me, he knows his socks are weird because they have a green and blue design on them and should be women's socks, I lifted my shirt and showed him like dude I wear a pink unicorn belt with rainbows on it and I have a wife, don't be weird about your socks if you like them wear them proudly and forget anyone who says differently.

Persona 4 changed my life and shook me to the core by the time the credits rolled. I was never the same again. My world became much more hopeful and full of color. So I just sat and watched this entire thing, and all I can think to say is, for the first time since I beat persona 5, then 3, then 4, I feel like this summed up everything I felt about these games, good bad and otherwise, and how I came to love the series. Watching, or rather hearing, you go through this journey, hearing your thoughts about the series go from curiosity to the same love of the series I'm sure most of us who play them feel, was great to watch and listen to. Thank you for making this video and sharing your persona journey with us.

This is my favorite of your videos. You're so right about the subtle and not so subtle messaging making a big impression on me back in 2008. While Persona doesn't always handle that stuff perfectly, it was mostly clear that the game's heart was in the right place, and it was a good exposure to some mature themes and ideas that would become much more important to me years later.

Amazing video. I myself have been on a Persona binge the past few months, I finished P4G and moved on to P5R which I've nearly finished. P4G is most definitely my fave game in the series, the characters in it are just outstanding, and like yourself, once it was over I went out of my way to play the spin-off games just to spend more time in that world. These games do such an incredible job at making you care about everyone in them.

Wait/Stand By is a command in P3 because sometimes you might want a shadow to remain knocked down so it loses it's turn, so either you wait or you tell your party members to wait. Unlike P4 and P5, in P3 both you and the shadows lose a turn when getting up from being knocked down.

I'll never forget how I got introduced to this series. Summer of 2007, and im chillin at my house playing KH2 for the umpteenth time. And my doorbell rings. My best friend at the time is standing outside and he's holding the game case to Persona 3 at the door's window. The second I open the door he bursts in, saying how I gotta check this game out. The only elevator pitch he gives is that he says the characters shoot themselves. Understandably, my response is pretty much a "lolwut?" But I was intrigued. So we put his copy in my PS2, and I started my own save file. He had already made it a considerable way through the game but was happy to spend that entire afternoon watching me experience the game for the first time, as well as walk me through the sim mechanics. We spent the whole afternoon getting me started on the game. I made it all the way to the first full moon boss. Needless to say, I was hooked. The following day, I went to my local game store and used up my allowance to buy my own copy. I played ghat game all summer and my friend and I gushed about it for weeks, sharing each other's progress and discussing strategies when we'd get stuck. It was amazing. I never thought a better game was ever going to be made until they announced P4. I was so hyped about it. I got so many of my friends into the series when they were curious about P4, since it had so much publicity. I did the same thing my friend did and told them about P3 and they all loved it. It brought me so much joy to see Persona grow in popularity over time. I hope it continues to be a smash hit of a series. And I definitely can't wait until 6 happens.

I don't even know who you are, but right now, this title "How I Fell in Love with Persona" intrigues me. Very excited to hear what you think about these wonderful games! (Also, heck yeah. Before I even watch the video I'm just thinking that Persona 4 really got me into JRPGS and really anime So after the Pokemon addiction everyone has in their growing life, I somehow found more anime. Somehow I stumbled upon the Persona 4 anime and loved it with every fiber of my being. It really made me want to explore more anime and considering it was based on a game, play the game. So after years of watching Omega Evolution videos on it, I got a Vita and dived into Persona 4 Golden. Easily one of my favorite games. Probably one of my favorite casts in fiction. Trying to fill the hole left by Persona 4's story left me 2 options. Watch more anime. Play more JRPGS. I did both, though the former more than the latter until lately. Among other things, it led me to FF7, also one of my favorite games and also played on my Vita. Now I'm trying to play all of the other Personas and maybe an SMT or two to capture some of the feelings of Persona 4 or get new ones. Currently going through Persona 3 FES (even though I really like controlling my party) and looking forward to getting a PC where Persona 5 can run more smoothly on emulation. Probably gonna try Persona 2 EP and IS one day and the PSP Persona 1. My god, don't play the PS1 version for anything besides the music. It's so slow man. I really tried. I got fairly far into the game. Like around level 30. It was agony. Anyway, Persona 4 changed me. For that I'm eternally thankful. Also it's a damn good game.

I don't know if you noticed but when Futaba awakened her persona it was different from everyone else's. Everyone else had to pull off their mask. Her's was more like persona 4 in that she had to accept her inner self. That shows a connection (among others) that it's connected to p4, which is connected to p3.

Hey Liam Triforce great video! I been a huge fan of Persona and Megami Tensei for 7 years. So I'm glad you fell in love not only Persona but grew appreciate to turn based JRPGs. Anyway I just wanna say while Nocturne is a great game. It's more gameplay focused than plot focused. If you want to play a game that's more plot and character focused then I recommend Digital Devil Saga 1 and 2. In the video you mentioned Fire Emblem Awakening. If you like that then I also recommend the Devil Survivor games on 3DS. Those games fuses Persona elements with tactical gameplay as well as elements from Megami Tensei as a whole. It's a great game. With the first game tackling things that have aged very well and is scarily accurate to current real life events. That's just my advice you don't have to listen to it if don't want, just what I suggest if you want to branch out and get into Megami Tensei as a whole. I think Nocturne should be saved for a little later.

I went to college in a big city, and studied abroad in France and Japan, which is where the Persona 3 ideas and concepts blend with me. Persona 3 resonates with me even further due to my struggles with mortality while abroad.
