@@obliqrecordingsawesome video dude! had to sub! 👍🏻 where are you located? i do a lot of crystal hunting/Rockhounding here in South Wales (UK) but the only nice truly clear and Euhedral piece of Quartz i've managed to find that had a terminated top and faces was about the size of a piece of corn and was a lucky surface find at a local river! usually it's things like Hematite, Calcite, Gypsum, Jasper and some Agates that pack the nice banding, my real interest and what i collect are Quartz and Fluorite! it's frustrating sometimes as apart from combing beaches, river banks and old quarries i don't know 'what to look out for' i'd love to know how you came across this lovely pocket? was it a surface find or something specific such as the area or terrain?
@obliqrecordings Жыл бұрын
@@jimmymcgill2557 These were filmed in Colorado USA. I do a lot of prospecting and where I see pegmatite and/or quartz/feldspar chunks on the surface I do test holes and follow them uphill to their (hopeful) source. Maybe 1 out of every 25 or so holes leads to crystals, so lots of effort but when it pays off it really is great! This particular crystal pocket I hit right away by kicking over a quartz rock mostly buried in the dirt; there were flat sides all over the buried side. One test hole later and a fully euhedral crystal came out, and then I followed them deeper into their source, as you saw.

I took a hiking trip through the Sierra Nevada. At the start of the hike we were surrounded by mountains and we were in a grassy valley type of area. I see a whitish rock sticking out of the ground that for some reason caught my eye, just had an interesting shape. I stopped my group to dig it up and once I fully uncovered it I had a 7 inch long beautiful rock. I thought I found something magical but was informed it was quartz and all over in that area but the piece I found was definitely worth holding onto. I cleaned it up and still have it from that trip. It has flat sides but is far from perfectly flat and eventually realized it was milky quarts but still cool

I’m just now actually getting into the “Rock hound” and mining community, didn’t even know that there was a name for people like us 😂 but anyways my question is, if I find a nice quarts or a nice geo on the ground, do I just start digging in that area or beneath where I found it? How do I go about doing that? I’m trying to learn how to determine where nice pockets are to start digging

@@lindamalcovsky in one place I dig there are large quartz "blowouts" that mostly are just quartz, but throughout there is potential for pockets of crystals. If the quartz is more in veins, follow those. Crystals will form from a pressurized liquid when there is space and the pressure and temperature is just right. Can you quickly explain why a Pegmatite would have a pocket? Isn't a pegmatite solid rock? Or are you hoping that the crystal grew in the pegmatite fell out once Feldspar and Mica weathered away?
@obliqrecordings3 жыл бұрын
The crystals can grow wherever there is room; the host rocks have cracks due to shifting over time where the crystal fluids can travel to. Some pockets I find in place, and others I find because I follow the crystals that have weathered out back up the hill to their source.

where is this, and what are the signs of knowing you're on the right trail?
@obliqrecordings4 жыл бұрын
This is near Pikes Peak Colorado. The crystals in the Pikes Peak Batholith form in pegmatite. You know you're on the trail if you are finding rocks that have larger segments of feldspar and quartz together. When the hot liquid cools the rocks crystalize, if the concentrations of minerals are right, and the temperature and pressure and other factors are all aligned, then the crystals will form in cavities or cracks in the host rock. Then over time the host rock decomposes (sometimes) and leaves the crystals. I keep an eye out for flat sides on quartz or the feldspar and pegmatite on the surface and also when I dig test holes. I have some articles on my blog that go into more detail with pictures too... davealex.com

Do you usually dig straight down from where a large promising rock is found? Are there Crystals like this in Kansas??
@warrenmccarthy54924 жыл бұрын
Look on Mindat.org. Also, I have recently found decent quartz crystals near my house in California. No one told me where they were but at first I just happened to come by them. Then I started finding more a little ways up the road. I now realize that whenever you are finding quartz you could also be on the hunt for crystals. So basically if you get out there you might find some in an area no one knows about. Also, you know Arkansas is good for crystals right?
@emmaburk96174 жыл бұрын
@@warrenmccarthy5492 Okay awesome I will try that! Yeah I knew they had way more than Kansas just haven't had the chance to go down there.

I'm looking on on the Kansas map from Mindat right now and it looks like there were more than a few meteorites there, and also some fossils to find!

Can these crystals be found eny were in the world under ground because I live in Wisconsin and I’m just curious weather or not I can find this here or not?
@obliqrecordings7 ай бұрын
Howdy, Crystals can he found most everywhere in the nation, however their formation is likely limited to very specific places where the ultra rare growth conditions occurred. I recommend checking out rockhounding books from the library or local Internet groups. Good luck finding a cool place near you!
@Cosmic_Ocean_5 ай бұрын
@@obliqrecordings I dont have those things in my country and my city. Our libraries and net isnt that improved. And miners or geologist arent usually sharing these informations about the formations in our cities and country. So i will have to go there and dig up randomly with luck.

@@obliqrecordingsthat's amazing you composed it! hey, I actually was asking because I make sample based hip hop, and was really wanting to sample this track actually, if you still have the raw recording lying around, and we're inclined to let me play around with it, I was wondering if you'd want to upload it to KZbin in high quality or possibly email me an 320kb mp3 or 16bit44.1khz .wav of this track? I can understand if you don't want to go thru the hassle, but I'd love to play around with it and thought I'd ask! I could shoot you my email on here if you were so inclined. Appreciate it! And keep digging, those quartz are amazing!

@MamiMiyagi4 жыл бұрын
Hi! thought id expand on the other users comment.. crystals, specifically quartz, are silicon and oxygen atoms formed by the intense pressure deep inside the earths crust. These crystals take millions of years to form naturally. It has been estimated that they can grow about one atomic layer per year (a two centimeter crystal growing over a period of ten million years). Anyhoo, these crystals are too near the surface to continue growing. and even if they could continue to grow, it would be about 10 million years before they were noticeably larger.

Some crystals will grow back which is awesome--for example in Jet Oklahoma the gypsum grows back every 7 or so years. These kind of quartz crystals, though, form in conditions that we don't want to experience that close to home. There are ethical rules you follow on public lands; on mining claims the purpose is to extract the minerals.
